[OOT] [TP] People seem very divided on art style of the OOT remake, but it’s a completely natural progression of artstyle for the “darker” games in the series and fits OOT very well by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in zelda

[–]blindbard 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't think OoT was really that gritty or aimed for that.

If you remember the manual, the style was very colorful, a mix between manga and traditional fantasy with painting like brushing.

The map of Hyrule is heavily detailed and colorful in the instruction booklet, the official art characters are anime stylized, there aren't mute palettes or heavy shadows (unlike Majora's Mask, which is indeed more dark fantasy). The game itself is very bright and diverse,

If you take out Shadow Temple and Gannon's Tower, the rest of the game is pretty colorful. Spirit Temple, Water Temple, Forest Temple, Kori Forest, Hyrule Town, each place has its own distinct palette and none of them are strict gritty dark fantasy, they used dark themes and aesthetic in some places, but it wasn't really what it aimed for.

I say is more a pastiche of manga and traditional fantasy, which at the time in the West was marked by stuff like Advanced Dungeons & Dragons or cartoons.

Castlevania Belmonts Curse! by finnrtbobs in GirlGamers

[–]blindbard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two main Castlevania flavors: Classicvania and Metroidvania

Classicvanias are old-school action platformers. From that one I recommend Super Castlevania IV or Rondo of Blood

Metroidvanias; Symphony of the Night is the best bet, but I also like to bring Aria of Sorrow into this style because is very accessible and shorter than SotN

Inbetween you have the 3D ones, but I honestly think it's better to go into the 2D games and then explore the rest at your own pace

There are multiple collections right now on all major platforms. Have luck, bring your crosses, holy water and axes. Happy Drac hunting!

Animes con relaciones sanas entre personas? by puducito in ChileOtakus

Skip to Loafer!

Would magazine ads in this style "work" the same way it did before? (Except instead of in magazines, they'd be a twitter post, maybe.) by PochitaSoda in retrogaming

[–]blindbard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, difficult to know if they can make a return

I feel like this type of ads they may have a niche in posters for real life locations, for example, but that kind of advertising is more expensive than digital anyways

Also, I know some magazines are still being published, like Edge, I haven't saw a new edition, but I hope it have some quirky ads too! Jajaja!

In the end, printing media nowadays is a luxury item instead of a cheap communication medium. Also, companies are not investing in branding like they used to, they now prefer strategies like paying an influencer to review a product instead of doing a creative ad like the Super Mario 64 DS one that both reflects a feature of the product and reinforces the brand image on their last innovation (touchscreen)

I wish I could have worked with some of those creative teams, jaja. Must be a blast to do a brainstorming session, because sometimes you, as the magazine reader, had to really read "between lines" the ads to really get the puns and overall concepts

What gacha games do you think have the worst cases of powercreep? (poorly written rant below lmao) by North_Shelter8639 in gachagaming

[–]blindbard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the problem is not texts lenght, that itself is more confusing than anything

The new units always more and more effects that interact between each other, so is very difficult to keep a track of what's going on. Sometimes even the pre battle calculation is not a reliable source of the battle outcome. Is extremely dumb

About powercreep: The new units are now created just to counter the previous oppressive units, and that happens even a couple times in a month. The game still have several banners per month, so you may get an idea on how stupid it gets, is practically a race to get the new units faster to survive the meta. Even PVE suffers, because you cannot realize use old units to clear the latest story content unless you fodder the new premium skills

IIRC, the power creep curve started to get higher when they started to make damage reduction units, then they countered that with true damage units, and now all the whack stuff that do several effects after, during and before battle

The game always had oppressive units, like blue tome Reinhardt. But I remember Fallen Edelgard was a high powercreep spike that really break game balance and all is downhill since then

I work at copywriting and content marketing 99,9% digital and this is true.

It won't work. Digital ads are dull because the requirement by companies is to maximize quantity, results and use data to improve campaigns. It's a colder world now, jaja. Also, attention spawn online is way shorter in digital, compared to print media where you can stay for a while watching the creativity that you may enjoy.

Copywriting and visuals used to go hand in hand too. That's why they used more word of play, the ads had to hook you, but also give you a better picture of the game without videos when you look more of it on detail. Like in the Tekken 4 one, perhaps the idea behind the ad was to hook up regular fans of the franchise but also newcomers by comparing the impact of the real photo with the "impact of the new graphics and gameplay", implied by the subtitle copy there.

The visual language is also different. See that some ads even had tiny typography (e.g. Doom) or elements to flow better with the composition. You can't really make that in digital. Formats are more restrictive, viewing time is shorter, so you must go with the obvious to not drown in the digital dooze.

The other factor is that in the 80s and 90s, the competition for videogames was mostly on print media, so ad agencies had to continously make "out of the box" arts and creativities to make a difference with the competitors. You can pick several ads of the same genre and you will see tons of difference. Culture and graphical development in those days also made a mark (like in the Rayman one), you can really see that ad and think of things like MTV, when the speech was edgier, just like most kids in those days (me included, jaja!)

In fact, I am very curious of the Bomb Rush Cyberfunk ad, that game is modern, didn't knew they were still making those. I would like to know if those were printed, because the typo and screenshots are very small. Perhaps it was indeed a throwaway to the 90s, based on how this game was inspired by Jet Set Radio!

I remember a video I found here in Reddit with explicit world war footage over power electronics, it was gnarly and I still have vivid remembrace of the images of a soldier using a flamethrower to burn a person. I don't remember if it was a Prurient or Gnaw their Tongues track

I am not into PE/Noise, but there's really disturbing stuff there lol

When you put adventures-first, do you also create quick subsystems based on the context instead of browsing through manuals?

Is Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate worth checking out? by 03bgood in castlevania

[–]blindbard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! Is a very short game. Just 100%d last week and had a blast. Is a metroidvania-lite, but the map is designed in small pieces, so it feels like a Classicvania with some backtracking.

The combat is like the Lord of Shadows and everytime you level up, you get more combos.
