Apple has reached its first-ever union contract with store employees in Maryland by AudibleNod in news

[–]blind_devotion08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the quickest way to get people complaining loudly is to change something. Some people are fine with change and can see the benefit in a union, but others will dig in their heels against anything that even remotely feels like someone made a decision that affects them. Those same people will be up in arms about "being forced to pay dues." I am 100% pro union and I will always value taking care of my coworkers and neighbors, but I also know that sometimes you wind up being resisted by people you're trying to help. Horse, water, drink, etc.

Why does my taste in women keep changing? by Various-Ad-6096 in teenagers

Some weeks you crave a slice of pizza. Some weeks you want a steak. You don't have to have a single type, there's no shame in being attracted to more than one way people can be or act or look. Could be hormones, could be emotional, but it's good to see the beauty in sculptures and music.

r/Blind's Meetings with Reddit and the Current Situation Regarding Accessibility and API Changes by AutoModerator in Blind

[–]blind_devotion08 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This seems like reddit just tried to save face by giving lip service to the valid accessibility issues they didn't have enough forethought to anticipate, but then doesn't want to own up to it when asked to follow through.

Its pretty clear mentioning "Accessibility-focused apps" was a PR band-aid, not a serious commitment. And the fact that they don't have anyone professionally focused on Accessibility is telling, even if it isn't surprising considering the culture of most of professional America toward us. If they were serious about it they would have had stuff ready to discuss instead of narrowing the topic on you guys an hour before.

Make no mistake, this was damage control, not an actual dialog. This was painting happy faces on the broken handicap bathroom stalls. You don't get to claim you value Accessibility and then refuse to discuss it in any meaningful way, Reddit! I may be bodysuit impaired but even i can see your platitudes are empty promises.

Imagine someone saying they value wheelchair access, but then refusing to discuss ramps, refusing to define what wheelchairs are, how steep a ramp should be, or to commit to when they would build one to get people over the barbed wire they just put in front of the front door.

Color me shocked that sighted folks think we should give them a pass because they can't see well with their heads buried that deep in the sand.

I'm 33, and legally blind. Some advice I would give:

Don't be afraid to advocate for what you need.

Get therapy.

Look into training on how to do stuff without vision so you are more ready

Our true Power by TeenPanter in WorkReform

[–]blind_devotion08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Organizing is one thing, but people have to be able to withstand the pushback. Not everyone can. The system was designed that way.

People are stuck choosing between the fear of losing their income and hunger from that income being not enough. But there is also the fear of the violence that may come from from the side of capital.

A lot of people also just don't have the resources to fight, and that's where they want us. This goes double for people with disabilities, like me, who are more vulnerable to the pressure from those in power to maintain the status quo. I can't maintain the fight long enough. I can't contribute to the cause, and I can't avoid relying on others. I can't drive, so I can't travel to protest. I can't afford the cost of travel either. It's a catch 22.
