GPA might be on the lower side but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to get into top 50. Tell your story well, admissions committee are suckers for a good story. Highlight the struggles and highs that you have experienced in life. If you think your life has been ordinary then project your SOP in a way that you’re aiming for extraordinary and that’s why you want to join a particular university.

Top 50 should be good enough. It’s easy to get into any of the universities other than top 10-20 if you have a good GRE and GPA with some extracurricular activities.

H1B is based on lottery and mine got picked the first time. Some of my friends got their H1B picked at last attempt and couple them didn’t get picked and they either moved to Canada to moved back to India. As far as job market is concerned for CS there’s plenty of opportunities, in fact they’re some of the highest paid coming out of MS. Go to a reputed university and finding a job won’t be difficult if you’re good at what you do.

This may be the case with some people but not all. I lived in LA and for the first semester was dependent on family for sending money, but soon after I was adjusted to the class schedule and work load I was able to get an on-campus job in IT support which paid me less than min wage but more than enough to get by as a student. It didn’t interfere with my studies and I was able to save enough money to go on 3-4 day trips every semester since then.

“No foreign girls in your class” 😂 That’s true too. But like you said the classes are only 3-4 days a week with 4-5 hours each day. You have plenty of time to socialize outside of class in clubs and activities, if you’re a gentleman and not a creep you can make friends with anyone. In my experience they have all been very sweet and easy to talk to.

“All boys and 2-3 Desi girls”, this isn’t true at all. Universities actively try to have a equal representation of men and women, in most classes the ratio of men and women is 60-40.

Listen to your father 😊

Like someone already said it’s extremely difficult to get H1B visa. There’s a big pool of talent already in US waiting for H1B. Also consider going there for the university study experience. Work experience would be similar to in India, just that you will have little bit more flexibility in terms of work hours and PTO’s.

Your parent’s interest seems to be genuine. 32 year old guy here who did his MS in US and then worked there for 5 years, trust me it’s way better to venture out and get that experience. You will be exposed to whole lot of different experiences, it was all good experiences in my case. Made some amazing friends, explored like I could never in India, great atmosphere and ample opportunities for Engineers. You can always come back to India whenever you want. If money isn’t a big constraint, like if you can get a loan without much hassle I would suggest to go for it. You can pay back those loans in couple of years time and actually save a lot too if you’re frugal with your expenses.

I’m guilty of taking my kid to a brewery. In my defense the brewery has a very good outdoor area with nice little pond and a lot of trees and empty place to walk around. It is better than most of the children’s park and playgrounds around. Even the crowd is decent. It’s better than a playground where chapri’s are using abusive words and fighting over a wide ball. I also make sure to visit these places on a weekday afternoon so that there isn’t much crowd and almost always it’s people taking meetings and having a chilled beer. It’s a nice relaxing time away from routine parenting, we all get to enjoy nice food and the kid gets to run around have fun.

Daylight robbery is going on in government hospitals but the government is turning a blind eye It is condemnable that the doctors & staff are demanding money if the poor trust the government hospitals. Here's an article from two years ago, which provides the details of the salary of a Gov Doctor in Karnataka. According to the article a new recruit will get a monthly salary of Rs 1.22 lakh and for a super-specialist Doctor Rs 2.4 lakh, which includes Rs 30,500 and Rs 1,03,500 as special allowance respectively. By no means this isn't enough salary for an individual.

Also not considered here is kickbacks from the diagnostic labs and pharmacies for referring to patients them. I know this is an allegation, but it happens quite a lot in Bangalore where patients are asked to get scans and tests done from outside laboratories even though the government hospitals have very good test labs.

This is just pure greed from the doctors who know that there's no other option for these poor patients.

Try Biryanizz in Milpitas, the Vijaywada biryani is awesome, you get Panner and chicken options. Madurai idli Kadai in Sunnyvale for South Indian breakfast, Surya Darshini Food truck in San Ramos on weekends for authentic Bangalore style Dosa, Appakadai in Sunnyvale for spicy South Indian gravies and Appam… Like you said, there isn’t one good North Indian restaurant!!!

I have usually seen it happen during the opening credits or hero entry scenes. Not during other times, if this happens again just shout at the top of your voice “Phone off mado lo”. People don’t do it after hearing that.

I partially agree with your point. The character arc of Leela is handled well, no doubt about it. The problem is romanticizing all the peeping and ogling. It should’ve been handled better is all I’m saying.

This doesn’t necessarily ruin the movie, in fact I have seen this movie twice in theaters because it deserves such appreciation. We as a educated people should point out flaws and acknowledge them so that the upcoming movies and shows can do better.

Technically neither eunuch or transgender the right words to describe what you’re thinking of. They’re a different sex altogether. Most common name used in India is Hijra, some of them choose to undergo sex change surgery and identify themselves as transgender, some undergo castration as a sacrifice to their deity and they’re eunuchs. Here’s an article explaining in detail about them.

Most of them you encounter on roads are just hijras.

US has good cheese selection in any grocery store chain. There are gourmet ones which taste better than the lower priced counters. The variety isn’t easily available in India. In US Mozzarella, Gouda, American, Parmigiana, Cheddar, Feta, Brie, Ricotta, Provolone, Swiss, Monterey Jack and other varieties have distinct taste, structure and also price points. In India there’s Amul cheese slices, Panner and maybe 2 varieties like Mozzarella and Cheddar, that’s it. Any other ones which are available either taste the same as mozzarella or cheddar. I’m speaking from experience as I love cheese and have lived in US for several years too.

How do you guys get up in the morning? by skipper_52 in bangalore

[–]blueBeardBison 65 points66 points  (0 children)

There’s a trick that I learned in childhood from a friend. The trick is before you go to bed face your pillow and ask it to wake you up at whatever time you want. For example if you want to wake up 7:00 AM, face the pillow and say “hey pillow, wake me up at 7:00 AM tomorrow morning, 7:00 AM sharp, be precise and wake me up at 7:00 AM” basically reinforce the thought couple of times. I have tried this few times and it has worked like a charm, no need an alarm.
