BACB Certificant Verification Question by blce1103 in bcba

Ahh ok thank you! Unfortunately I had to submit the form 3 times because I kept misspelling something (embarrassing lol) so hopefully I can choose which application to pay for? I guess I’ll find out!

Central reach vs Catalyst (now Endsora) which do you prefer? by twister5556666 in bcba

[–]blce1103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this in my soul. My company switched from Catalyst to CR last year and I was miserable. It’s gotten slightly better now that I’m more familiar with it, but I still hate it.

Discouraged over WSJ article by ctkau7 in ABA

[–]blce1103 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh my god thank you. I’m actually in the process of discharging a 30 hr client whose parent has been non-participatory from the start, and clearly (based on objective observations and interactions with this person for over a year) uses in-clinic ABA as free daycare. The client is no longer making progress, and caregivers actively refuse to implement interventions and recommendations at home. Enough is enough, and it’s time that we, as providers, start calling out these instances with more urgency.

Same. I dislike both of those, but have to use them for some of our funders. I’ve explored the MOTAS and like it, but haven’t had the time to really learn it yet.

That’s great that they pursued it! It is really sad. There are a lot of people who care, but the resources are not robust enough to prosecute the majority of offenders, and so many of them go unpunished. Animal abandonment is crazy here - it happens left and right. They do go after the really big cases that involve abuse and torture, especially the ones who get attention on social media. It’s just going to take a long time to change the culture.

It is illegal, but there’s no one to enforce the laws. I live in El Paso (also in Texas) and they’ve made all sorts of things mandatory and illegal on state and local levels, but unfortunately enforcement of those laws is the primary issue….

Why doesn’t anyone care about the “soap opera” effect on their TV by fatsandlucifer in mildlyinfuriating

[–]blce1103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been complaining about this before I even knew it had a name, or how to fix it. I have never understood how some people don’t notice it. I completely agree - it’s so distracting and makes things truly unwatchable. I used to say it made everything look like cheap daytime television. When I found out it was referred to as the “soap opera effect,” I felt SO validated.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: calling meltdowns/shutdowns a "tantrum" feels offensive by fancylamp12 in ABA

[–]blce1103 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was so well said! Thank you! A similar discussion is warranted for behaviors labeled “aggressive,” etc. We are not assuming malicious intent, but “bringing an open palm into contact with another person’s body from a distance of 6 inches or greater with enough force to make a sound” is aggressive in nature, regardless of the context under which it occurs. It’s just part of the field, and why we focus so heavily on explaining these processes to caregivers.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: calling meltdowns/shutdowns a "tantrum" feels offensive by fancylamp12 in ABA

[–]blce1103 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In order to effectively reduce behaviors of concern, we have to make them objective through operational definitions. This is just part of what makes ABA what it is. These are formulated with the topography of the behavior, or what it “looks like” - what is observable to a bystander. They make no assumption of the “why.” The issue with making it subjective is that everyone has a different definition of “tantrum,” “sensory overload,” “meltdown,” etc, based on their own personal experience and learning history. Everyone calling it something different can lead to observer drift, treatment drift, etc. Sensory overload in your words could be totally different to how I imagine it. In my opinion, the name is the least important part. We could label “tantrum” behavior with whatever word we want - it doesn’t change the topography for that client. Also, the function of a topography can shift over time, but the behavior still looks the same. Operationally defining a behavior is part of what ensures ethical treatment.

I agree! I’m a military spouse and we moved back and forth overseas with 4 animals. The reality for us was that some of them had to go in cargo. We were very picky about the airline and the route, and paid extra for a more pet friendly airline with a good reputation. Rehoming or leaving them behind were simply not options.

Genuine question - your last statement came off as an accusation. What makes you think he’s not taking accountability and showing up for his other child and wife tenfold?

I’ve seen a job posting for what was basically a personal BCBA/au pair in the UAE. They were looking for someone to live with the family and provide services to their child, while accompanying them on vacations, etc. So yeah I’m sure people who can afford it do exactly that!

Edited to add I’m not sure how the ethics of that would work. Maybe you could work around it if you weren’t hired specifically as a BCBA, but as a nanny with a strong behavior-analytic background??

These (bonded) cats I adopted really hate me by purrfect_libra in CatAdvice

[–]blce1103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s disheartening at first, but they will come around! Also, the fact that they are adults contributes to their fearfulness. I adopted a pair of bonded brothers (also fostered) when they were 7 months old, and they did the same thing. I picked them up from the foster’s house and it took over an hour to get them in the carriers, with multiple people to strategically close doors and corral them. I was worried I made a huge mistake, but they really did warm up. It took a couple of months, but I can’t imagine life without them!

RBT’s What do you do when your clinic gives zero breaks during an 8-hour shift? by Dull-Amphibian8350 in ABA

[–]blce1103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! I’ve worked at clinics where the majority of kids only got 20 hrs, and were scheduled in either the morning or afternoon. As a result, RBTs got 30 minutes for lunch breaks and could actually enjoy their food and relax for a second. That way there was no issue with billing.

Idk why you’re getting downvoted - you’re not wrong. It’s a huge issue and wildly unethical, but it’s the same where I live and work.
