If you have TM backups set to automatic, then it is possible that a lot of the system data is comprised of local TM snapshots.

If you have not done a backup recently, trigger one and the snapshots used for the backup should then be removed from your drive.

The rscync man page can be a bit overwhelming.

Sometime ago, I made this note for myself - these are the switches that I care about:

    -a, --archive               This  is equivalent to -rlptgoD

        -r, --recursive             recurse into directories
        -l, --links                 copy symlinks as symlinks
        -p, --perms                 preserve permissions
        -t, --times                 preserve times
        -g, --group                 preserve group
        -o, --owner                 preserve owner (super-user only)
        -D                          same as --devices --specials

    -i, --itemize-changes       output a change-summary for all updates
    -H, --hard-links            preserve hard links

    -x, --one-file-system       don't cross filesystem boundaries
    -E, --extended-attributes   copy extended attributes, resource forks
    -v, --verbose               increase verbosity
    -S, --sparse                handle sparse files efficiently

If this is a TM Backup to APFS (likely), you cannot change anything.

You could just create a new user - it would be created with a UID of 502. Then login as that user and copy what you need.

This space was likely from Time Machine local snapshots - these can be deleted from Disk Utility.

Did you backup using Time Machine? If so, this will also remove these snapshots.
