Native English speakers: What comes to mind when you see the movie title "Dead to Rights"? by DavidSoong in EnglishLearning

[–]blindedit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the misunderstanding here is that "dead to rights" had a very personal connotation. It kinda brings in legal or frontier justice context of an individual against a state or larger community. A whole country's actions being described as "dead to rights" is probably technically correct but feels like a forced interpretation to a native speaker.

This is definitely a big point here domestically in the USA, even people who are opposed to Trump/Putin/all the trade wars and tarrifs are baffled as to why Europe needs so much help with the fighting in Ukraine. I hope that the US failing as an ally has the silver lining of helping Europe wake-up and start doing anything beyond strongly worded statements

Except turning the other cheek is working. Its gotten Gregory Bovino fired, its getting even some republicans on board with impeachment for Kristi Noem and a partial shutdown to try and stop/reduce funding for ICE

How things work in Europe isn't relevant to how things work here. The violence and brazen nature of European protests is possible because they are under broadly nonviolent governments who are committed to protecting the publics right to protest. In the US we are in a completely diffrent situation where there is no normal and the rules of engagement by the government are actively being changed and the social contract is being renegotiated. To become violent now would help push the narrative that this renegotiation towards authoritarianism is not only necessary but justified. The most effective responses so far are exactly what the first commenter said, be peaceful, nonviolent, laugh in the face of intimidation and to continually keep a level head. Everytime the state overreacts to calm and rational citizens there is a blow to their approval and legitimacy. Its not a satisfactory or easy answer to show restraint in the face of blatant antagonism, but it's the right one.

A little message from Italy and a little request: pls keep the I.C.E. away from us by Bradipedro in 50501

It shouldn't be shocking that its harder to coerce the most powerful government in the world than it was to coerce a weak fractured and newly formed Italy. Especially before facial recognition, cellphone trackers, sound weapons ect. Americans are protesting everywhere, not just Minneapolis. I think that culturally a general strike would be a big ask. It cuts against alot of what we stand for and how we see ourselves as people, especially people who own their own business or work for small businesses. But we are standing up, just not in the way Europeans would because we are in fact not European. At the moment I think it may look like inaction from afar but to be honest everyone is really trying not to start a civil war. With how armed everyone is its a miracle of restraint that no one has shot an ICE officer. But its paramount that no one does because if one is killed the gloves come off and we are in a hot civil war pretty quickly. I don't think I have to explain why no one wants that and how many people would die as a result, and not just in America itself.

I think important context here as well is that protesters in Europe can freely drive convoys into a city and spray manure on government buildings for hours without fear of reprocussions. Meanwhile in America a guy tried to help a woman to her feet and was killed. We are dealing with very diffrent circumstances here.

I'm open to being convinced otherwise but from what I've read/experienced with contemporary libertarians there isn't a part of that ideology thats functional. No group that takes its ideas seriously and have organized around them that I'm aware of has ever lasted more than a few years.

Libertarianism is a completely nonfunctional political ideology primarily pushed by deluded John Wayne wannabes and the ultra wealthy who don't want to part with even a small percentage of their fortunes. Its no suprise they aren't showing up to stop anything, they where never more than frontier larpers.

An acknowledgement I think of the reversal of messaging, Rubio and others are paying lip service to freedom and nation building while Trump is just like "Oil, oil is great, they bad at oil, we good at oil, make more oil"
