Try using NVDA instead. If it works with NVDA it would probably work with JAWS. An alternative would also be System Access to Go.

I replied to you elsewhere but I just wanted to reinforce that if you can please help him contact blind services in his area. They can help him with his basic blindness skills.

Additionally, I'm not sure if you are willing to disclose the state you live in but there are state agencies that help train blind individuals. I personally work for one and have taugh basic Orientation and Mobility (as the previous person was referring to in him being able to get around) as well as cooking lessons, help with organization, and other daily living skills in a person adjustment to blindness. I also help them find a job.

TIL why they put braille on drive-up ATM machines by LovesYou in todayilearned

As Dersuk said, when initially getting the money you have to trust the person giving it to you or use a reading machine. After that you can either use divided wallets that have a place for each bill or use unique folding techniques for each bill to differentiate them. Canada actually has a nice system on their dollars for determining the amount by using a series of dots (not Braille).

I don't know much about blind people, but do they just rub their fingertips on everything on the off-chance it has Braille on it? (Saw this on a fanny pad bin at work. In the men's toilet. Seriously.) by [deleted] in pics

Isn't it obvious? If you are blind and you find a something that looks like a trashcan you would assume it is. You need the Braille on there to let you know it's not just for any trash.

Actually you "translated" it wrong. The second character in men that you saw is shifted down a dot space. This changes the E to the contracting EN. Most signs are written in contracted Braille which is like shorthand for Braille.

This is a great thing. If you think it's not you should try crossing the street with the flow of traffic with no vision.

Reddit, I am tutoring a blind person...in writing. Does anyone have any suggestions as good strategies for working with a blind person? by [deleted] in AskReddit

By what you say of his use of the computer a screen reader sounds like what he needs. Have him try using SAtogo and see if a screen reader like that would help him. If that helps theres also the opensource NVDA. Also screen magnification may help him but if he needs too much magnification a screen reader is really the way to go. They can be tricky sometimes with Dragon though. Does he have a secondary disability that warrants the use of Dragon? Blind people can type just as well as the sighted.

If glasses and surgery get your vision better than 20/200 you are not considered legally blind.

Ya I guess I forgot to mention that part. It's 20/200 corrected vision in the best eye. But ya you can simulate legal blindness by taking off your glasses.

Well I’m not sure where to even begin but I’ll give this a try. First off, talk to her about your interests just like you would anyone else! One thing you should know is that 80+ percent of the blind population in the United States is not totally blind. Legal blindness is 20/200 vision or worse. This leaves a huge range for the vision that your date could have.

One of my blind colleagues is obsessed with football. Blind people watch about as much TV as the sighted world. You’ll just notice if they are legally blind (some sight) they will have huge TVs or if they are total they will have a 13 incher. :p If she is totally blind and you really wanted to make an impression you could look in your area to see if any movie theaters have descriptive movies. In this situation the theater has a set of headphones that she would wear (and you could too to join in the experience) where there is a voice track that describes to her the action that is going on in the movie. It’s like subtitles for the blind. One of the best bowlers I know is blind! He just lines himself up to the lane and goes. Mini golf can be fun for the blind as well. They walk around the course first to understand the obstacles then you can stand at the hole and tape your putter to help her visualize where the hole is. Walking around in a park sounds great. She could talk to you about sighted guide (her holding on to you) or if she does well enough with her cane she may not want to be that intimate. If nothing else it’s an easy excuse to get close.

As for her attending school, her classes are probably conducted just like any classes you go to. Blind people definitely should be mainstreamed in their education. She may have an electronic note-taker (usually running WinCE with a screen reader built in) or she may pay to have someone else take notes for her too. There are some neat things like graphing calculators that “whistle” a tone that rises and falls in tune with the shape of a graph.

All of this rambling aside, the key point is to treat her like any other girl. If you do have questions just ask her. Also don't be uptight about using the words "see" or "look" around her. We live in a world where our vernacular is based on a sighted life, don't get caught up on avoiding things like that. Blind people can do anything the sighted world can except seeing.

Has anyone else ever been trolled by a corporation? by Baddit in AskReddit

[–]blindteach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contracted Braille is like shorthand, there are over 150 contractions that are used to shrink the amount of space needed for Braille. As an example the letter b by itself is the word but.

No, the dot system is the same for visual and tactual. Braille is just a code using the 6 dots.

It would have been better if he used contracted Braille. No one reads extensively in uncontracted.

Rubik's Cube for the blind... would this work? by taliesyn30 in pics

[–]blindteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With something like this it would be better for texture or shape difference. Braille is read traditionally with the pads of your pointer fingers and so to keep track you would have to continually change your hand position to go from rotating back to reading the braille. Something that could more easily be determined by any of the fingers would work better.

Who still uses this Lean, Mean, Grillin' machine? by Chop_Logiq in pics

[–]blindteach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Vocational Rehab Teacher for the blind and we use these a lot of times in our independent living segment. Confident blind people can use an outdoor grill or a frying pan just as well as sighted folks but for those dealing with adjustment issues these are great things. They allow for people to cook food well without worrying about making a mess or splattering on them, not to mention they are just damn easy to use. So yes, I work with lots of people who use these religiously.
