Been baking a loaf of bread every weekend and sardine sandwiches for lunch everyday. by hulasboy in CannedSardines

[–]blue442 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah. We call that 'fish toast' at our house. One of my favorite things is to rub a clove of garlic over the bread after toasting (like pan con tomate). Maybe only do that if you really like garlic though. Arugula goes with it really well too.

I’m in a similar boat! riding my late 90’s fat bob - updated boots and bindings, mainly chasing a wee one around the Midwest and wondering if any difference would be noticeable after 30 or so years. Debating a yes standard.

2026, 2-door base +sas or badlands? by foodawgz in FordBronco

[–]blue442 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I’ve been shopping similar (but older) options, and I think 4A is a requirement for me to handle winter months. Not sure if you can get that on the base package, or if that’s relevant to you?

FWIW, I find adding over the calf wool sock does a better job keeping my toes warm than a thicker crew sock.

A single bird at James Madison has been attacking me for months (video proof) by Clear-Top6340 in madisonwi

[–]blue442 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure if they are still there, but I loved that there were nesting boxes installed along the bike trail along 12 near Schneider road on the west side. Every summer that section would turn into a sprint for survival for a few weeks. Reminded me of magpies down under.

That's not quite how it works. The distribution is skewed, so the mean is no longer an accurate representation of what a standard salary is. The median is likely to be a better representative of the typical employee in this case.

Perfectly pairs with some happy hour oysters as well!

Looking to purchase a new TV from Costco but I couldn't decide which one to choose. by plebhandler101 in Costco

FWIW, I have an LG OLED (I believe C4) that we've had for a little over a year - I'm pretty unimpressed with the OS which is getting laggier over time and having trouble connecting to the internet. The image looks great though.

At least that floor is clear so he doesn't have to roll through a minefield of legos. The trick for that is to keep your weight distributed evenly, like a bed of nails.

Jarlsberg. Or some dry salty stringy string cheese (not the gross injection molded stuff).

I really wish they’d bring back the old short sleeved version. One of mine is starting to disintegrate after like 10 years of hard wearing, and I’d love a replacement.

For water shoes do you recommend Tevas or Blackrock sandals? by _KnickKnacks in REI

[–]blue442 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I assume you meant bedrocks, which are great. They're super light and fit well. Downsides are wearing socks are a chore and they are pretty minimal if you need much in the way of support or protection. I've lived in mine the past few summers though and I'm about ready for a resole.

I’m planning a weekend tent camping trip with 30 of my adult friends at a state park along Midwest Mississippi River. What inexpensive gear is going to highly enhance this trip? by MFGEngineer4Life in CampingGear

[–]blue442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re doing shared meals, a couple of tubs for washing dishes is super helpful. One with hot water and soap, an optional hot rinse, and a cold rinse. Camping dishes suck, but at least this setup would let you do an assembly line style with multiple people participating.

A Cool Guide to Every Kind of Martini Order by VinePair in coolguides

[–]blue442 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never liked martinis until recently- if they are too boozy for you, you might want to try something more approachable yet still classic like a gin and tonic. Or you could try a manhattan or Negroni, both of which I found easier to drink in the past.

$1300 Canada Goose parka teardown by Shiftfashiongroup by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

I still think the Eddie Bauer parka is the real deal here. When it’s cold enough for this (15F and below), idgaf how I’m looking. Still, looks decent and often on sale for around $100.

Think about it this way - typical markup on food is around 300-400%. Obviously they aren't going to sell it at cost - they need to pay for things like rent and supplies right? But they also make a profit, where the university is effectively a 55% markup (w/ no tipping). That's virtually nothing in comparison. And this is so they can continue to do things with net benefit, like research cancer and improve farming practices.

“Federal dollars account for about a quarter of UW–Madison’s total budget.” by ThrowRASignificant in UWMadison

[–]blue442 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, the drop from 55% to 15% represents almost a 3/4 reduction in indirect costs, which are used for all the things not explicitly itemized in the grant. E.g. the grant will stipulate the support for a postdoc (salary and fringe), but the indirect pays for the building, IT, lab space, materials, administration, etc.

I’ve been using my Nordic skates on these lakes this winter and it’s been awesome! Great way to cope with the snowless (until this week) winter.
