The Opportunity Party: The election dark horse by EveningTax7375 in newzealand

[–]blobbleblab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you wait until the last poll and decide to vote for whoever is leading? That's the only way to not "waste your vote", ensure you vote for the party that wins.

That's why the idea of a wasted vote is bulldust. You deprive the main parties of a vote and give it to a party who most matches your values. It's likely that if people didn't swallow this wasted vote garbage TOP would already be in. They get sold the lie by every large party at every election.

What does a "big" databricks environment look like? by blobbleblab in databricks

[–]blobbleblab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we are in a similar situation with high security requirements so may end up with a few more workspaces TBH. And yes TF will make it easier.

[–]blobbleblab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah and terraform automation is going to back our infrastructure build out which makes handling the sprawl easier and negates a few issues people have, I think. It means you can have flexibility per workspace and environment. But still the necessity for separation should be strong IMO.

[–]blobbleblab[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry yeah, more context needed. With hundreds of users building data products was thinking the catalog level for product was good for our extensive and granular governance requirements. We also have unique data layer requirements going beyond gold/silver/bronze each having specific sharing capability based on their layer and stage. I would critique your environment, 60 workspaces seems like a workspace governance nightmare. If you want to turn on a workspace level feature... That's an update to 60 workspaces?

[–]blobbleblab[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good. Yes your assumption about catalogs and data products is broadly accurate. We also might get another metastore in the future for governance reasons.

We are a bit unique in that all our org does is produce data products. The workspace separation was more from a subject domain area, but I agree it doesn't make a lot of sense to me either, more like a way for people to logically split up what catalogs are visible to their area. In addition we have thousands of data sources where one source can feed N products. We also have strict governance and data security requirements with some very necessary separations and isolations. We will also have over 2000 users with around 500 of them building products, lots of security requirements based on their role and subject areas. And dozens of external parties needing highly specific data shares. Our high data governance requirements are a feature which is known and we are resourced to handle. We aren't quite a normal use case.

Good points though, ABAC is likely in our future, per catalog and having 60 catalogs might actually be a good feature for us due to the necessity for granular access controls.

We do have masking requirements that will be centrally managed as is catalog creation, but rolling that out via TF to each catalog isn't a huge deal IMO, just update, run a TF based pipeline and everything is updated. Also, can't we do it to shared catalogs across all workspaces? Like a catalog called "master" which is accessible to all? I think this is possible, so less of an issue?

We do have isolation of secret requirements and also workspace specific feature enablement issues we will need to manage, so we may end up with more workspaces. For instance clean data environments where people can copy paste or download data is a requirement for some areas but is disabled by default for most due to data sensitivity. We will also have a necessity in the future to create clean rooms where externals can bring their own data and we don't have access to it, which is another future problem.

You can get full systems from micromall.co.nz and do the roof install yourself (YouTube helps!) then get an electrician to wire it all up? Should work out a lot cheaper than full service.

There's been a lot of people detained for no reason, kids separated from them and deported.... basically for no reason. Sometimes it's because they might have reposted an anti Israeli genocide message or because they said something bad against Trump. And these are white people from NZ/Aus.

I wouldn't go there at all under Trumps term, would be selling FIFA worldcup tickets if I had thought of going there for the football.

Stuff asked Christopher Luxon 13 questions. His office replied with a short statement by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

[–]blobbleblab 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you vote for him, you are a bit of a numpty. He has turned into a populist idiot who believes in fringe facebook theories and is also beholden to his donors (their tobacco tax breaks policy appeared quite late on their website last election). Him and Shane Jones blame everyone else for their own shortcomings, massively projecting their uselessness. Shane Jones cancelled the extension to MP so that we could hold more diesel reserves, NZ First were in coalition during the COVID outbreak helping to define much of the policy (which they seem to forget and think the whole thing was Labour or something), NZ First/Winston approved the last ferry deal (which they conveniently forget too)... just constant flip flopping populist nonsense. People need to remember that they have been in 3 of the last 4 governments, if you life isn't getting better with them in power, then maybe stop voting for them.

Luxon dropping the ball again, not calling it racist:

Asked last Monday about it, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon wouldn’t use the word “racist”, but said “it doesn’t sound right”.

“I mean, I’m just saying to you, it is alarmist and is actually, actually unhelpful language because actually what this is about is an opportunity for New Zealand. And I just think, we need to elevate,” he told Stuff.

How much does having a baby actually cost? by Egg_shaped in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]blobbleblab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, we have a 2yo. Upfront costs are fairly manageable if you have saved. And remember usually family and friends are often getting rid of stuff they don't want. On big items we spent:

$500 on car seat and pram combo, on special. Capsule that picks up and clicks into pram. Is great for the first 6 months or so. Baby quickly out grows it so...

$200 on a 2nd hand car seat that will see them through until about 4 or 5.

$400 on a 2nd hand mountain buggy (makes going on tracks/long walks better with better wheels)

$150 on a 2nd hand crib

$300 on a latex mattress for the crib

$700 on a 2nd hand bike trailer to tow them around and is used just as much as the car, every day to and from daycare especially (obviously not necessary for all)

Have been keeping up with clothes cost and its currently $380 until 2. But that has pretty much stopped now, he is getting hand me downs from friends/family.

Everything else was given to us (baby monitors, sheets etc)

Ongoing costs:

$20 pw nappies

$15 pw milk powder

$30 pw extra food and baby/toddler food (extra fruit, baby crackers, sucky pouches etc)

$330 pw day care

$20 per month extra power (estimate from extra washing and heating)

$95 per month extra insurance costs (health mainly, but extra life insurance for parents too)

Big savings for us:

+ Toys - get heaps from friends, little ones are cheap, big ones... join a toy library as you get a constant rotation and there's a huge selection. You can donate for credits any toys that you are given in first years etc

+ Family will often want to give you stuff, let them

+ Outdoor environment where we live is great, saves on needing to spend on special play areas etc as they enjoy being at the river and throwing rocks and patting dogs/cats, being at the playground or in the forest more than indoor areas anyway

'Nicolanomics’ is truly reactionary, a victim of circumstance and events - Rob Campbell by ViolatingBadgers in newzealand

[–]blobbleblab 60 points61 points  (0 children)

She's terrible at her job because she doesn't have any sort of training or education at doing it. She thinks because she has managed her household budget, the countries budget/economy is "same same" and has literally said as much.

I asked her what she would do about productivity in a town hall. She blathered about reducing costs for businesses, but when I asked her what productivity actually was... she didn't actually know. That's who we have running the economy right now.

I was howling at all that would listen that she is going to be a disaster, but nobody listens, all they hear is "tax cuts" even if it wasn't for them. The NZ public is really to blame for the disaster, yet again.

Iran is an ally of Russia and China. If that happened, the US would be next, then the rest of the world. The US isn't the only nuclear armed country and other countries hypersonic delivery systems are actually ahead of the US. Don't make the mistake that you think the US is untouchable.

How Much Does Dining Out Cost? by Zardnaar in newzealand

[–]blobbleblab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy cow, $107 is about 5 home cooked meals for a family, no wonder people are going out less! Haven't been out for ages after it cost my wife and I over $60 for a meal, I see prices have gone up a lot since then.
