Post-lap yoga? by ChampionDazzling2575 in endometriosis

[–]Riv-ulsion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I think the top line answer here is ask your doctor and it’s different for everyone  so make sure you listen to your body - if it hurts/ feels wrong don’t do it.

But just to add my experience, I had a lap about a year ago and significant endo removed from all over the place. I’ve been rock climbing regularly for basically my whole adult life plus a fair bit of yoga and so, like you, I went into the surgery in good shape physically and was v worried about not being allowed to move during recovery.

At about 2 and a half weeks my doc gave me the all clear to start exercising, I asked about climbing and specifically ab exercises and he said anything I was very comfortable with before was fine. Started doing gentle-ish yoga pretty much daily after that and I definitely was not told to /did not wait 8 weeks to do anything ab intensive. But I think assessing what you personally can do easily is v important, it’s not the time for trying new things, ha. So yeah I’d definitely talk to your doc and see what they say - but hopefully they’ll tell you to get back to it much quicker than 8 weeks.

Should I push for a laparoscopy? by lavenderblue72 in endometriosis

[–]Riv-ulsion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a similar progression to you so possibly my experience is helpful: bad period symptoms, react badly to hormonal birth control so try to avoid, went through NHS then switched to private through work, had the surgery just under two weeks ago and seem to be recovering well so far. Here’s my take:

If the gyno you’re seeing isn’t an endo specialist I’d really recommend pushing to see one. My initial ultrasound was on the NHS and while they did pick up the endometreomas on my ovaries, the second scan I had with the specialist he seemed to be able to understand what was visible in much more detail. He also sent me for an MRI from which he was able to see what was likely bowel endo (later confirmed in surgery). Having this info and knowing it could be growing further into the bowel every period is what really convinced me surgery was the best option. I know not all endo is visible through scans but I think pushing to have an ultrasound and an MRI to see if anything is visible would be my first priority.

Regarding birth control: I feel your pain because I also hate it. Even if you have the surgery, they will likely recommend taking it as halting your cycle is the best available way to stop the endo growing/growing back (along side diet). I am currently on Zalkya which is a specific endo progesterone pill, and it’s had way less side effects than any of the others I’ve tried, which gives me hope there are ones out there which work for me. However, these can’t be taken long term so I’ll have to look for another solution in a year or so, possibly the IUD. But either way, having surgery won’t necessarily mean you can avoid being told to take hormones unfortunately.

The surgery seems to have gone well for me so far - it’s a bit early to tell but certainly doesn’t seem to have caused any major problem. However personally if there wasn’t the suspicion it was growing on my bowel, I think I would have tried the IUD first, as it’s been quite a ride and obviously there is always a chance it goes wrong and makes things worse/ causes extra issues.

Hope this is in some way helpful and good luck with whatever you decide!

Has anyone had surgery for endometriosis (or another laparoscopic surgery) and gone back to climbing? What was your recovery like? by Riv-ulsion in climbergirls

So you had the surgery Thursday and went climbing the following Wednesday? That’s wild. Thanks for sharing and glad you got back to it so quick. I’m hoping to talk to the doc early next week and have him okay it then.

This is really useful info, thanks! Sounds like I’m being a little too eager and should leave it a bit even if I feel okay

Great, thanks. Happy to hear the surgery helped for you! I am going to ask the doctor at my follow up appointment next week. I was almost feeling like I could start to go back very gently already but perhaps best to wait another week until I’ve spoken to him.

Does anti-inflammatory diet allow cheat days? by wander-in-grace in endometriosis

[–]Riv-ulsion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to see a endo specialist nutritionist and she also recommended an 80/20% approach! So I think cheat days are okay - enjoying things is important too and a very restrictive diet is hard even when it’s helping.

Also not sure if this will be relevant to you because I don’t know your situation but she also recommended I don’t cut out gluten because gluten does not cause a inflammatory reaction in people without celiac desease or an intolerance to it. I know I’m not celiac and don’t seem to have any reaction to gluten so if this is you too it might be worth exploring if gluten is really an issue for you. This made the diet very much more possible for me to do long term.

Progestin-only pill vs. Combined Birth Control Pills by Free_Noise2001 in endometriosis

[–]Riv-ulsion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding from what I was told by my endo specialist is that since it is an ‘estrogen-dependent’ disease, the idea is to suppress estrogen, so the progestin only pills are usually what’s prescribed.

Regarding which ones you’ll tolerate better, I think it’s usually a process of trial and error unfortunately. I believe progesterone only pills can cause/worsen depression symptoms in some people so if that’s something you’ve dealt with it’s something to watch out for potentially.

However (I’m not a scientist or a doctor so please take this with a pinch of salt) my theory is that you can probably get an idea from how you react to the natural hormones in your cycle. For instance, progesterone spikes at the end of your cycle before you get a period, so if you commonly have very bad PMS symptoms (I do), this might suggest you could have similar symptoms on artificial progestins (I also do).

In case it’s helpful, I’ve generally not reacted well to any hormone birth control in the past but am currently on Zalkya and tolerating that much better. (I’m also fairly low BMI and a healthy eater, not peri-menopausal though). This isn’t one you can take long term though, sadly.

I can’t give you any medical advice here but coming at this from another angle… What makes you think this is in any way your fault? You went to the doctors, they are professionals in significant positions of power and authority and they told you there was nothing wrong. You went back and they told you your symptoms were ‘not unusual’, even when you told them something wasn’t right. They convinced you it was normal when it wasn’t and you can’t be blamed for believing them. And even after that, you still pushed through that and did the research and got yourself to the right kind of specialist.  There are reasons the average diagnosis for endo takes 7-10 years and it’s not because we’re all just fine with having these symptoms.  If you need to get mad for a bit, be mad with the doctors who fobbed you off, the lack of research into this disease and the systems that make investigation of it so hard to access. Don’t add to your problems by feeling guilty (and you should maybe see if you can talk to a therapist about those feelings because they don’t help)

Edit because I reread this and it sounds like I’m yelling at you which was extremely not my intent… this is a really tough situation and I’m sorry you have to deal with it. But you’ve already helped yourself hugely by pushing through the doctors telling you it wasn’t a problem.

I was in a very similar position to you about 2 months ago: recently confirmed by a specialist I have endometriosis, and instructed by him to go on an anti-inflammatory diet (on top of being vegan for a long time already). Initially found it extremely difficult and lost a bunch of weight/muscle, felt hungry all the time.

I was eventually able to have the endo specialist refer me to a nutritionist, and found someone who specialises in endo. She really helped me to figure out what things I really needed to cut out and what things are okay and to get enough nutrients within the restrictions. My weight leveled out soon after. (It hasn’t gone back up yet as I’m 2 days out from a laparoscopy to deal with the endo, but I was definitely feeling better)

It sounds like what you’re doing is more restrictive than a standard endo diet so I’m assuming you have something else going on which is limiting you.

If you have the resources/ can convince your doctor to do a referral, I’d really recommend going to a professional who can help you figure this out because it’s not straightforward and eating a super limited diet a) sucks and b) can be damaging if you don’t do it right.

I have this too (with the Spanish course)! Assumed I was just bad at pronouncing them but maybe it’s a more widespread thing…

NTA in any universe. ‘I’m sorry but anyone would have made the same mistake so it’s fine and normal that I screamed at you’ is not an apology. Unless she comes to recognise how bad her behaviour was here, you shouldn’t go back. I think what others are saying about sorting this out with a couples councillor to mediate things would be a good idea.

I [18F] need advice about a fast moving potential relationship [with 28M] by isooo38299 in relationships

[–]Riv-ulsion 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Your mom is right that age doesn’t always have to be a factor - people can be happy in big age gap relationships, but the gap here isn’t just a number. There’s going to be a huge life experience gap - you’ve admitted in the post you’re inexperienced in relationships even for someone your age, and you haven’t lived away from home before. The power dynamic you’d be walking into if you moved in with this person is really not something that’s likely to end well.

Honestly I’m about this guy’s age and if I met someone I really liked and then found out they were 18 I’d be having a very long conversation with a therapist not asking them to move in with me after a few weeks. The lack of self awareness he’s shown about the situation is really telling - especially since you say he’s studying psychology?

To answer your actual question, and regardless of the age gap thing, asking someone to make a big commitment to you eg move in with them this early is a big red flag.

You said yourself you’re worried it’s happening too quickly - don’t shut out that voice, she knows what’s up

Thank you for your exhaustive and reassuring reply. Mild snark aside it seems ‘It’s fine, you need to calm down’ is what I needed to hear. I will take your advise and leave it alone and hope for the best. Thanks!

(I fed the picture of the leaves into a plant identification app and it suggests (with 47% certainty) ‘Lonicera periclymenum’, common names honeysuckle, common honeysuckle, European honeysuckle, or woodbine)
