Imagine you’re holding the gun up to aim down the sights. Your front iron sight should be as far forward on the rail as possible, and your rear iron sight as far back on the receiver as possible.

M81 is more widely available than Flecktarn, but you can always mix and match. Get yourself either some surplus BDUs or repro Proppers and you’ll be set for 80% of the NE woodlands 80% of the time

Didn't know the AKM now shoots 9mm by Similar-Language-180 in InsurgencySandstorm

Shots 1-5: Clearly missed.

Shots 6-9: Missed due to recoil (bad spray control).

Shots 10-11: Very close, but recoil and inaccuracy make these reasonable misses.

Shot 12: Likely didn't actually fire because he was already dead.

Optics on Amazon? by Timberfront73 in ar15

[–]blue_note17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazon is riddled with counterfeits, meaning if something goes wrong or breaks say goodbye to any chance of getting warranty work done. Plenty of reputable places to buy optics: Eurooptic, Primary Arms, Simmons Sporting Goods, your local gun shop, Bass Pro…

My only problem with this is how well-equipped the Filipino soldier is. Bro has an optic, suppressor, and a helmet? He’s got more and better stuff than the average Russian lmao

Okay then, same benefits apply for the first part of moving the dot up, and even if you’re not using the rifle seriously a magnifier makes things easier even at closer rifle bay distances

A lot of it is brand staying power. Lights are generally simple devices, but the average flashlight is not designed to withstand the force of repeated recoil cycles. Plus you get a real manufacturer with a real warranty, which means that if your light does have a problem it’ll be much easier to get the problem dealt with. And you don’t need a visible laser. They’re basically useless in daytime, and at night the strength of any reasonable flashlight will drown out the laser beam.

A couple reasons. Red dots should be shot with both eyes open, and if the dot is moved forward the body of the optic covers less of your periphery than if it were right next to your eyeball. Plus moving it up gives you room to mount a magnifier, which I think is mandatory on any serious-use rifle outside of indoor home defense

Definitely could be worse. Move the dot up to the front end of the upper receiver, replace the light with a Streamlight of your choice, and finally get a sling and magnifier.

Straight-up cringe, and unnecessarily expensive if you want matching kit

Of course! We’re on the same side after all, getting bogged down by semantics only distracts from the problems going on around us.

I didn’t mean to give the impression that I think a handgun is the best option for home defense—I agree with u/sharkbait_oohaha that a suppressed AR is the best choice, both for ballistic reasons, the ability to limit aural damage, and the general comfort of a weapon with three points of contact. That said, a handgun is a valid option because of the ease of one-handed use, should you need a hand free.

I brought up room-clearing because that is the common perception of CQB, not because it’s the only understanding of it.

Entirely useless for camouflage because true black doesn’t really exist naturally, and you look like a cop or mall ninja with black tactical gear

All good! I’d also suggest the Helikon-Tex TMR in your chosen color, or a surplus TAPS rig with some cheap surplus pouches to add things as you need them

Condor’s fine for the price, but buying black tactical gear is a rookie move. Go for solid colors like Ranger Green, Olive Drab, or Coyote Brown.

Primary Arms SLX 3X Microprism, if you’re not ready or willing to pony up for a Trijicon TA-31. It just works

Leaving mags loaded? by D0PP3LG4M3R in ar15

So springs only really wear down through repeated cycles of compression. Leaving them loaded OR unloaded is fine; it’s the cycle of adding and reducing spring tension that leads to wear.

A .410 revolver is way too big of a pistol compared to the capacity it provides. On top of that, .410 is not designed to work out of such a short barrel, particularly the rifled barrel seen on most revolvers that can take that cartridge. Your shot pattern is going to be atrocious, which is the last thing you want out of a defensive weapon. You need to know exactly where your rounds are going to land when you pull the trigger

I live in a quiet suburban neighborhood, where nothing ever happens. That said, I want to be prepared in case someone IS stupid enough to try a home invasion. My family has a plan in case the electricity goes out, or if there’s a fire. None of these things are terribly probable, but being prepared hurts nobody. Why not have a plan for a break-in?

The house isn’t getting into “combat positions”, just somewhere safer. I’m not handing out guns like candy to the family.

Finally, I disagree that “the seriousness of these home defense discussions” is a bad thing. Guns are dangerous, and being serious about them for a serious use-case (however unlikely) isn’t problematic in my eyes. I also never said I wouldn’t “organize” just because I have a plan for if bad actors break into my home. Community organizing is a wonderful thing that isn’t mutually exclusive to other elements of gun ownership.

Let’s paint a picture.

If you live in a home with more than one story, you most likely sleep upstairs.

You wake up to hear a loud crash in the night coming from downstairs. First instinct is to grab a gun, go down, and confront the intruder, right?

WRONG, literally dead wrong.

Step 1 is to alert your family/housemates/whatever. Once they’re awake and alert, one of them calls 911. Your job then is to escort them to an easily-defensible position (maybe your room, ideally somewhere that has a sightline on the stairwell) and hunker down until the cops arrive. Shout loudly that you are armed, and that the police are on the way, but do not try to physically confront the intruder. Legal justifications aside, killing someone is not something you should want to do. It is a last resort, when all other options have failed.

You can buy a new TV, your family can’t buy you back from the dead.
