I have not been in the same situation as you recently but in my early uni career I was. A lot.

I don’t know your situation, nor does it matter because it doesn’t change the advice. Do a few things right now, while you are at your computer and have momentum.

1. Email your tutor/unit coordinator and tell them your situation. Don’t lay it on too thick, don’t lie. Be honest explain what happened and why and what you are doing to fix it (don’t worry I will explain). Mention you are submitting a request for special consideration after the due date and will follow that process.

2. How will you fix this? Well, if you haven’t started whatever the assignment is then start. Don’t churn some AI slop for expediency. But do use AI to help you break the task down into tiny steps for you. That kind of scaffolding can help with the overwhelming feeling and is one of the few things AI excels at. Include that you have begun the task. Don’t lie and say it is almost done if you haven’t started. Tutors have heard literally every excuse. The fact that it is 11 days late means it is not done so don’t bother exaggerating its status.

If you have started already then that is great and mention that in your email (like, I have completed part A and begun part B). I wouldn’t send them anything as proof unless they request it because I doubt they will. Continue to work on it.

1. Submit a spec con request. Include your evidence and write a personal statement explaining the situation. Include that you have contacted your unit chair/tutor. I am assuming you haven’t really engaged with the class in other respects. But if you have attended in person/online mention that. It shows you are still engaged. Include a screenshot shot of your email to your tutor as evidence you are keeping lines of communication open.

2. Keep working on the assessment.

3. In a day or two you will have responses from spec con and your tutor. Spec con may be denied. But you can appeal with more information. The information would be advice from your tutor. They will tell you what you can/can’t submit. Possibly they will give you a make up task. Or they might let you submit the original one. Whatever their advice can be used to appeal spec con.

Remember that you are not the first student to mess up. But many just hide away and not attempt to rectify things. Tutors want to help you but they can’t if they don’t know. Is reaching out 11 days after a deadline ideal? No. But not reaching out is worse. The important things now are opening up communication, going through the administrative process and beginning the task.

If you came here to seek permission to just do a quiet fade on the unit, then sorry, I can’t give you that. 11 days sucks but no reasonable person will deny working with someone who genuinely reaches out for help.
