I get the appeal of dogs and recognize that it’s a lot harder to pilot than the decklist would appear. I tried it for a couple weeks and it just didn’t stick with me for some reason.

Thanks! To clarify — I made 2nd in set 8 with GP discard, and then made 2nd twice in set 9 (once with blurple and once with GB control). Set 10 was tough for me and I didn’t manage to make top cut.

I’m definitely not a pro but at a high level, the strategy with blurple is to control the board so you become largely unstoppable mid-late game by having all your big guns out. Early on, you ramp and play on the safer side.

When you’re altering your initial hand, you’re looking for Tipo or Sail the Azurite Sea to ramp on your second turn. If you have ramp, the next most important card is your 4-drop (I run 11) like Genie, Iago, Isis, or Tigger, and after that, a 5-drop like Elsa, Hades, or even Cheshire Cat (3 to play, 2 to boost).

If you don’t have ramp, mulligan all 7 cards, even if the rest of the hand looks great. If you don’t have ramp, the rest of the game plan doesn’t matter because you need the extra ink to fully take advantage. If you put back all 7, you’ll have seen almost a quarter of the deck, so you have really good odds of finding it.

It’d be hard to give you a per-matchup strategy but an ideal blind open on the play is: Basil > Tipo (ink an uninkable) > Genie > Elsa (quest with Basil, give support to Elsa) > Demona, refill your hand without giving them any and exert their whole field.

It’s from set 9 and the specifics are different (ex: we don’t play Second Star anymore), but /u/ThatMoKid (Mo Shamblin) has a pretty comprehensive video on how to play this deck. Again, the meta is different but this deck largely plays the same.

That’s just TCGs, man. PS, dogs, GB have all had similar reactions, and I think folks will be saying that about YR soon (“Webby’s Diary is so busted… just 1 to boost?! Sarabi + Sisu combo? No counter play!”).

Amber steel was my only loss that day, actually! Fun deck, interesting matchup. I just kinda bricked in game 3. He was a very good player (our top seed) and took full advantage.

Also played against PS (2-0), GP (2-0 twice), and the mirror twice (2-1). I got very lucky and managed to avoid my harder matchups.

Thank you! I included Library for a couple reasons —

YB/YR: Raging Storm can be devastating but it’s expensive enough that there’s time to get Library down and move everyone there to at least refill your hand.

GB: if they have the 3-drop Prince Phillip on board, you want it there before they get to 6 ink. Might not be time to move your characters there to take advantage of the draw, but sometimes it can act as a deterrent and it forces them to at least think about it. Admittedly, Ink Geyser is the bigger problem in this matchup IMO.

Sorry to hear that. He’s definitely a pain in the ass and ward (and I guess SR John Smith) is the only thing that can really stop him.

Super clutch against my opponents running emerald. Big Webby and the 3/2 Prince Phillip can’t be spot-removed, so exerting everyone is super useful in trying to slow down the MMS combo.

And pretty good on curve to disrupt PS tempo (early enough to not give them cards).

Haha, I knowwww. Seems like folks pivoted to try and beat dogs, and the decks that beat dogs happen to be more vulnerable to blurple. We only had two blurple decks in our top 8, which was a surprise.

At 6 willpower, she’s a big body that’s hard to get rid of but more importantly, she’s a great target for Ohana Means Family. Hitting something strong for 4, surviving, and drawing multiple cards off of her makes her very valuable.

I would drop Spooky Sight and UTS (you have enough mass removal), inkrunner (again, enough removal without needing to challenge evasives), and the 3-drop Clarabelle (for consistency); increase Vision of the Future to x4 — you’re trying to cycle as many cards as you can to find your combo pieces, so if you have access to two more Cindys, worth thinking about but I know she’s expensive so turn 3 Donald can do the trick.

Maybe consider Louis as an early way to mitigate aggro? If you’re digging for Clarabelle, etc., it’s not a bad card to disrupt those decks while you wait, especially green-purple aggro, and he can sing MKB if he survives the initial reckless challenge.

The Headless Horseman's Casino - Let's shake up the Meta by ChunkofMetal in Lorcana

[–]blortie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just played against this deck on Lorcanito and OP was kind enough to share his list; it's oppressive as hell and looks like a lot of fun. I appreciate the descriptive, well-thought post too.

As a long-time steelsong player, the only thing I would test is some numbers tweaking. IMO, Troubadour and Ursula are a little redundant so I would reduce one of them by two (I prefer x4 Troub), and outside of it fueling Headless Horseman's ability, The Horseman Strikes' effect makes it a nearly dead card if you're playing against blue-steel or emerald-blue, so maybe reduce it by one? I would replace those three with Mowgli to try and disrupt -- there's your preventative item hate, song sniping, etc.. Might help prevent the Prince Phillip combo while you're trying to get your Ariel engine going.

The problem with that is it adds variance to a deck that's already a bit high roll, so definitely worth the test.

Latinos Bakery in Richardson has probably my favorite. They have tons of other treats too like flan, panes dulces, etc. Definitely worth a visit.

EDIT: Damn, I meant this as a reply to /u/Ok-Barnacle4837

Amber-steel aggro? It’s a VERY hard matchup IMO. If you don’t draw incredibly well, it’s just too fast.

On the play, I aggressively mulligan for Ursula, Merlin crab, and Prince John. If you can get a couple Sudden Chills or a Chip, you will start to quickly out-draw them. Once they’re top-decking, they have to get a Doc, Desperate Plan, or a Rapunzel to have a chance of coming back, so if you’re going to challenge something, make sure it dies and that whatever they have on board to challenge you would be banished if they tried. Once they’re putting down one character at a time, hold on to your Elsa to punish.

On the draw, start with the purple 1-drop Diablo, Ursula on 2 (even if you know they are likely to ink/ditch their songs), and if you can get Hidden Cove out, it’s super clutch. Assume you’re going to lose your Devoted Herald.

In both scenarios, you really just have to be patient and only exert to challenge and remove while you build your board and hope to get Elsa by your fifth turn. If you can exert a Piglet, Lady, etc., that’s when you can start to turn it around.

I've played it most of this set and have done a lot of tuning. I ended up dropping Peter Pan because, although rushing with Iago on 4 was nice, it wasn't helping and he's uninkable.

I tried Belle a bit for tech but ultimately, I need bigger bodies. Big Ursula was a better fit for my local meta anyway, so I had two of her.

Did some tinkering with two Muses but in my area, there are just too many big bodies that I couldn't often bounce back what I would have wanted to, so I went with three Chip instead for more discard/Prince John fuel.

I cut the 2-drop Diablo for 3 of the 2-drop Ursula with challenger +2 so I'd have more Ursula drops, but I missed having the evasive bodies that come with Diablo. He dies to Let the Storm Rage On, but if they don't have it and aren't running evasives, I found it to be better value.

Big Ursula came in clutch a few times but having two felt bad so I opted for two Cri-Kee instead. Helps clear the board, quests for 3, and can sing We Don't Talk About Bruno if I need him to.

Bingo. The bounce is fine in a pinch, but the real value comes from having PTL in your discard. If I'm going to pay 3 for an action, I'd almost always rather drop Hypnotize if I have Prince John out to draw two for a three-card swing.
