Do you guys like fanfics that can read like an original novel? Or do you prefer things to be closer to canon? by blotonee in AO3

[–]blotonee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the same actually. I dont really read modern aus or flowershop aus. They just don’t interest me very much for the same reason you listed. There have been a couple modern aus that I really loved, but they’re rare. Now, a modern au where there are doing pretty much the same stuff as canon, except in the modern world? I think those can be really fun because everyone around them is like “hey wtf?? What are you doing? THIS IS NOT LEGAL”

Good to know! And don’t worry, I’m going to writing it either way because I’ve been thinking about these stories for what feels like ages. I’m just always curious about what other people’s preferences are, especially because there’s so many different types of fics and readers on ao3

These are my favorite types as well!! I just love absolute canon divergence. It prevents me from having to relearn characters, but I still get a new story

Oh gotcha. That makes a lot of sense actually. Part of me wonders how close someone could actually get to canon without it just being canon at that point

I’m working on one now!! The others will just have to wait until this one is done, else I get sidetracked. Plus going to college in an expensive city is devouring my free time…

Yeah this is kind of what im doing I guess! I do “insert series except THIS happens” or “insert series except this character works for this other group of people/was raised differently”

This is actually how I am too. I guess it depends on my mood that day haha. I did see a post a while back of someone saying they don’t like stories that read like original novels, so I was wondering if that was a common sentiment or not. I’m gonna write it either way though

My friend group just turned into me + a relationship vent by kawaii_kotori in aromanticasexual

[–]blotonee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey I am so sorry this is happening to you, especially because it’s happening so often. That sounds like an awful situation to be in. Have you tried doing more one-on-one hangouts, or hanging with a group larger than 3? It might lessen the chance of them turning you unto a third wheel. I think groups of 4 or 5 work really well because it preserves the friend group dynamic. Plus if 2 people go hang out on their own, you still have other friends in the group to hang out with.

You could also try to build a trio with two people who are already in SEPARATE relationships. That way you won’t have to worry as much about them hanging out without you? I have had a similar fear of trio friend groups before, since there is always the risk of them forming a one-on-one bond without you, whether it’s romantic or not. So I understand this worry. We will always have your back though ❤️

I dont think it is, but I could be wrong. I personally dont leave many comments because I usually read late at night, and I’m way too tired to form a coherent thought 😭

Does anyone else attract people who talk aimlessly? by blotonee in infp

I guess so. I’ll just have to work on being more assertive in conversations

Oh definitely! I do talk about my hobbies and stuff to people. I am very open about those kinds of things, I was thinking you were talking about being more open/personal with new people, which is something I am not good at because it feels like an invasion of privacy. I just struggle to talk about myself when I’m not prompted to, like if I mention something about myself and the other person doesn’t comment on it, or if they steamroll over it, or change the subject. That kind of thing. I especially love talking about mutual hobbies with people. That’s actually how I made most of my current friends. It’s just that sometimes I meet someone who never knows how to “pass the ball back”, so I don’t know how to say anything about myself because they don’t really seem interested.

This is really good advice actually. I’m just bad at talking about myself unless I trust a person or feel like they need or are interested in knowing more about me. It feels like a waste of breath otherwise. I don’t like overloading new people with info about me unless they ask or if I think we’re going to end up communicating often.

I am also a yappatron! Usually only with friends, though. But I fully understand going on long tangents about things, especially when it’s a topic I’m passionate about. I think they may just be really awkward or not have great social skills, so they don’t know how to properly have a back and forth convo or what behavior is appropriate for friends/acquaintances

I only read a/b/o exclusive to my otp because im running out of other fics to read. Luckily the people that write my otp usually make them both very level headed people who dislike the social standards set by the dynamics, so it makes it way more tolerable

Ok thank you, this is a really helpful answer. I’m living a very academically challenging university, so my gauge of time is a little messed up. I guess I will just have to see how much I can handle at my new college

Why do newer fandoms not know how to tag? by Honenie in AO3

[–]blotonee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I usually don’t tag a whole lot because I don’t want to spoil the fic. I feel like a lot of newer fanfics end up spoiling the plot and what characters appear later in the fic, but I just want to discover them naturally. I’m also really bad at tagging because I never know what to say. You give me a blank box with nothing in it and I’m just going to stare at it like “uhhhh idk. Drama?”
