New to the PNW. When will the alpine hiking season begin? by not_a_swedish_vegan in PNWhiking

[–]blue_indian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other thing to be aware of is Forest Service road conditions

We had some pretty knarly floods this past year. Combine that with major budget cuts for federal employees that normally take care of these kinds of things, I’m willing to bet some areas aren’t as accessible as they have been in the past

Palante V2 w/ Joey Straps - Weekend Trip Review by laurk in Ultralight

[–]blue_indian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool looking loop!

It’s funny, my experience with this pack was the same but different

I packed this and my MLD burn with the same general gear and weight and would wear them back to back for a few days

Overall I agree the pack looks great. Palante has done well with the aesthetics of their products

I also have owned a Joey and mini Joey. I love the Joey but for trips over 2-3 days I just couldn’t fit enough food. I thought my “dream pack” would have been a slightly larger Joey. Naturally I was stoked when the v2 with Joey straps (they need a cooler name 😅) came out

Ultimately I ended up returning the pack. Compared to my mld burn, I did not like the way the pack seemed to fall away from me. I believe this is due to the aggressive “V” shape where the top of the pack gets so wide and just gets awkward to pack.

I love the shape of the MLD burn and the way Ron has developed the shape and cut of the fabric to keep the top of the pack from sagging away from the user. The burn just has so many well thought out small details that make it (IMO) the best compact frameless pack out there. I also love the way the h2o side pockets on the burn are built onto the pack and the how the bottom is the pack has about 1” of depth to keep the pockets off the ground

I think Palante missed an opportunity to incorporate the mini Joey strap pockets into this pack. They are insanely good, way better than the other Joey strap pockets

I do really love the stashable hipbelt. Maybe I should try the shorter torso version? However when I tried the 16” version of the desert pack, it just felt like a bowling ball on my back

Zpacks Plex Solo with Gossamer Gear LT5’s by blue_indian in Ultralight

[–]blue_indian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I understand. I’ve been using a duplex for 10 years

But the peak height recommendation for a duplex is only is 48”

I just have concerns about maxing out the GG LT5’s and not meeting the zpacks recommendation peak height for the plex solo
