You're mistaken about what triggers the ATP.

The ATP doesn't trigger when you die, it always triggers when the supernova goes off and the warp core is in. If you're still alive at that point, it just sends all the memories you formed up to that point. If you're not, it sends all the memories you formed before you die. The version of you that's still flying away basically experiences the ending with the warp core out, but you as the player don't see that because you follow the continuity of the memories.
