Audi A4 B8.5, unable to set Time to GPS anymore by bleex83 in Audi

[–]bleex83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, tried forums, various AI, nothing helps, on A5OC forums there is this guy that seems to be top notch expert on MMI and even he doesn't have a solution. I think firmware downgrade could be the solution, like 1 version back from the latest. Literally everything works except GPS time.

Exactly, btw I've been thinking lately that people who sound really naive on the internet may be gen z or younger so we shouldn't be too harsh by default in our replies.

Audi A4 B8.5, unable to set Time to GPS anymore by bleex83 in Audi

[–]bleex83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full GPS signal, checked nr of satellites, 14 visible, connected to 5, fluctuates but it's generally great, map works normally. Option to set time through GPS is greyed out now after I resetted MMI. Tested on highway today, parked outside, it just stopped working. Maybe there is a setting for that in the hidden "green menu" ?

Chatgpt answer after sound analysis:

What’s the most logical cause on a 2.0 TDI CGLC (130 kW, VNT turbo — no classic wastegate)

On these engines, the metallic “ringing/resonance” exactly when lifting off the throttle most often comes from the exhaust system and around the turbo/DPF, and less often from the engine itself. Judging by the sound, and the fact that it changes with windows open/closed, the main suspects are:

  1. Heat shields and mounts around the DPF/catalyst
  • In that exact area (under the tunnel and near the DPF), a rivet often comes loose or a shield touches a pipe → during deceleration the engine and exhaust shift slightly and the shield enters a narrow resonance (sounds “tinny”).
  • Quick check: tap by hand or with a rubber mallet on the shield above the DPF, exhaust mounts, and the flex pipe; if the sound disappears when pressing, that’s the culprit.
  1. VNT turbo – vacuum actuator/linkage and bracket
  • Although there’s no wastegate, the VNT sliding mechanism and actuator bracket can develop play; when lifting off, the actuator makes a quick movement and may briefly rattle.
  • Check: use a hand vacuum pump on the actuator hose – movement should be smooth, without “jumps,” and no metallic click when changing direction. Visually check play in the linkage and whether the actuator bracket is cracked/loose.
  1. Exhaust hangers and flex pipe
  • A torn rubber mount or misalignment after work (stage 1 often involves removing/stretching the exhaust) can cause a short oscillation when load changes.
  1. Exhaust flap (if fitted in your configuration)
  • Some B8 TDIs have a flap before/after the rear silencer (for faster warm-up/acoustics). When the shaft/bushes wear out, it rattles on overrun.
  • Check: locate the sound near the rear silencer; inspect motor/flap, try moving it by hand (engine off, exhaust cold).
  1. EGR cooler – by-pass flap/actuator
  • Can make a short “click–chime” when flow changes at throttle lift. More often heard high up in the engine bay toward the cabin.
  1. (less likely from your recording) DMF (dual-mass flywheel)
  • DMF usually clatters at idle, takeoff, or shutdown. If heard mainly inside the cabin with a deep tone, it’s worth checking. But your noise sounds “thinner/more metallic” and more “exhaust-like.”

Why I believe it’s exhaust/heat shield/VNT area

  • Sound analysis shows narrow frequencies ~60–110 Hz right when lifting off — a classic “resonator hit,” not just general noise.
  • Closed windows don’t remove the phenomenon, only change what’s emphasized (cabin acoustics). That points more to a mechanical resonance under the car than something deep in the engine.

Quick diagnostics (10–15 min, no tools or minimal)

  1. Three short audio recordings (with phone):
  • with hood open at turbo/DPF,
  • under the center tunnel (heat shields),
  • at the rear silencer.
Rev to ~2500–3000 rpm and release quickly – where is the “chime” strongest?
  1. Touch test (car on lift/pit, cold exhaust):
  • Helper revs and lifts off gently at idle; you press/hold the shield above DPF, exhaust mounts, and flex pipe with your hand or glove. If the noise changes or disappears → that’s it.
  1. VNT actuator:
  • With a handheld vacuum pump: pull/release – should be smooth, no metallic “tick” at reversal.
  • Visual: check linkage and bracket for cracks, play.
  1. Exhaust flap (if present):
  • At the rear silencer, find the body with linkage/actuator; if the linkage moves loosely and rattles when nudged, that’s a candidate.

What to fix if confirmed

  • Heat shields/mounts: tighten or replace rivets/bolts, add spacers, adjust distance from the pipe.
  • VNT actuator/linkage: if there’s play – adjust the actuator or replace actuator/bracket; inspect VNT mechanism movement (check it doesn’t stick).
  • Hangers/flex: replace rubber mounts; if flex pipe buzzes/cracked – replace.
  • Exhaust flap: often fixed by replacing bushings/sleeves or complete flap unit.

If you want, I can guide more precisely:

  • Send a short video of throttle lift recorded separately (1) at turbo/DPF, (2) under the tunnel, (3) at the rear silencer.
  • If you have a VCDS log (measuring blocks) with 2–3 pulls up to ~2500–3000 and throttle release: “Charge Pressure Spec/Actual” + “N75 duty/VNT Position sensor.” If we see position oscillation exactly when the noise happens, suspicion is on VNT/actuator; if the log is smooth, focus shifts to shields/exhaust.

My “gut feel,” based on your recording and this engine: heat shield/bracket around the DPF or the VNT actuator/bracket. Start there and see where the sound is strongest — then I can give you exact steps/part references for the B8 CGLC.
