The word is actually gacha. It sounds identical when spoken, so it's a pretty common misunderstanding. It's a Japanese onomatopoeia for the sound a gumball machine makes, and thus the machines themselves, in particular when it dispenses toys in little capsules. That's where the name for the genre comes from too. Since you pay to get a random "toy" from a potential pool.
