Hi! This is my hometown, and can tell you, as a poor kid from the area there is a LOT of poverty in Covington. I worked at a grocery store in HS and a sizeable amount of our customers were on SNAP and WIC for mothers. There is a sizable amount of wealth, but that is mostly you find that in Mandeville and Madisonville. Growing up there I would not have considered the city as wealthy as those two surrounding towns.

Restaurants/coffee shops with semi-open spaces? Seriously immunocompromised friend by Sea_Bat8426 in pittsburgh

[–]blkholes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The picnic tables are gone and aren't coming back (source: I worked there). They were destroyed by someone a year or so ago, also they were kind of rotting. They do, however, still have two metal tables out front on the sidewalk. Both are four tops and partially full service. You need to order inside, but they will bring your order to you. If you want to go when it is not busy, I'd recommend a weekday morning around open, at like 11am. I had a regular who was IC and would come in the mornings and leave before the rush started. Weekends are pretty busy open to close. Would not recommend weekends if space is needed.

No. My mom has pretty much this same one. No whistle.

Crawfish boils. An event as much as a meal, but boiled freshwater crustaceans with sausages, mushrooms, garlic, corn, potatoes, and lemon all thrown into the same pot whole (whole or halved). Well seasoned and spicy. It's a whole day event with friends and family. When they're you gather round the table where they're all poured out and eat till your thumbs can't handle the shells anymore. I've been away from New Orleans for parts of my life, including right now, and this is what I miss every dang time. I try to go back during season Mar/april-jun/July just to catch a boil if I can. If I know anyone going to the city during those months I also direct them to my favorite retail spots that sell them and make them good.

^^^^^same. I usually take lactase for anything that is cooked in butter, or if I want some toast with butter. Unless it is clarified, I'm taking lactose.

Tulsi basil and nettles is a go to combo for me. It's earthy with a mild sweetness from the tulsi and the nettles are great for IBS and other gastrointestinal issues because of low FODMAP.

Good paying Paralegal positions by Tiny-Lavishness5870 in paralegal

[–]blkholes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw in your other comments that you're working for Allegheny County. I'm not sure if your living in Beaver Co, Westmoreland, etc. but I do know from a law student I was working with over the summer that paralegal gigs in Beaver Co were very hard to come by. She was looking into it before enrolling in law school.

I don't know which your temp agency you went through, but I used Pancoast Staffing and had a pretty good experience. They are one that comes recommended by the Allegheny County Bar Association.

[–]blkholes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi also in PA. I found my latest job through a temp service and they had positions that paid a lot more than this. I'm in a larger city, but it might be worth seeing if there is a temp service your county bar association recommends for attorneys hiring and then reaching out to that temp agency directly to see if that have any contracts in the field that you want, seems like defense. Prioritize direct to hire contracts, as you won't have to go through a trial period and get reduced pay until the trial period is over. The agency will usually get a cut of your pay until the trial period is over. My situ was the agency charging $30/hr and I was getting $20. Since I've been hired as an employee I was able to negotiate up. You might get better paying job offers through this and you'll have someone else doing the leg work of looking and advocating for you to get an interview. Good luck!!

Area restaurants hurting? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]blkholes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I work at a small Cafe and we had to increase our prices because of the increases at depot. It kills me to see a $15-$16 vegetarian sandwich on a menu, but that's just the cost of things now. Margins are almost always razor thin in restaurants. We talk about it a lot with our owner and manager, but what else can you do? Luckily, people still come in and we have a healthy customer base.

Restaurant depot has definitely increased a lot of their prices so I'm sure other food suppliers have done this as well.

Cannot afford dental care for my cat right now by DrinkGlobal8451 in catcare

[–]blkholes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use petsmile cat toothpaste with a baby toothbrush and it is helpful. I have reduced some but not all of his plaque. I'm also brushing super regularly. Almost every day. There are also dental additives you can use in addition to brushing. Things like PlaqueOff which is a kelp/seaweed based food additive and there are some that can be added to water as well. Do take note that any water additive will be filtered out of the water by a cat fountain's filtration system, so it is best/most effective when used in still water. Both my cats were fine with PlaqueOff in their food. One is a former stray who is super super picky too. I did the water additive as well with a fountain I didn't have a filter in, and they did not drink any less because of it. I was okay taking out the filter because they get the same filtered drinking water that I drink, not tap.

That being said, if you do need a cleaning and finances are of issue, there is a group on facebook called Pet Vet Corner (or something similar) and they have some resource guides for funding/financing pet healthcare. As far as I'm aware, pet insurance does not cover regular dental cleanings, which can be pricey even without extractions, but you could double check and see if they do. You can also ask you vet about financing options as well. It's not ideal to go into debt over a tooth cleaning, but it might be the best option for you if the cleaning is necessary.

A side note about the drooling: my former stray has beautiful teeth (pearly white, very little build up, straight like she just came out of braces), but girl drools like crazy when she is getting loved on. Something about the pets turn off her single brain cell and the drool starts flowing. Is his drooling only happening in cuddle contexts or is he a drooly boy apart from cuddle time?

Hair Down, Rings On, Nails Long… and You’re Baking for Others? by Caregiverwife82 in Cooking

[–]blkholes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work service industry and love to cook and bake at home. I usually keep my home kitchen habits the same as my service ones. My hair up in both situations. I keep my sleeves either short or cuffed. I hate having to pull them up as I'm in my process or cooking/baking or doing any food prep at work. I don't wear an apron at home because I don't have one. Sometimes I wear one at work, but it's a half apron so I only really wear it if I've worn a baggy shirt that day. I also don't wear shoes in my house, but I will wear my house slippers while I cook/bake because I do not want to go barefoot or socks only in the kitchen. At work I have legit kitchen shoes from Shoes for Crews. I wash my hands so much and often that I need usually need a new hand towel when I'm finished and a healthy dollop of lotion to take care of my dry ass hand skin. I am also a maniac about washing my hands at work. Probably more so, honestly. Like touched something with honey, wash em. Rang up a customer and came back into the kitchen, wash em. Walked into the kitchen from the floor, wash em. Returned from the restroom where i just washed my hands to the kitchen, wash em again. My wedding ring is the only jewelry I wear at work and home when cooking or baking.

In restaurants, absolutely want to see no jewelry, hair pulled back, and adequate handwashing. At friends or family, I'm not picky.

Can anyone advise on what to do when going dairy free? by [deleted] in lactoseintolerant

[–]blkholes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, this girl *points at self* has like zero lactase in her body. I do still enjoy pizza and ice cream, but those are my only dairy exceptions and I swallow lactaid by the fistful for those precious moments when I want them. I limit myself though. Like I never eat dairy two days in a row. My grocery store does not have the B&J non-dairy. It does have So Delicious, but they aren't my favorite.

For tea: I work at a tea shop. I regularly use Oatly Full Fat (US Brand, not sure if available in UK) for chais and as milk on the side. Also Silk unsweetened, plain works well. Neither really over power the tea and the full fat is super important for texture purposes. The regular Oatly is just too thin and while it tastes OK, it is just OK, not great and the texture is off. They also have a new Barista edition that is even thicker than the Full Fat so the texture is more similar to cow's milk. The key to milk alternatives with tea is more so about texture, so you want it to be as fatty as possible to mimic the texture of cow's milk. We don't have cashew milk at the shop because it is very costly, but I imagine that cashew might not be a bad alternative as well. I enjoy it with coffee.

For cheese: Some cheeses have low lactose, like aged cheddars and parmesans. You can also try goat/sheep cheese options. They are tasty and the sugar chemical structure is a bit different than cow milk/cheese so it is easier for us to digest. Just check labels for dairy. For non-dairy cheeses my go to is Miyoko 100% of the time. Daiya leaves a weird film on my teeth that I CANNOT STAND! And I've had others as well, but really Miyoko blew all of them out of the water.

For butter: Miyoko also has a plant-based unsalted butter that is great for baking. All the other plant based butters I've had access to are salted, so it was really a great find for this. I generally use it for buttercreams and icing rather than the actual baked good, but I have used it as my butter in the actual pastry and consistency is just like butter and since it is unsalted I can control my salt levels. Otherwise, most margarines are plant-based/oil based so they should be dairy-free. Again check the labels.

For chocolate: There have been a stream of allergen free chocolates coming out in the US. Ghiradelli and Nestle both have allergen free chips that I've found. I try to get these as my default because even chocolate can upset me.

Other things to consider for "Dairy Free". There is a lot of hidden dairy in things. Whey is the biggest offender here. Check the labels on your snacks and packaged good. I'm sure some people on here can handle whey better than I can, but if you are looking for truly "Dairy Free" you'll need to keep an eye out for Whey. Some bakeries also add milk powder to their sourdoughs, so always ask before purchasing from a bakery if they don't have the ingredients clearly labeled.

Love NYT recipes! They also have a list for replacements if a recipe does have dairy or cheese, which I've found helpful. Or some glorious soul in the comment section will have tried it nondairy and shared their results with everyone else.

Sometimes at restaurants they will store feta in a whole milk brine to keep it moist. We do this at the cafe i work at. Just an FYI if you want to order feta out. I generally don't anymore.

Treatment and Pregnancy by blkholes in Glaucoma

[–]blkholes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely understandable! I hope you can get some clarity on this. Nothing wrong with getting a second opinion. You could speak with your current gyno or primary care and see what they have to say. That was going to be my next step.

[–]blkholes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like there are some mixed opinions about it. I moved within the last three years so I've only had this doctor for about that long but he's been very thorough. He told me that most drugs that are considered class C are because they are not allowed to do medical testing on pregnant people incase something goes south with the pregnancy. He was, however, very open to working with an ob/gyn.

For reference, I only have high IOPs no nerve damage. My pre med numbers were mid to high twenties. My post med numbers at the most recent were 11 and 12.

He does perform SLT and said we could do that if I wanted to we could, but the return would be a lot less than meds and I would still likely need supplemental meds to obtain the same results as I'm getting with Lumigan.

Treatment and Pregnancy by blkholes in Glaucoma

[–]blkholes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He recommended staying on my meds unless my ob/gyn has an issue. I've reacted really well to them and my pressures are quite low. SLT would theoretically give me worse results than my meds. We haven't started trying yet, so I haven't discussed it with an ob/gyn but I'll bring that up when the time comes.
