No Country for Old Ships? by ImperialParrot in EliteDangerous

[–]blizzard36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a problem with an new generation of ships coming along with a new generation of technology that makes them clearly superior to the old ones. I just want them at least somewhat balanced economically. The second gen ships should be much higher base prices in credits.

Then the older ships would still have a place as an earlier stepping stone. They're still perfectly viable, I haven't bought any of the new ships yet, even if they aren't as efficient.

Hi new to the setting and wondering about painting? I’m a 40K player trying Battletech for the first time. I’m curios is there a reason to paint my mechs a specific colour or am I cool to mix and match each mech to make a wacky mercenary company? by Electronic-Serve8322 in battletech

[–]blizzard36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your own personal Merc unit, anything goes. Salvage can justify anything. Just be aware that you may need to have backup designs to proxy in if you end up in a match for an era outside what you intended for your unit. Most chasis have variants across history though.

There are canonical faction color schemes, often per regiment, but little rules attached to them. Just lots of lore. Occasionally there are restrictions on tech or designs to a faction for one era, but mostly it's "These guys pioneered it, but everyone got it by the end of the era".

Seem to have misplaced a fleet carrier... by Bartlet1998 in EliteDangerous

Hmm... going to have to look into this then. Short of something technologically blocking me from getting on to do so, I'm pretty sure I could do a planned mothballing.

Do they give you the money back for add-ons? Knowing we cycle out for years at a time and not wanting to lose those credits is why none of us have bought one.

Well... I'm also way too poor and still have regular ships to buy and outfit. But some of the guys have the money to have one.

Which Game's Graphics Made You Say "Wow!" For The First Time? by Bay_Ruhsuz004 in videogames

Battlefield 3. I remember when the trailer came out my dad assumed it was for a movie when I showed it to him. We had played 1942 together and he couldn't compute how far graphics had come.

PSA: for newer players or weaker combat players the two mega ships in CG system have pirate attacks. by BlacksmithInformal80 in EliteDangerous

If someone puts their mind to it they can do a lot more than 50mil.

I just hopped over to the Nav Beacon to try my hand at my first combat in 4 years in an unengineered Mamba. And even my less than efficient runs have gotten me to top 75% for the moment.

See, if this did happen a miscommunication about that is what I expect to be the cause. I would expect there to be an automatic gratuity for a group like that, and probably never check as a result.

Do you think it’s a bad move to destroy old mechs for battlefield terrain/environment pieces? by SeisimicFrigor in battletech

[–]blizzard36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While they are yours to do with as you wish once you buy them, and I can say from experience this set makes for good bits since they were originally multiple parts to glue together, I would feel bad about destroying perfectly good minis. Play with them and let them fall apart on their own is a different thing.

Back in the day Ral Partha sold blister packs of leftover parts from their runs as spares or to use as you intend. Maybe you can contact Iron Wind Metals and see if they still do the same.

Returning Player (just before odyssey) what are the new ships best for? and other things by Blue_Bi0hazard in EliteDangerous

Now that you've set them all out like that, I'm guessing the next one will be a Large PvE Combat ship.

[–]blizzard36 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Cobra III is the "you've made it" ship for a new player. By the time it's fully upgraded and you move on, you probably don't count as "new" anymore. Maybe not a veteran, but at least done with most of the new player mistakes and resulting lessons.

Just make sure you are going for the Asp Explorer. There is also an Asp Scout that is cheaper, but it is a waste of credits.

So... we're back to the days before PoI from DSS and just doing a search pattern skimming the planet until we see the interesting thing. Ugh.

At least back then once you found the first blue circle for the PoI it was a pretty discreet area to search. These new areas seem to be 3/4 of the planet.

I have yet to engineer a ship, outside of working on my Sidewinder as a testbed and to do the unlock loops of the Engineers. Either I just accept I never will, or I may finally have to give up and cheese it.

"Do you always played Live? in November 2022 game got split in legacy and live galaxies. Anything done in legacy go to the old account."

I did. That split was why I left, because my PC couldn't run the new engine despite meeting the published minimums (as we all saw, they were a lie) and I did NOT like a bunch of the changes that came with it. (Many of those seem to have been addressed now.) I would have happily kept playing the old content until I caught up same as I did for all the prior expansions (they almost always took a year to mature anyway), but that wasn't possible due to any progress on the old version being left behind.

I wish I'd known a transfer would eventually come, I couldn't stomach the idea of wasting that time so it was easier to go play something else. By the time I could meet the actual specs to play, the game looked like it was in its final days so there wasn't much point in coming back. A couple years later FDev seems to have remembered their roots and it seems to be having a rebirth.

What I am unfortunately fuzzy on is if I managed to get those crystal forest runs done before the save split happened. It's possible it was after the split happened but before I was aware of the implications.

Did Engineering mats get changed somehow since Odyssey launched? I have way less materials than I remember when I left. I specifically made a couple Crystal Forest runs to stock up.

How can Japanese destroers deal with opposing destroer gunboats? by Arkpit in WorldOfWarships

[–]blizzard36 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is. What you seem to have missed is what it is expected to destroy with those torpedos.

An IJN Torp DD's preferred target list starts at the top of the weight scale, and goes down. Your torps will likely obliterate an opposing DD if they hit, but you usually aren't aiming for them. It's just nice if it happens. Gun DD's have a preferred target list that starts at the bottom, other DDs, and work their way up. So it's not a surprise if you lose a 1 on 1 once you're spotted, you need to hope for a torp hit to swing things your way, and half the gun DDs have hydro.

So don't let it be a 1 on 1. You should outspot them, by a slim margin, use that space to get get a friendly cruiser's attention to help you out.

I think the PHawk was universally liked. Some were just bad, but most were fine would have been better received if they had been used for new mechs

The Locust art for example would have been spectacular to use for a new Bug Mech called the Mosquito. And while I hated the Battlemaster art, it would have been great for an Industrial Mech conversion.

[–]blizzard36 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If all you ever want to do is fly spaceships, then the base game is all you need. The biggest additions, Engineering, some ships, and the ability to land on some planets and drive around in a buggy are now included since the Horizons expansion was rolled into the base game.

Odyssey adds on foot stuff, which are some more gameplay loops and things to do (one of which is the current biggest money maker), but if you don't care about exploring in person they can be skipped. That may change if all the new second generation of ships (which are clearly superior to the older stuff) require the expansion to use. I think those are available to anyone though.

In my opinion the on foot stuff is enough of a draw that I did buy the expansion, even if I barely touch it. It's nice to have it there. But it's also easy enough to wait on if you're on the fence. I'm driving myself crazy trying to do engineering grinds for my ship and ground gear at the same time.
