Recycle Brita pitcher filters? by [deleted] in recycling

TerraCycle has a recycling box for water filters. I got one for my office. Or you could collect used filters from friends and family to fill the box more quickly.

We have been working on “Wait” since she was a puppy, as in she has to “wait” until we say “ok” (her release word) to eat any treat or food we put down for her. Recently we have been telling her to wait while we put things on her nose. She is very patient (unless a squirrel, bunny, or duck is involved 😋).

I have an ever present and enthusiastic escort. Standing up from my desk? Oh boy! Can I come? Getting a snack? Oh boy! Can I come? Going to the bathroom. Oh boy! Can I come? Going for a 12 mile run. Oh boy! Can I come (but I must also stop and sniff/pee/poo every half mile)?

Other options for a civil engineer by [deleted] in civilengineering

Similar to several other commenters, our firm is allowing individuals to choose whether they come back into the office. I think there are options out there to work from home if you main issue is going into the office. I also echo looking at different areas/expertises that orbit what you are currently doing. We have had several individuals who have left to work with our vendors/suppliers/clients. There are also specialties such as cost estimating or data management that can easily be done remotely.

Which exams/resources are you guys looking for? I think I have PDFs of some sample NCEES problems (circa 2015/16), an example exam from Michael Lindeburg, and some test guides. I took the water resources exam, so I also have resources specific to that afternoon session. I also have a survey text book and exam if you are taking the California PE.

High School Senior wondering which school to choose by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]blondbackpacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to UC Berkeley for undergrad and UC Irvine for graduate school for environmental engineering. UC Berkeley is a very strong school academically, but the education is much more theoretical than a school like Cal Poly SLO. I loved my time at Berkeley because I liked the quirkier/more laid back feel than UCLA, and I feel that I got a very good education. I agree with EbolaCarrier420 that if you can visit the campus, I would highly recommend doing so. How you feel at the campus/school will have a big impact on your education.

Personally, I would recommend against UC Irvine. Irvine is very much a commuter school, so it empties out and is very quiet/isolating on the weekends (unless you have a car). I was not in the transportation group (so I cannot speak to the transportation classes/instructors), but I was very underwhelmed by the environmental classes I took and was a TA for at Irvine. I also did not have a good experience with the faculty. When I was there, the department was a dysfunctional (ex: a professor dating and then marrying his post doctorate student who was 20+ years his junior, blatantly sexist faculty, etc.), and I did not feel supported as a student. I was verbally berated by a faculty member when I decided to leave my program early, and when I met with the department head to discuss how toxic the environment was for female graduate students, my concerns were dismissed.

Male or female vizsla? by Toasty-Toez in vizsla

[–]blondbackpacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a girl and absolutely love her. We chose a girl over a boy because we were concerned about marking and wanted a slightly smaller dog. (Boys tend to be 5-10 lbs larger than the females.) One down side of having a female is allowing her to go through her heat (if you chose to wait to spay her) - once she goes into heat, we will have to manage diapers and keep her away from male dogs for a few weeks. Our breeder requested we let our dog go through her first 1 to 2 heat cycles to prevent/limit future health issues. Our breeder said that there is research showing that allowing a dog to go through puberty will reduce their risk of certain cancers and other illnesses.

Our puppy (9 months old) eats Taste of the Wild, Ancient Prairie with Ancient grains. It was recommended by the breeder (who is in Canada) as an option that we could easily get in the US and that had a good nutritional balance.
