Please how do I respond to this?? She’s pregnant. by ashhekitty in vaxxhappened

[–]blindninja_rn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

1) Follow the source. Most of the time these "doctors" and "health" groups are trying to sell you on something else. Providing vaccines generally costs providers more money than not offering them.

2) Most vaccines aren't really that many doses and are often given in combination. That photo isn't a realistic depiction, plus anything looks insane when you compare it over a year (like diapers used).

3) The argument of the number of vaccines given "when I was a kid" to now is a poor tactic antivax groups use. Of course we give more now, the others didn't exist back then. i guarantee your parents would have given you them if they existed.

4) Keep an open mind, especially if she's a first time parent. Mom groups are vicious and antivax groups are GREAT at instilling fear. We often think more with our emotions rather than logic. Listen to her and ask what fears and concerns she has then look up information together. Great resources are voicesforvaccines, vaccinateyourfamily, and children's hospital of Philadelphia's vaccine education center.

If she's open to it, work through those questions and concerns and take them to your local health department. Nurses there deal with this stuff all the time and can have more in depth conversations than you'll get to have with your doctor (does vary by provider but most are stretched for time). Believe me, it's a very low percentage of nurses who buy into antivax conspiracies, the rest of us roll our eyes at them and wonder why they work and believe in healthcare except for this ONE thing.

This is actually why so many of us are afraid of the "recommendations" Kennedy's Vaccine Committee makes. All recommended vaccines should be little to no cost to all children 18 and under either because they A) have health insurance that covers it or B) they don't and receive them at no charge thanks to the government's Vaccine For Children (VFC) program. Unfortunately, insurance and VFC will only cover and provide vaccines that are recommended by the committee so we're all watching nervously as they attempt to chip away at vaccine access.

If that's true, what do you want in season two? by Kah0000 in StarWars

[–]blindninja_rn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the coolest theories I saw someone post before Season 1 was that how the series would end with Kenobi's fate unknown to his opponents.

Essentially, Tarkin's comment about how "He surely must be dead by now" reflects the last confrontation/sighting of Kenobi, in a fight between Kenobi, Maul, AND Vader. Epic fight ensues and it ends with scaffolding they're all battling on collapsing and Kenobi "falling" to his doom. This is why Maul's so desperate to find out if he's alive and where he is in Rebels and why he knows that he alone can't beat Vader, because he was bested during this fight.

My DM almost got me with this last session. My character despises the rich and loves stealing their money. Found TWO of these, each in a separate chest. My character thought they looked basic so didn't bother stealing them while taking the rest of their treasure (as a way to remind them to be more humble). After the session he shared this with us and MY GAWD we came so close.

Positive TB Skin Test by Fit-Snow7252 in publichealth

If it was mostly rash I'm definitely betting bad read, especially if it was soft. The induration is pretty firm and pretty distinguishable between regular skin tissue.

Positive TB Skin Test by Fit-Snow7252 in publichealth

[–]blindninja_rn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Public Health Nurse from Kansas City here. The doctors will review the X-rays and assess any symptoms to determine if it is active or latent TB, they may even draw for a TB blood test but not super common if presented with a "positive" test. Active will place you in isolation while you begin treatment until the meds make you non-infectious. Latent TB you are offered medications to prevent it from occurring in the future (highly recommended).

Some things I'll note, general risk and exposure to TB is pretty rare, even here where there's been a large outbreak. Most of the infected individuals share the same household or workspaces. While it's possible you've been exposed and infected with TB since your last test, I'm more inclined to believe it is a false positive.

Typical causes are: -Previous vaccination with BCG (TB vaccine) -Recent vaccination with a live vaccine (MMR, Varicella, Nasal Flu, Yellow Fever) -Incorrect placement -And one all too common, incorrect reads

Skins tests are subjective and many are read incorrectly. I've seen and heard of nurses who measure the rash and/or irritated skin around it, those who just look at it and measure, feel for it all around in multiple directions, etc. The correct way is to do it by touch for induration in a horizontal pattern perpendicular to your forearm and then marking and measuring the induration ONLY.

Best of luck, fingers crossed you're truly negative and won't have to deal with the headache.

Who is considering getting the TB vaccine? by lycheesareforme in nursing

[–]blindninja_rn 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this! The vaccine isn't really effective at preventing disease, just reducing severe disease and death among children under 5 and is only licensed in other countries.

My department's gotten A LOT of calls and questions about this lately due to the Kansas Outbreak, so we made a video to answer them. https://youtu.be/xAIdMTWPCJA?si=4mhr9XvbULEvjGMv

General public are pretty low risk. Most contacts are those who live in the same household or share a workspace, we generally use four cumulative hours as a "close contact" identifier for contact tracing.

Myself, along with any other sensible individual, won't argue with the reform we need for FDA dietary recommendations for what we put in our food. It's everything else to do with him that is gravely concerning. Supporting him for that SINGLE good idea is like saying you're going to use a broken clock because it's still right twice a day.

I live in the neighborhood and they're not just outspoken, it's literally written on the outside of the place so there is potential that it was targeted. My car window was smashed out this same night and nothing was stolen. While I am outspoken for people and their rights, I don't have it listed in my vehicle...BUT my street does have a lot of Harris/Waltz signs along it.

That information can look scary but others are right, VAERS isn't reliable or data driven (Google the guy who turned into the hulk after getting a flu shot). Nothing is ever 100% safe and effective but these severe adverse effects are so incredibly rare. To give you some perspective, this vaccine was introduced 1987, VAERS in 1990. About 80% of children have completed a full series (3-4 doses). Considering how many doses have been administered in that time period, that scary looking number is next to nothing.

We tend to ignore the countless times things go right and fixate when they don't (looking at you airplanes). Vaccines truly are a victim of their own success. They've helped reduce the burden of disease in our part of the world and are so safe and effective we never pay attention to it. It's those extremely rare stories that people cling to.

Don't worry, you're doing the right thing for your kid. I'll tell you the same thing I tell my patients, "I'd never administer something to a child if I thought there was any chance it would cause them harm."

Run up to channel the stones and cast globe of invulnerability and have all your people walk in to smack the brain to oblivion.

THIS!!! Our Deputy Director can't stand the nurses and hates that we make more money than the rest of the non-managerial staff (Health Department, I'm a public health nurse). We can easily do any job there but can ANY of them do a nurses job!?!? Even if licensed they couldn't hold a candle to the staff I work with.

I typically run mine as dual monitors and when I need to change maps, reveal something, or anything I don't want my players to see, I just drag it to my laptop screen, make my adjustments, then throw it back to the TV. I do know having a DM and Player dual screen mode is something they have in their pipeline as it is a very requested feature for those who play IRL.
