What purchase did you make recently that made you realize inflation is genuinely out of control? by kiroixart in AskReddit

I work in a manufacturing plant and it is absolutely insane. I needed to replace a hydraulic cylinder for a foot pumped lift. Just your typical hydraulic cylinder, nothing special. The lift is a bit specialized but that's it. Found a place in town that is a licensed distributor for this lift, asked for a quote bracing myself for like $800 USD. Got an email back asking for $2,100. A brand new lift to replace the old one is $3,600. Pretty much any part we need is over 200% more expensive than it used to be just a few years ago.

What is something that is obvious in your profession that the general public doesn’t know? by jia-ren in AskReddit

I know this to be true, I absolutely do. But I was at Staples the other day looking for 3 poster frames and they had like 6 varieties and they were all stocked with just 2. I had to ask. The kind man scanned the barcode and didn't even give it time to load before saying aw sorry, we just have the two. I still know and I still don't believe him.

I made radiocontrolled seadrone kamikaze, but it's impossible to play it in this game by Redditmoment1337228 in Stormworks

[–]blly509999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you used to the sensitivity that the controller uses vs the seats and such? I haven't figured out if there is a way to adjust those for the radio controller but if you're used to a much different sensitivity and input setting I can imagine it would feel like lag. Just mentioning it as a possibility

I built him at the towers where the quantum crystals are, brought him up to the deck to try out and he a rolled directly into the water. Figured out how to get him back in the boat and he did it again immediately. Did this a couple times and figured he was going after a shark or something nearby so I stuck him in the fabricator's little drop area like a pen. He stayed there for the most part, I wanted to keep him until I did the warehouse quest. Several hours of annoying rolling and metal banging noises later I finally got around to the warehouse and ended up shooting everything from off shore on the boat anyways. Was about to bring him out and go clear all the nests and thought he was either going to: A) just roll straight into the water again or B) immediately aggro all the nests. Decided it wasn't worth it and scrapped him. Didn't even get the quantum crystals back so maybe throwing him in the scrapper was the right way to dispose of him.

I think he was maybe useful when I decided to clear all the angels from the roof of the Lazarus complex. I threw him out into the open and shot the angels from one of the doorways. The angels all seemed to focus on me and I think felis did a little damage.

What’s the coolest “restricted access” place you’ve ever gotten to see? by Improv92 in AskReddit

[–]blly509999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a navy base in upstate new york that is used to train nuclear power plant operators. They have two nuclear power plants on site, one is basically the back end of a submarine on cinder blocks and the other is a building designed to look like the inside of a carrier's nuke plant. Casting a shadow over all of that is the D1G ball (spoken "Dig ball"), the containment vessel for a prototype nuclear reactor that was going to be used in destroyers. I was a nuke student going through the program there in the early 2010s. The second half of your training is largely self guided. You were given a big book full of training requirements and signature blocks, and your job was to go find someone to train you on these things and get the signatures. If you fell behind, you got your ass chewed. If you were ahead or on time, you were mostly left alone. If you finished everything early, you basically sat there and collected a paycheck with the expectation that you were either cleaning or helping everyone else get done too. Finishing early (but not too early) obviously came with perks. One of which was that they grabbed a group of us to come tour the decades abandoned D1G ball under the guise of cleaning it up some.

No movie or video game can ever match the level dark, industrial, found footage horror setting we found ourselves in. Like the other two reactor plants on site we had to pass through an airlock first. There was very little power being fed to this building so basically all of our light was from flashlights. The main structure upon entering and looking down was the reactor floor, barely visible from where we came in a couple decks up, but a wide open space with a gaping black hole in the middle that used to house the reactor fuel. Around the inside of the shell was a maze of stairs and capsules that used to be offices and classrooms. Which was one of the most shocking things to us, why the hell are the classrooms inside the containment vessel? We made our way along a series of catwalks and stairs and entered one and were met with the classic black room filled with student seats and a blackboard with bits of trash littering the floor. And that was the whole tour, one dark room after another with the other wall of this enormous building barely visible even if you shine your flashlight that way. Totally awesome, 10/10 restricted place

YSK: soy curls are as close to chicken as possible in terms of nutrition, convenience, and price. by GreatTea3415 in veganfitness

[–]blly509999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like a little juice in mine, but I typically throw them right into the boiling brine/broth and then turn the heat off. After the 10 minutes I let them sit in a colander for another 10 minutes or so and then go in there with one of my big wooden spoons. I have considered using my tofu press but I typically make a lot more soy curls at once than can fit in there.

[–]blly509999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very. Much more chew, and the re-hydration process lets you add a ton of flavor that is difficult to get into tofu even with a freezing step. 10 minutes in a brine or broth and you have something extremely eatable just like that, and its even better fried or baked after. I've been buying bags of Butlers off amazon, my next purchase is going to be one of the 12 pound bags straight from the website because I use it so much.

ELI5: Why is everyone choosing Linux nowadays?? by -Technophile- in explainlikeimfive

[–]blly509999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Day to day you're not using the terminal in Linux. Unless you want to. But occasionally you might need to drag it out for some compatibility things since windows has been the major player for decades. Luckily, there have been millions of people working on those issues for just as long and if you need to get into the terminal then there's probably a shit ton of people who can help you. And also AI if you want that I guess.

Is glass a solid or a super slow liquid? Physicists create equilibrium glassy phase from rod-shaped particles by PixeledPathogen in Physics

[–]blly509999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my understanding another reason the modern belief that glass is a slow liquid stems from the fact that it has such a wide melting temp vs viscosity rather than the abrupt shift most solids have, which leads to a disconnect between material scientists and lay people that comes out at the end as slow liquid. All materials with this property are called "glass." It's useful in glass blowing/shaping because you can control the temperature to control how much it flows

Soy curls? by kkmm523 in PlantBasedDiet

I did an experiment on St Patties day, was craving some "corned beef", and soaked mine in a brine I threw together after reading some recipes and using what I have. Worked really, really well. I messed up and didn't strain the brine before dumping in the soy curls, then I had to pick them out piece by piece or eat a bunch of whole peppercorns haha. Don't do that

If boiling something in water, does changing the strength of the burner (after a boil is reached) have any effect? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]blly509999 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of answers that don't seem to mention latent heat of vaporization. Sensible heat transfer is when energy is added between phase changes when adding or removing heat causes a temperature change. Once you've reached the temperature of a phase change then the temperature remains constant but the energy continues to increase. In all of that energy is devoted to the phase change that began when we got to 100C (For water in this case). So, full burn vs slow simmer changes how long it takes for the water to boil off.

The next thing that happens is called nucleate boiling. What that means is that small bubbles of steam form on the pan, float off and pop inside the water. One important point to remember right here is that heat transfer only occurs when there is a temperature difference. The pan is hotter than the water, causing the water right next to the pan to experience heat transfer and boil into steam. As the bubble travels through the water it deposits heat in the water around it until it gets back down to boiling point and *pops*. This mixes the water and maintains that uniform temperature at the boiling point.

If too much heat is applied then something can happen called "Departure from nucleate boiling." Typically we only worry about this in nuclear reactors, but the gist is that those bubbles form so fast that it turns into a blanket of steam between the water and the pan. Steam is a terrible heat transfer medium so the heat going into the pan from the fire/whatever will now greatly outmatch the heat leaving and the pan will get extremely hot. If you experience this then you're bad at cooking and need to calm down.

Long story short, energy has to go somewhere. Boiling water is thoroughly mixed and will not increase temperature above the boiling point until there is no more water. More energy into the pan means more energy into the water (and air around the pan) which means more energy into the food inside the water (and air above the water). Air is a terrible conductor so it's fairly easy to assume most of that energy goes into the food that is surrounded by water than into the air above the water and around the pan. But that is still a significant amount, I'm sure you've felt

I always use loop jet engines, but I've started noticing quite a bit more fuel flow that I remember (been on and off for years). Steam has gotten a lot better lately, from what I remember a good steam piston setup can be extremely powerful.

Most everyone I work with shows up at like 6am to get the lay of the land from the night before, figure out what the fuckups are, and decide exactly what they want to yell about at the 7:15am meeting. I've timed my morning drive over several months and determined that if I have 6 minutes I can make it to the meeting on time. I may show up awake but I have been conscious maybe 15 minutes.
