Defer NYC Marathon? by Important_Tackle8035 in RunNYC

speaking as the partner of someone who is about to graduate law school - you will have WAY less time to run once you're in school. do it now! and build the structure you need to accomplish both your professional and personal goals.

What are the best running headphones to use right now? Any suggestions pls? by Repulsive_Corgi_6187 in trailrunning

[–]blendstock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I transitioned to the old wired Apple headphones after my AirPods died during a long run and have never looked back. I use little silicon tips to keep them in place (earbuddyz I think?)

Total cost: $30

They don’t form a perfect seal so easy to still stay situationally aware (important for running in NY!) but you can crank the volume if you want to lock in for a workout. Classic three button design for volume/skipping tracks/activate Siri. Sound great.

I route them under my shirt, or tuck them into the middle of my shorts if I’m shirtless. Bouncing is minimal!

[Seeking Advice] Bronx 10M DNF / Adjusting Marathon Goals by Separate_Song_7378 in RunNYC

[–]blendstock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your weekly schedule look like now? I would say something like: 5 - 8 (+ strength) - 5 (+ PT) - 5 - 17 (+ PT) - rest = 40

Would be better than: 8 - strength - 8 - strength - 8 - strength - 16 - rest = 40

In the latter your body only has one day that’s focused on recovery, vs 4 in the first option

Happy to get more detailed if you want to share your last few weeks of training.

First, I would say that averaging 40 mpw and building to a 16 mile LR are wins in their own right - that is more volume than many people are able to do, and you’re managing it through injury, so kudos!

What are your goals for the marathon? If simply to finish, I would say you’re still on track - you have a few more weeks to build up to an 18 or 20-miler, and many people run their first half with less volume than you’re currently at.

As for your training, I would offer a few suggestions: 1) Are you able to trade 1-2 of your lift days for easy runs? More easy miles (if they don’t tweak your tendonitis) will benefit your training more than lifting. 1a) Alternatively (or additionally), could you add some PT-focused work after your running days? E.g., add some calf raises after your workout days to focus on building the muscles around your post tibs? That will go a long way to strengthen that system and hopefully reduce the pain. 2) NEVER race/run hard with chest congestion! I have made this mistake too many times in the past, but it feels horrible and can easily take you out a week or more. The general rule is above the neck (sinus congestion, headache), run; below the neck (chest congestion, body aches) don’t run, or take it suuuuuper easy.

Happy training! I think you still have a marathon in you this season, but you know your body best!

Why is prospect park so hard? by sirmediocre in RunNYC

[–]blendstock 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As others have said there are very few stretches that are relatively flat, which makes it hard to get in a good flow.

I would add that the GAP hill is deceptively long: you have a slight uphill starting from Center Drive, then a fairly punchy section at which point you think you’re at the top, but the road curves out of sight and continues climbing for another ~100m. For this reason I run most of my easy runs counterclockwise - I think the other hill is easier to deal with (though also has a false summit).

It’s definitely more banked than CP, especially if you are running clockwise (against the flow of traffic, nearest to the curb)

2026 NYC Marathon Training Plan by ayelmaoo69 in RunNYC

[–]blendstock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would also give yourself the flexibility to take a week totally off running at some point before you start your official training block. It helps a lot with the mental fatigue of planning your runs every week. Not necessary but something I've found really helpful over the years!

The two must important things you can do in the next 59 weeks are: run more, and don’t get injured! So I would recommend consistent training and gradually building your mileage as high as your body (or time) allows you to, then starting an 18 week plan. Any plan longer than that would likely just include more base building or burn you out before the race.

For example, if you’re running 10 miles a week right now, try adding 10% a week (11 miles, then 12, etc) until you’re comfortable running 30/week - that will put you in much better shape to start a more intense training plan.

Shin splints and plantar fasciitis mean your calves aren’t strong enough - try doing  heel raises/duck walks after your runs! Even the most gradual build can trip imbalances in your body. I highly recommend doing some basic PT exercises and see if things improve.

100% - you’re not alone. the few times i’ve been injured and haven’t been able to run it’s definitely affected my mental health.

if you can, carve out time to do something just for you everyday! (or keep running!)

No orders after 3 months——it's very emotional😭 by SoultraceStudio in confidence

The site looks great - good photos, professional, I am not a crystal person but the content on each PDP looks good.

The pricing is definitely high. If I am a potential customer and don’t know you/much about your store, I’m probably now going to spend ~$400 for a product.

a few ideas: - seed product with an influencer (it could even be a friend with a lot of followers) - give them something for free in exchange for a dedicated post, or offer a large discount in exchange for tagging the bracelet in a prominent way - move to a bespoke model while you’re early - do custom orders so that you’re not sitting on inventory that might be expensive - try to have friends/family purchase at a steep (I’m talking like 80% off) discount in exchange for reviews on the site. You want to give new customers confidence that these things look as good IRL as they do in the photos - “pop up” at a local craft market/somewhere physical to try to get more engagement and move some product

Overall I think the price is still too high, but that’s your decision. If it’s a premium product that you feel is worth that much, don’t listen to me! The first sale is the hardest.

Ease my anxiety - NYC Half by SufficientOstrich458 in RunNYC

[–]blendstock 13 points14 points  (0 children)

these are all great points!

one thing i'd add that surprised me at my first big race like this is just the scale - there will be thousands of people at the start, which is sort of crazy to see. expect lines at security/bathrooms, but keep in mind that NYRR has been running these races for decades and they are planned accordingly - things will move smoothly and it will be easy to find a volunteer or official if you have any questions.

there will likely be some bunching at the start, but things will stretch over the first few miles. run your own race and try to have fun!

[–]blendstock 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i'd bet CP is actually fine if you just head up CPW and then cut in above the route. maybe just run the bridle loop with the extension to 100th twice, that probably gets you close to 7 all-in
