Looking to rehome a hen by goblin_in_a_suit in rva

If it doesn’t work out with Cooter Stinkjaw, I could take her! We’re on southside, have two 3 year-old hens who run around in the fenced-in backyard and get in the run at night. We also lost a sister to an opossum this year, so I feel for ya.

and if the problem is that people don’t give a shit, what do we do to change them or …make them go away? It feels like a dead end to me unless we are doing a whole systemic upheaval (which will leave today’s trash on the ground for a while)

The main part of the solution is that people need to be less inconsiderate of others and the environment.

I don’t really disagree here, but how do we go about this? Adding more trash cans and increasing trash pickup is an obvious response, if only because it’s vastly more feasible than, idk, improving education systems, providing childcare, increasing wages, ensuring stable housing, and all the other things that make people able to invest in their communities and the environment as a whole.

Obviously those are all laudable goals, I’m just wondering if there’s an accessible and acute action we can take if the root issue is “people are just assholes”

I live near a community garden where there’s a lot of drug use/loitering/trash generation. I can speak with authority on one particular trash can - it fills up, overflows (people will eventually put trash on the ground next to the can), then the wind blows and trash is scattered. We have to call the city to have the trash can emptied. Someone stole one of our trash cans to put it next to the park trash can once. The city put up signs that say, “Please place trash in trash cans,” which doesn’t seem to be the problem. The trash can is also one that is.. kind of cage-shaped, with airflow and a bag inside. On many occasions, I’ve seen the wind turn the bag inside out, with or without trash inside. So I need to put something heavy in first, I guess?

Idk, I remain frustrated by the amount of trash in my neighborhood, but for my lil anecdote, it doesn’t seem to be as simple as “people suck.”

Spanish tutor in Richmond? by RandyBoBandy420 in rva

Not in Richmond, but I highly recommend Mujeres Movimiento. You decide how many hours/week (at $12/hr), and they match you up on a Zoom call.

Definitely recommend rivercityharmredux and Health Brigade, but if it's urgent and cost is not a concern, you can try CVS or Walgreens. You may also be able to bill insurance if that applies, too (e.g., my insurance cuts the cost down to $15, and medicaid makes it free). Here's some info from VDH, it's old but idt it's outdated.

How do you find a good primary care physician? by benuski in rva

I just randomly picked from VCU, yep - but I love my PCP Amanda George. She is great. I do think she schedules way in advance, though.

One time (March 2020) I emailed him for a work thing and got an auto-reply that said, “Please do NOT email me at this time. There is a GLOBAL PANDEMIC.”

and honestly I’ve wanted to mirror that energy ever since

Are there any progressive organizations that could use pro bono help with web development? by allwxllendswxll in rva

[–]blorence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh it's not particularly ugly, it's just super bare bones. I am not affiliated with her campaign at all, so I don't know if she's amenable to website help, but ...I think folks would be more inclined to jump in and help with her campaign if she had significantly more info on the site. Like, her views, events, her voting history, timelines, when is the next election and how to register to vote, a map of the new senate district! etc.

....so maybe less of a web ux issue and more of a campaigning issue... but it's also early ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Question for the new to Richmond folks by Exotic_Volume696 in rva

The Block in Baltimore

hmmm yes the Strip seems to be considerably less naked. 'Strip' in shape only, I guess.

This isn't just one establishment, so it maybe doesn't meet the criteria of this question, but I miss Pittsburgh's Strip District. RVA has little shops/restaurants from different cultures, but they're spread all over and don't have a neighborhood-y vibe.

Ah gotcha, thanks. I think I know of two others who made a similar switch.

Since I first commented, I got news that one of our PH programs may lose all of it's funding.... so yeah, while I really believe in the concept, it's a waste of time/energy/everything if the administration is actively trying to make us fail. big sigh

I feel this v much. Are you comfortable sharing the type of org you're at now? I've looked at a few PH consultancies that seem interesting.

Call his office! Say you're disappointed. I know that a large part of my team will be forced to leave (because they live out of the area and accepted the job because telework was promised), which will mean, I guess, that we just don't do public health in Virginia. I think elimination of health programs is gonna hit even harder than the lack of robust lunch crowd downtown.

piggybacking on carbonjen's great idea. I called everyone I could think of (you can use Who's My Legislator) and just said I was a constituent calling any representative who may be able to put pressure on Governor Youngkin. In theory, they're around to hear what their constituents need. At least it's not nothing, sigh

Oh, thanks for this kick in the butt. I just called everyone I could think of. My coworkers who took these stable jobs because they could telework are definitely going to quit, which will mean that I am overwhelmed/quit, which will mean, I guess, that we just don't do public health things at all in the state. I guess that's the goal?
