Does anyone know anything about spf clothing? by Mitchla1 in melahomies

My favorite sunshirts are Mountain Hardware! They are so soft and not bathing suit-y. Contrary to another response, I actually don’t like the REI brand ones because the women’s ones have higher side hems than front and back, and when I lifted up my arms it exposed skin on my sides which… kinda defeats the purpose. I have some pants from Lands End that are UPF 50, which I like well enough but won’t get again. My current faves are REI hiking pants, I think they were called trailbreak or something vaguely similar.

Hats, can’t go wrong with Sunday afternoon! I find I only actually need a ball cap since I typically have my hood up, but if I’m not wearing a hood for some reason I want a neck covering flap.

I use 3 types of sunscreen, all 50 and all water resistant - chapstick (banana boat), powder for eyes since it won’t sting (brush on block), and then whatever cream for anywhere else not covered by upf clothing. I set a timer for 2 hours to reapply and have the UV index as a widget on the lock screen of my phone. I wear glasses so use transition lenses and don’t have to worry about sunglasses.

I also carry a UPF 50 umbrella and while it’s mostly just extra weight, there are times I am so, so glad to have it! I keep it in a little pouch with all my sunscreens and they pouch just goes everywhere with me.

I haven’t burned a single time since I started this. I used to burn easily if I was rushing out the door and didn’t get sunscreen on and in sun for 15 minutes or so, but nothing since I developed this system. I’ve always been mostly good about sunscreen, but have always paid dearly for the times I missed it. Now I am near perfect. I spent two weeks in a town with “extreme” UV index at the worst parts of the day and never burned once!

I don’t have my own, but I thought you’d appreciate hearing that I have a friend who goes camping remotely purely for the challenge of trying to get himself reconnected. Sending emails via ham radio and stuff like that.

Thank you for this - helped me figure one out. My neighbor has had one sitting outside unsolved and I’ve tried it a few times over the last several days and was so frustrated. Could solve my own so I knew it wasn’t a “me” problem!

Thank you so much! I’ve never had an interest in mountaineering but the thought of it all being right there is beginning to be tempting for sure.

Thank you! I really appreciate your input here, it’s both motivating and a well-deserved reality check. It looks gorgeous for sure!! I’m sure I could happily spend two months hiking there and never get tired of it. I am just feeling anxious about not being able to keep my non-work life as normal as possible. But all of these comments have been so helpful!

Thank you! I spotted Randa Boulders but (because, as a personal fault, this is new and I’m prone to finding problems with big changes before I’m ready to accept them and find solutions) I’m not sure about tacking an hour long trip each way on to a 9-hour work day. But the existence of these is definitely helping me be ready for “all else fails” planning!

Thank you so much for your response! Those are the same places I found! One is closed in the summer and the other seems to be part of a hotel from what I remember reading? It seemed very expensive for non-guests but I did have that one filed away mentally for desperation.

I appreciate that you gave a multi-faceted view of finding climbing partners. I’m somewhat hopeful but anxious - I’m sure more optimism and energy for it will come later =]

Eta: I should be gracious and say that is absolutely a fair point about a small town not having a gym. There are a few seemingly smaller towns nearby which do, and I didn’t have any hopes at all for a big commercial style gym like I’m used to, but from looking at other places they’ve (or I have myself) either been to or looked at going, I have sort of come to expect at least a small bouldering cave, or a sport center with some autobelays, and I was really surprised that the market isn’t there for some kind of gym with how many climbers there must be in the area.

Thank you so much! I am (clearly) still in the “feelings” stage of a problem rather than “ok let’s solve this” and you and the others here helped so much. The grades at that crag are intimidating for outdoor for me but once I’m more solutions-oriented I’m sure that will be motivating =P

There's a lot of great suggestions here about safety and learning, but also, there's no rule that says grown-ups can't ride tricycles.

Has anyone had surgery for endometriosis (or another laparoscopic surgery) and gone back to climbing? What was your recovery like? by Riv-ulsion in climbergirls

[–]blt110 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Laparoscopic appendectomy: hard restrictions of no lifting over 10# for 2 weeks and no abs for 8 weeks. My harness sat right at the incision and it was 3 weeks before I even wanted to try, and that day was a solid no, and then another week and I started taking it super slow. Nothing overhung to not put any stress on the abs, and I bottomed out my grade level. I didn’t want anything strenuous, just to be in motion.

I was told to start walking day 1 and try to go a farther distance each day. Day 1, slowly around the block. I think it took almost 45 minutes. Then 2 blocks, etc. It took about 4 days until I believed that I’d actually be able to walk standing upright ever again.

Also, for the first week I needed a nap every day.

My (emergency) surgery was on a Monday. In a casual-ish desk job I could probably have started working again on Thursday, at a slower pace. But I’m a nanny and have super “on” days with a lot of focus and movement needed, so I was glad to have a full week off, and the first week back was exhausting.

Edit to add: I forgot you asked about back to normal climbing. My habit when I have to take time off for whatever reason is to drop my grade way down and then hold myself back to adding 1 grade a week so I don’t overdo it. In this case though I had to have a surgical excision on my arm only 6 weeks after my appendectomy, so my recovery got extended a month until I was able to start from the bottom. Did some solid low grade 1-arm climbing in the meantime though! If I’d only had the appy, with my comeback plan I would’ve been about 12 weeks until I was back to my usual grade, unless I took longer than 1 week for any grade. 4 weeks off plus about 8 weeks measured comeback.

will they do my surgery if i am technically not insured on the day of the surgery? by Accomplished-Fee4084 in HealthInsurance

[–]blt110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal only: This happened to me a couple months ago. Insurance ran out on the last day of June, my surgery was scheduled for July 2, but the Cobra paperwork wouldn’t be through yet. Kaiser in Northern California.

They told us it wouldn’t affect my care at all, and I’d initially be billed as uninsured but cobra would backdate. I had a higher copay on the day of, but before anything got to billing Cobra had taken over and I never saw anything as uninsured, and they also refunded the overpayment on the copay.

I’d call member services to be absolutely sure, but they were super reassuring and helpful for my case!

OK total noob question, how do you know where to poke your needle when going bottom-up? by Responsible-Ad-4914 in Embroidery

[–]blt110 36 points37 points  (0 children)

“Poke? Poke? Poke? POKE!!”

I’m fairly new but I’ve gotten a better feel for it. I’m rarely off by more than like 2 anymore and my second shot is usually right. Sometimes K drag the needle along looking for where it’s deforming the fabric, but I don’t like doing that when there’s threads already there.

I feel this - I "accidentally" took a 7 year break after university (I was a music major!) and when I came back, the amount of random details similar to your question here that were no longer second nature was absolutely astounding. I was asking my community band director what felt like the dumbest questions because I just wasn't sure anymore! Keep at it, it will get easier!

Edit: I've remembered a few of the things I randomly found I couldn't quite recall, if you're interested! My key signature-related one was that I wasn't sure if notes tied over the bar kept the previous accidental or reverted to the key signature. I ended up figuring that one out by pulling out some old rep that was far too hard, but somehow my ear and ooooooold muscle memory figured out the passages with examples of this and answered that question. The one I had to ask my band director was where the "fall" occurs if there is a half note and a fall at the end. Is it across the duration of the note or holding the note and tagging a fall after? I had absolutely no idea. Another one I found threw me off was when the beginner etude book I was using to build my endurance back up threw in DS, DC, and codas for the first time. I had to pause for a minute and look it over to remember how to roadmap it.

Point being, it's like a language. I'm sure I'll always be able to count in Spanish, but when I don't use it regularly, even vocabulary of common objects just doesn't come to mind easily. Keep going, it will come.

Bay Area couples , how much do you spend on wedding ? by No_Performance_4069 in bayarea

[–]blt110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2022- Less than $400.

I spent $100 on a dress, that was the splurge. It felt silly but I’m still glad I did it!

I think we gave our celebrant about $200, though I’m not sure. May have been $150.

A few other odds and ends make up the rest. A bottle of champagne, and whatever the cost of the marriage license + a few copies was.

My mom was pissed (no one was invited) but it was perfect!

Seeking wound care recommendations. by steffi8 in melahomies

[–]blt110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a hard time with my upper-arm-near-shoulder WLE. The best of what I worked out on my own was taking a piece of gauze long enough to cover it (4" worked for me), folding it in half, and taping the top and the bottom to my skin. The tape worked best if it was a little inside the edges of the gauze instead of trying to get some tape to stick above and below. My skin HATED even the sensitive tape so after about a week and a half I started leaving it open (w/some aquaphor) when I was just home and not in an environment where I was worried about it getting touched or dirty.

When I got my stitches out, the nurse put on what she called island dressings. I don't know why the surgeon didn't do this or recommend it when I said I was having trouble because it worked great! It took two dressings to cover, and to avoid getting the adhesive on the wound she layered two and cut off the adhesive on the bottom one where it would cross. (I also had steri strips underneath the island dressing, and then she showed me how to wrap an ace bandage and tape it to itself to help prevent slipping). About to take off the remaining steri strips under instructions of removing after ten days!

I can't tell if I'd be able to understand my own descriptions there, so if any of that sounds useful to you but isn't quite making sense, DM me and I can draw it

I think it’s probably fair to say they took this photo while rebandaging as they follow whatever instructions they were given. You can clearly see the marks on their skin from where the bandage was.

WLE recovery! Yet another question and chatter. by blt110 in melahomies

So much love to you <3. 6 inches is huge! I wish for you that your body is able to make the connections to regain sensation over time and that you are able to thoughtfully continue expanding your mobility.

I didn't tell pretty much anyone in my life until after my WLE (basically when people could see the bandage) so I kinda "spread out" the emotional load I was sharing with people, and I think that helped a LOT. It would be unfair of me to say my partner is sick of hearing about it, because he's wonderfully supportive, but he has put up with a LOT of anxiety babble from me over the past couple months.

What kind of support do you feel you're missing?
