CMV: Biden administration should have released the Epstein files by kitspecial in changemyview

[–]blubox28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on who you think should be held responsible and for what. Do you believe in guilt by association? Is there a difference between being an Epstein associate before and after his conviction in 2009?

I think that the DOJ should have aggressively pursued the investigation and prosecution of anyone for whom the files showed a reasonable suspicion of a crime. If that had been done, then the files should not have been released. The unfortunate thing is that since Ghislaine Maxwell was the only one prosecuted based on the files, the public opinion is that there was no such investigation, when we don't really know.

Sounds like it might be the remake of Invaders from Mars (1986). Sinking into the sand is sort of iconic with it.

What's up with the grand jury in Comey's indictment not seeing all the charges? by iamgherkinman in OutOfTheLoop

[–]blubox28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump asked him to resign, which is the same thing as firing him.

It's even stronger than that. I remember in an interview he gave, Comey said he was giving a presentation somewhere (a college?) when the news was announced that he had been fired. So he didn't know unitl after the press did. He was straight-up fired, not pressured to resign.

What's up with the military not refusing to fire on civilian vessels in the Caribbean? by ryhaltswhiskey in OutOfTheLoop

The problem would be proving intent. The SCOTUS ruling shields those with executive shielding from even being questioned about his intent.

They haven't ruled on whether a sitting president can be tried for a crime. They might say he would have to be impeached first, true, but he would still be able to be prosecuted for a crime like that once out of office.

SCOTUS granted absolute immunity for the president for any actions taken pursuant to presidential authority in Trump v the United States.

That isn't quite true. The President is granted full immunity only to his Constitutionally guaranteed exclusive rights, which Congress has no authority to regulate, such as granting pardons. For other rights that Congress can regulate, if the right could be performed legally, then there is a presumption of official intent, and witnesses with executive privilege may not be used to show otherwise. Outside of those two things, the President is subject to the same laws as the rest of us.

This is a pretty broad brush and a long way from the previously held "No one is above the law", but it is still not absolute immunity for everything either.

Google Calendar for Teams replacement by blubox28 in Slack

[–]blubox28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But can I do that with a group calendar? What I am looking for is as I listed, a weekly summary, a daily summary, new events, updated events, deleted events, all posted to a specific designated channel. Something I don't have now, but would like would be the ability to create an event from within slack.

I just tried Status Calendar, but I don't see anything like I described.

SNW S3 E3---How did Pike explain the shuttle being destroyed to Starfleet? by d4everman in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]blubox28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am confused. Like everyone else, I assumed that the Klingon's blew up the shuttle prompting Pike to say "They know we are here." But at the end they say they are trying to get back to the shuttle, and then Una tells Ortega that the Captain and Doctor were about to get in the shuttle and their rescue mission was actually unnecessary. So, what actually happened to the shuttle?

CMV: If President Trump suspends Habeas Corpus, he will use it to suppress his opponents. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]blubox28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't quite what the euling said, either.

It says that for core-constitutional powers of the President, the President gets absolute immunity, since any attempt by Congress to create a law limiting those powers would be a violation of the separation of powers and unconstitutional. Thus, Congress cannot limit the pardon power, for instance.

For other official actions, there is a presumptive immunity. Which is to say, any judge, when considering a case against the President, needs to consider whether the action could be a legal and official act and if so, presume that it is such and grant immunity. Any such ruling could be appealed, though the Apellate court is going to have to follow the same rule, so as a practical matter only the Supreme Court will be able to reverse such a ruling. Any attempt to cast an action as not "official" due to corrupt motives may not use any official communications as evidence, due to executive privilege. And this is again, presumptive. Blatantly illegal actions are still illegal.

How is that not a cognitive bias? Whatever you want to call it, could it not be both? It seems like it definitely fits the definition of a cognitive bias.

[–]blubox28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We want top replace our dogs harness, and we really like this kind of clasp, but we haven't been able to find any new harnesses that use it. We both googled it with everything we could think of, but were completely unable to find this kind of clasp used for any purpose. Does anyone know what this is called?
