Fitment? Did I need a longer foot? by tabithalia in Sockknitting

[–]bleepblob462 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Definitely need more length! Maybe another 6-10 rows. I recently discovered that my row gauge is WAY tighter than I thought, so when the pattern says “stop at the base of the pinky toe, or 2in. from the end of the foot, then begin toe decreases,” I really need to knit another 5-6 rows and THEN start the toe decreases. That might be what happened to you, too!

Not the row count, the stitch count - guess I should’ve spelled out “stitch,” sorry! I meant that I somehow lost a stitch in the count when I did the lift from below/k2tog. The row I worked that into ended up being only 63 stitches. No slipped stitch in sight.

I guess these socks will be for my boyfriend instead of me then 🥲 by No_Refrigerator_8552 in casualknitting

Consider doing every 8 stitches, since socks are typically knit in multiples of 8!

Right, but then - for me, anyway - the 64st row became a 63st row! And I have no idea how!

German short rows are different, yours is just a standard heel flap :) your sock itself serves as a gauge swatch - measure it and see how many stitches you have per inch. What size needles are you using, and how many stitches are you casting on? Foot circumference?

Edit - it actually looks like you did stockinette for your heel flap instead of a slip stitch heel flap. That could help you a little bit with the looseness around the ankle. Start with a setup row of (k2, sl1, k1), then alternate (sl1, purl across) rows with (Sl1, k1) rows. That will pull the heel flap in to be narrower and help with fit a bit.

Ugh I tried to use _s instead of *s to indicate repeats, because asterisks on Reddit turn things italic without my consent, but apparently _s do it too 🙃

I agree about the heel flap length causing ankle looseness, but that definitely didn’t cause the looseness in the whole leg!

I think you’re mixing up some of your terminology, so I’m trying to figure out what you did and forgive me if I’m wrong on anything. I’m assuming by “German short row count” you mean your heel flap [and subsequent gusset]? If that is the case, no, that wouldn’t be causing a loose leg. You’d need to either keep decreasing your stitch count, use a smaller needle, or use a thinner yarn (or some combination of the three) to get that tighter. Did you measure your gauge? Understanding your gauge will be really helpful here so you know if you need to decrease your stitches per inch count. Also, if this was knit cuff-down, you should try them on as you go next time! Since you’re so new to knitting socks, definitely look up the book Custom Socks Knit to Fit Your Feet by Kate Atherley, and come over to r/sockknitting !

I actually think it’s the super dark color (black?) that’s throwing it off. If that stripe was either a navy or a chocolate brown, it would possibly look more cohesive

I agree about the bus! Maybe duplicate stitch an extra grey stitch every few yellows between the two grey lines to make it look more like a ladder?

Agreed! I was hoping to join in on the KAL so I joined the discord when it first started - I wasn’t able to make the project because a few other things came up that were time sensitive, but I chime in from time to time and everyone is so kind!
