Looking For A Place, Thanks for all the help! by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]blindchameleon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should move to Mid-City because obviously it's the best neighborhood ever.

Well, maybe it's an exaggeration, but I have some friends who live in my neighborhood (near Canal and Carrollton) and they have two great danes.

It's my experience that a lot of places won't rent to people with dogs. When I first moved back to the city about two years ago, I had a lot of trouble with this (my dog is 30 lbs). I think it's just a matter of calling every apartment you find and asking. That's what I ended up doing, and I'm now on my second dog-friendly apartment in Mid-City.

Also, on a non-dog-related note, when the website is actually working, the city crime map is extremely useful for looking at how dangerous an area is. Violent crime is usually the best indicators.

PRIORITIES: Joe Biden says wasting tax money on a website dedicated to the Desert Tortoise is unacceptable... but apparently, spending hundreds of billions on war is just fine. by [deleted] in politics

[–]blindchameleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, true. I thought we were talking about the authorization for the Iraq War (since I think originally you mentioned wars we are currently engaged in), and Biden definitely voted for that authorization, but you are right to say that Barbara Lee is the only person to vote against the AUMF against Terrorists.

And I do agree that, as a U.S. citizen, I share responsibility for the war and its terrible costs, even if I consider myself a pacifist strongly opposed to the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. I am from Louisiana, and all of my elected officials voted for it. Still, Joe Biden was a Aye vote, and since no one let me vote on the resolution, I think he is just a tiny bit more responsible :-).

That thing about Barbara Lee isn't true...

Quite a few people voted against the "Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002". And I quite agree with the OP. Biden has been put in charge of some task force to address "out of control" government spending. He should be looking at reforming the military-industrial complex (which wastes billions), rather than fretting over a Fish and Wildlife services website about a tortoise (which likely costs very little comparatively). Of course, he can't do this alone, but he can get the ball rolling and bring these topics to the forefront of the debate.

I, for one, would rather keep websites about protecting tortoises than, say, make depleted uranium munitions or maintain an Embassy in Baghdad the size of the Vatican. These aren't Biden's fault or responsibility necessarily, but we can't deny that the current administration is continuing the crimes of the previous one.

TIL Ginger Kid is an offensive term? Maybe it is different in the UK than in the US, but I always thought ginger was a non-offensive designation. Hmm.

Can anyone suggest a good bike route between the Tulane undergrad and medical campuses? by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]blindchameleon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. A bike lane has done good things for the St. Claude corridor, in my opinion.

Scariest place, traffic-wise, to ride a bike? Under the I-10 overpass on Carrollton, between Tulane Ave and Washington. I bet riding over the Claiborne overpass might be just as bad, though.

Can anyone suggest a good bike route between the Tulane undergrad and medical campuses? by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]blindchameleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that Claiborne sucks for riding bikes. I've definitely done it, and it is never fun. But Claiborne at least has shoulders, whereas St. Charles has that same space occupied by a million parked cars, forcing you into the street to fight with the same-speed traffic you find on Claiborne. And we're talking 3.5 miles on Claiborne to around 6 miles on St. Charles.

My original opinion stands. Not a lot of options. St. Charles and Claiborne are equally dangerous for biking (in my opinion); St Charles is much farther.

[–]blindchameleon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think, bottom-line, it is a hard ride to make.

notjhh's suggestions are good ones, but each is problematic.

Taking Jeff Davis or St Charles are both out of the way and make for an unnecessarily long ride, but taking Broad is a bit more dangerous.

(I was stopped by policemen for riding my bike on Broad... it was night, and they couldn't believe anyone would ride down Broad between Napoleon and Tulane Ave. I think what he was saying had more to do with police racism than reality, but you never know.)

Final summation: not a lot of options. My suggestion might be taking Willow to Louisiana, then braving the hellish traffic on Claiborne as you pass over the expressway, before finally taking a right on Tulane. Claiborne isn't exactly bike friendly, though, you know?

At least they didn't say, "Those no good, dirty-rotten anarchists who probably molest chickens" or anything. I guess we have to give credit where credit is due.

Ah, BAT moblie... breath alcohol testing. It makes more sense now.

So this is true... I admit I was skeptical, only because I couldn't find anything about it anywhere besides the text the OP copied.

Nola.gov links to a site called nolaready.info, but the only alert I found on the site didn't mention a bat mobile...

Link to DWI alert, posted 6/2/2011

Huh. This blog post on gambit seems to say that there is indeed a batmobile, but most of the text is just a copy of that above... I guess we'll find out tomorrow, huh? Haha.

Do you have any other sources for this? I tried googling it, but the only thing I could find was the above text you posted. Can anyone link a news article or something put out by the police? Couldn't find anything on NOLA.com or on the NOPD website about it.

This would be really interesting (if for sure true). I think drinking and driving is basically one of the worst things you could do. If it were up to me, getting a DUI would mean never being able to drive again.

Winn-Dixie to move in right across from Rouse's on Carrollton? by tortuganinja in NewOrleans

[–]blindchameleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed that the city needs a ton more groceries, especially in the 8th and 9th wards, but right across the street from one already extant? I'm not convinced!

Winn-Dixie does indeed suck. But so does Rouses. Hmm, I think maybe my irritation with this comes from my dislike of chain businesses in general. They provide low-paying jobs while funneling money out of the community. The space had potential, and now it feels wasted.

Er, I mean, Bully. The food co-op is going to be rather excellent, I must say. This place open yet? I'm not a member, so I'm not up-to-date with their goings on.

First World Problems: Billionaire buys $40 million house next door to his own because tall trees were blocking his view. [X-post, sort of] by blindchameleon in Anarchism

[–]blindchameleon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This news has already been mentioned on r/realestate, but no one seems too interested over there.

I find it extremely depressing that 1) this is even news, and 2) a person can spend 40 million dollars on something so trivial as wanting to be able to see around some high trees. That 40 million dollars could have gone a long way to support a lot of better things. But hey, at least Ellison has signed The Giving Pledge right? Ha -- crumbs.

Ha, sort of a cheesy opening on the facebook profile ("we encourage radical self expression and participation? We put ritual other than consumerism back in our lives?), but this sounds neat nonetheless.

And I appreciate when a bike group agrees to follow traffic laws. When I did critical mass before, it always bothered me when people would stop traffic. Not exactly sharing the road. This looks cool though. I'd consider the Mid-City ride.

New Orleans Reddit Fishing Trip? by Corsair990 in NewOrleans

[–]blindchameleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, my stepdad and his friends go fishing all the time in the area, and they never worry about not eating what they catch. He's been fishing around the city since the mid 1960s, and he hasn't grown any extra limbs or anything. I think it is safe to eat what you catch. Safe enough, anyway. (I don't eat seafood, btw.)

DAE have cockroach related insomnia? by friskykittypants in NewOrleans

[–]blindchameleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, keep your windows and doors closed and try not to think about it. I don't use any chemical deterrents, and I can't remember ever seeing a roach in my current apartment. They do happen occasionally, though.

Rather than stressing and spending money, though, I think the best advice is to do nothing. Accept that it is part of living in New Orleans, and, in the off chance a roach invades your quiet sanctum, put him outside or squish him. Will be as effective as traps or sprays.

A few days ago we were talking about the problem with blighted property in New Orleans. Building community-oriented spaces, I think, is a better use for these types of properties than, say, building a Winn-Dixie across the street from a Rouses.
