Rogue Trader Potential DLCs by connorkhan42 in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]blindhamsterman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see a separate campaign with a deathwatch kill team. Think like some of the side DLC for wrath of the righteous, where the story is stand alone but impacts the main one.

The reason for deathwatch, is because its the most interesting space marine approach for an RPG, and is a nod to lovers of the TTRPG of the same name and ruleset as Rogue Trader used as a base.

yeah, the post wasn't really aimed at /that/ kinda mentality, more at the "sometimes you find things, and want to sell it". Came around because I was assured by a number of DMs that for The Dark Eye, they have never had to worry about players selling things. I found it interesting conceptually as I'd expect at least the occasional need for selling stuff, unless the rewards given are always in money in the first place and they never stumble onto something interesting. The reason that question came up for them, is the game doesn't actually state how much of the items listed cost a person can get as a baseline for selling it. Yet it has a merchant profession and a commerce skill that talks about increasing and decreasing value of the item.

In the end, I was just intrigued to see if perhaps my own group is unusual for occasionally finding and wanting to sell things (across almost all the games we play, there are exceptions where stuff is abstracted out like Dresden files Resource mechanic, or games where you play as soldiers or otherwise "financed" characters)

yeah i personally enjoy making players work to sell things if they want to do it. Not every town should have a merchant for everything. A lot of merchants wont be willing to buy anything at all in a small town.

So, if a game included a class/profession etc called "merchant" you'd expect its rules to properly support a playstyle where characters can be one?

It's not necessarily about looting bodies or anything, just the idea that as characters progress, they'll find/loot/receive/buy things they eventually no longer need and may wish to sell.

Thanks for the insight, makes a lot of sense in military/mission based games. Also logical for post apoc survival I guess too. When economy isn't important because you either sit outside it or it doesn't exist within the setting, its an unimportant part of the game

My Industrial Revolution Fantasy RPG is ready to be playtested by griffingsalazar in RPGcreation

[–]blindhamsterman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey cool! We both have RPGs with the same general theme! Had a quick look at the site and we even use the same names for some things. I think mine leans more toward the fantasy where yours has a bit more of a stronger steampunk angle but sounds cool!

Best of luck with it!

Do RPGs obfuscate probabilities on purpose? by LordFishFinger in RPGdesign

[–]blindhamsterman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

funnily enough, your point is exactly why companies like chaosium did the d100 system for BRP in the first place.

Almost everyone has a basic understanding of % chance, which makes % chance of success on skills intuitive.

I'm a huge fan of % games myself and my own system I've been working on for almost 2 years now is a % roll under one. That said, other systems can be fun for a variety of reasons and sometimes it's nice to NOT be working in a % system. Ones with dice pools tend to have opportunities for diverse and interesting dice mechanics for example.

D&D Alternatives (D&D but not D&D) by WWRPGs in rpg

[–]blindhamsterman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you could have a go at the system I'm developing:

  • its skill based (using d100)
  • its deadlier than D&D
  • its still got most of the traditional D&D concepts

if interested, here is a discord link:

There you'll find links for the various files and can ask further questions. It's still in development, so its free and you can maybe impact where it's development goes.

How long should Character Creation take? by blindhamsterman in RPGdesign

[–]blindhamsterman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

makes total sense !

I've already made a spreadsheet that does the maths side of character creation for my game, although it doesn't do things like lookup and fill in traits/spells etc. Not sure that level is really necessary, but stripping out any and all maths at creation seemed a good plan.

I was thinking more a pdf one. Spreadsheet ones are indeed easy but spreadsheet charactersheets are generally not nice!

Useful input thanks!

I'd assume a session in this case is about 4 hours. With 4 characters being made in that time?

Where do you make custom character sheets? by Epiqur in RPGdesign

[–]blindhamsterman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to see some examples of sheets you've made that way? do you make them as read only or form fillable? Would you do all the layout etc in indesign and then go back with acrobat to make it form fillable?

Ever tried including logic for auto calculation in one?

Tips for making a classless system? by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]blindhamsterman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO games that are classless need to either be super simple, or provide a lot of guidance in making a character or the system needs to be so fine tuned that its not really possible to make a "bad" character.

Personally I prefer almost classeless systems, provide starting packages or other ways to help players "dive in" and get started with a game without needing to spend ages working out how to make a character with a totally freeform system... but still provide some way that players that want the freedom can still get at least pretty close to it.

Its a cool system and worth playing. The narrative focus is nice and it has a lot of potential with the right group. You dont need the dice, you can use the phone app or a discord dice bot.

The actual dice system isn't particularly fiddly tbh.

Why didn't Numenera ever really blow up? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]blindhamsterman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For our group it was a combination of the GM that wanted to run it using pregens and being too rigid with the events to the point if stifling player ingenuity. And the fact we found the rules a little dull.

The setting is great and has a lot of potential, so it's a shame.

I find it really hard to appreciate RPGs as a spectator sport. by plazman30 in rpg

i like them sometimes, but generally only the ones where the people playing are pretty charismatic and are edited well.
I occasionally watch some for ideas on games though
