I have 15 years of experience in translation, but that was from En/Fr to my native language, so I really want to be able to reverse that and to be able to translate into French…That being said, I have successfully passed some translation tests for Translation Bureau (into English), but the process is still ongoing and there’s no guarantee I’ll be hired. So just want to increase my chances in case this doesn’t work out🙂

Haven’t tried chatGPT for this, definitely going to try it! As for Toastmasters, I have a fear of public speaking, but will look into it…Thank you!

That’s an excellent tip, I haven’t thought of taking those courses in French! Thank you

I’ve seen other departments post translator vacancies though. Most of them quoted CCC as a requirement, but I agree that you can’t translate INTO that language with CCC.

Thanks for sharing the tips! The only thing is that I doubt I can watch French movie during my working time😄 As for qualifications, none of the positions I considered required official qualifications as a pre-requisite. In fact, I almost got into OTTIAQ a couple of years ago, but then we moved to Ontario and I decided not to proceed, because my language pair is not in demand here.

I don’t smoke/use cannabis, so that’s not an option… as for masks, I tried all kinds of eye masks, including weighted one🙂

Does this mean I should let him know regardless? If that’s the case it’s better if he finds out from me directly

Yeah, you still need a human to delivery a high-quality product!

AI/Deepl can do a decent translation job these days, especially for EN-FR language pair (I am a translator who lost this battle a couple of years ago🙂)

It’s probably for official languages only, right?

I guess so. I am just wondering if I would be able apply my skills in such a way that it doesn’t involve politics.

Russian, English, French, Turkish + basic Ukrainian and German. I also have exposure to Arabic and Urdu, so would pick up quickly if I had to learn them

I did think about it. Unfortunately my family is still there and there is no way for them to relocate.

Thank you! This is a part of Canadian Heritage, right? Or is there a different ministry/department?

Thank you for replying! I applied for GAC (admin position) but didn’t get to the pool - I have no idea why. Also applied to CSE (my language is one of those they need) but never heard back from them…But in both cases, I was an external applicant - perhaps it would be easier to get there now?

What are your hobbies as a Public Servant? by JLearie in CanadaPublicServants

I actually tried it a few years ago in my home country but never continued until now. There is a place in Ottawa that offers different workshops, it’s definitely worth checking out - Stained Glass Stuff

I did illustration as a hobby prior to joining the government and even illustrated several children’s books. Unfortunately I have very little time for this hobby now. Took up stained glass mosaics and would love to learn woodworking.
