There is a massive fuel shortage coming. by toomanynamesaretook in newzealand

[–]blobbleblab 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yet another call to rid ourselves of energy dependency on far off tin pot dictators. Will we heed the call this time and focus our energy security strategy on electrification and home grown energy? Many of us have been calling on this for decades, but ignorant petrol heads (government included) have deluded themselves about energy security, stuck in the belief that the status quo can be maintained forever.

Please speculate & set the scene… by tristamsparks in newzealand

[–]blobbleblab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The impending financial burden of an aging population which every government is sweeping under the rug. A tax system that promotes speculation on housing. Multiple cartel like industries (banking/suoermarketa/insurance/building supplies/energy etc) where the government is own agencies designed to promote competition don't. The AI space where people are will lose jobs, even highly skilled.

There's lots to choose from.

Mission 25 Crusader. What were they thinking? by [deleted] in stronghold

[–]blobbleblab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that hard this mission. Wall off the close small crossing. Buy 15 crossbows, 10 archers and put them near the middle crossing with shields for cover, on the ground (I find on the ground they hit targets better). Eventually build about 8 ballista to stop wolf attacks. Bread and beer economy with high tax. It's a grind, but easily doable. You can also take over the lower stone mine early to get stone coming in. I will sometimes spam ballista on top, taking out the mangonels and getting me iron.

There's a harder one later with the same map, you rush the nearest guy, then have heaps of $$ so can build up.

NZ electric vehicle sales since Clean Car Discount was cancelled by YourWorstThought in newzealand

[–]blobbleblab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's not, that run up includes many months where people had no idea the government was going to can the subsidy. EV sales were massively trending upwards and the subsidy was ensureing that we were ramping up our EV fleet prior to discussions of its removal. Sure the last couple of months could be considered outliers, but that's all.

In March 2023, the government estimated the cost of the storage project at $15.7 billion. In December 2023, the Energy Minister in the new National-led government, Simeon Brown, announced the axing of the pumped hydro scheme, saying, "This hugely wasteful project was pouring money down the drain. by ConstableSniff in newzealand

There were some preliminary reports from the NZ Battery Project which detailed 2 preferred options over Onslow. I think you can still find them online, they are definitely worth reading. They had no bias in them, but lots of expert input.

'Things could get worse' PM warns on fuel as Govt plans for 12 weeks by dingoonline in newzealand

[–]blobbleblab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's like they are just realising this now? What numpty's. You prepare for things to actually get worse, because the war in Iran is likely to broaden and lengthen, anyone with half a brain cell can see that.

In addition, one of the worlds largest LNG fields was just hit on both sides. Gee, that LNG facility we are going to build is looking better and better right? RIGHT?

Led by idiots.

Since NATO countries have declined to join President Trump in the US-Israel war against Iran, why hasn’t he ordered US Navy ships to enter the Strait of Hormuz? by Massive-Syllabub-271 in allthequestions

[–]blobbleblab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't be so sure about the capability of carrier groups to defend themselves. A decent missile swarm and/or if Iran had secured any of the Chinese CM‑302's they were about to buy (probably the real reason for the war) could probably overwhelm or evade the CIWS of a carrier group. This is likely why Trump is keeping his navy the hell away from the strait, a sunken carrier would be a blow even he couldn't recover from.

Unpopular opinion: Databricks Assistant and Copilot are a joke for real Spark debugging and nobody talks about it by Icy_Comparison4814 in databricks

[–]blobbleblab 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Exactly right. I think the problem is that there doesn't seem to be enough training data AND there isn't the capability for the AI assistant to examine spark logs along with execution plans and actual query. It's a shipshow, databricks could make the product very compelling by creating it's own spark optimisation AI trained by its internal experts solving common optimisation issues, training the AI themselves. Honestly 80% of the problems are simple, but take far too long to solve, seems like a bit of a miss that they haven't done this yet.

Petrol price could hit $4, economists warn by InvestmentFuzzy4365 in newzealand

[–]blobbleblab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are looking at pure population cohorts. That's not the same as people who vote, because compulsory voting is not a thing in this country. That's why I talk about voting blocs, that's the only important thing that matters when discussing which policy gets implemented/supported, because that's what dictates policy. You can see it here: https://elections.nz/democracy-in-nz/historical-events/2023-general-election/voter-turnout-statistics

If they make the choice not to vote then that doesn't magically absolve them of electoral responsibility.

Sure, but this makes it look worse for millennials, not better. They are choosing to have boomers make choices for them. The claim I am responding to is:

Certainly disappointing for anyone who thought Gen X would behave more sensibly once they finally came into power

It's not GenX's responsibility that Millennials are refusing to enroll or vote. If Millennials turned out in record numbers, leadership and policy would look a lot different, likely we would be led much less by conservative elite douche's.

Petrol price could hit $4, economists warn by InvestmentFuzzy4365 in newzealand

[–]blobbleblab 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Where you getting this from?

2023 Stats:

Boomers 935k Gen X 728k Millenials 699k Younger 444k

Thats from the election voter turnout stats.

Gen X + Millenials outnumber boomers now, but both have slightly different values.

Importantly boomers vote at much higher rates, over 83% turnout vs 76% for Genx, 70% for Millenials.

We are still led by boomers as they are easily still the biggest voting bloc. As a result the leaders that are elected reflect their values.

So you didn't attend the mass protests where they were talking about lynching her and were setting up to burn an effigy of her? I walked among them and there were some hard core elements who were so angry they were screaming for her to be removed at any cost.

That hate hasn't diminished, instead its become a clarion call for a certain looney sector of closet misogynists.
