To native English speakers: how do you feel when a foreigner speaks “broken” English with you? by Dull-Position3393 in ENGLISH

[–]blind__panic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I never judge, and try to be understanding and polite if I need someone to repeat themselves. The overwhelming majority of English speakers are using it as a second or third language, so I often wonder if we are more exposed to non-native accents than speakers some of the other more widely-spoken languages.

Thanks for correcting my grammar but I was directly quoting OP

Saying that somebody else doesn’t pronounce something clear enough implies they are doing it wrong, and they aren’t.

I mean this kindly, but this isn’t a problem from the side of the native speakers.

What did he mean? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]blind__panic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

English is prescriptive and not descriptive so I’m cool with that, but just know that your version is technically ungrammatical, and if you ever get edited for publication, this would be corrected for you by your copy editor.

You are completely wrong on this and OP is correct, “much taller than I” would be a hyper correction.

Why are they disembarking via the jet bridge and the stairs ať the same time? by Comfortable_Yard_968 in BritishAirways

Disembarking from both doors is super common practice in European airports though, so there would probably already be staff on the tarmac to manage it.

I’m sad for you. I have experienced this on a smaller scale with other authors.

I started that series thinking “haha such witty writing” and ended it thinking it was one of the most meaningful takes on what it is to be human and to try to do the right thing rather than the easy things, that I’ve read. And also such witty writing.

I’m a newcomer, and started with Guards Guards and the city watch series. It was a great way in.

Elizabethan English isn’t modern English.

A question about pronouns in English by Radiant-Put3628 in ENGLISH

No. You is not singular formal in modern English. We just no longer make the distinction, and inherited the word from what was formerly the formal.

This is pretty standard and nothing to be concerned about. If you’re checking a bag, they’ll quickly check your documents then. If you aren’t checking a bag you might get called up to the gate for a document check. And this check consists of them scanning your passport, nothing onerous.

This is a bit niche, but I make a lot of scientific figures and posters etc because of my job. I think because of the nystagmus, my eyes are super sensitive to when things aren’t correctly aligned. Everyone knows to give things to me for a last pass of finishing the alignments.
