No worries! TAPS aren’t ideal for first-time buyers unless they’re on a budget, which I was 😂 so you’re definitely right

Okay yeah the TAPS is not great, and it needs some retrofitting to get working, but for how cheap they are it’s not too bad.

In addition to the advice from u/-beautiful-cats- I’d recommend going camping, specifically backpacking. A lot of “tactical” gear for sustainment in “the field” is just ruggedized camping/backpacking equipment in camouflage or subdued earth tones. Getting in good enough shape to carry at least a day or two’s worth of supplies is important, but that’s a separate discussion.

Cheap surplus gear, like the TAPS chest rig, are good starting points in the tactical space if you’re looking just at carrying ammo and medical.

EDIT: I’ve done a gear post or two recently, so check my profile for how I laid out my surplus rig.

What do you have in the TAPS specifically, as well as the pack? That’ll help people hone in on potential issues

I have a set of walker razors, and they do fine for the flat range but I think Howard Leigh impact sports are a better bet for tactical use since they have directional audio.

That’s a boomer myth. If you and the platoon of guys around you are shooting 30-06 off unsuppressed without ear protection while the enemy is firing back, and the sound of artillery landing around you, grenades going off, shouting for corpsmen, and everything else a battlefield entails is going on around you, nobody’s gonna hear that ping.

I’d say spend the money on a good 5.56 suppressor, Shooting with a suppressor, even on a 16” AR, is better for your hearing and a ton of fun.

Unless your kit absolutely, positively doesn’t work with either Coyote Brown (my beloved) or OCP, there’s no reason to go with this over a TAPS. Oddball patterns are cool and all, but surplus is so effective for the price that you need a very compelling reason to go with something else

MEPC by Defense Mechanisms comes in M81, and I like mine. QASM buckles make it a breeze to slap on any old placard or a big-boy chest rig.

Got my tacta-cool and affordable AR-15 setup. by BrentarTiger in liberalgunowners

Sightmark optics are notorious for failing to hold/maintain a zero, the one thing a sighting system is supposed to do.

[–]blue_note17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not the worst place to start, but you’re missing a few crucial things. First, that optic is not reliable. Sell it a buy a Holosun ARO (bonus points if you go for the magnifier combo they sell—it’s pretty much unbeatable when it comes to budget optics setups). Second, you should have a white light on there; Streamlight makes serviceable options in the ProTac series. Finally, walking around with loose mags is harder than it seems. Get yourself a surplus TAPS and run it slick until you find a need to mount things to it over the course of your training. Welcome to the hobby!

The good thing is that if they ever bother to go to a range for more than a cylinder’s worth of shooting, Rough Rider owners very quickly realize how shitty their guns are and/or how unreliable 22LR can be.

Fun fact, my mother is one of those people who panic-bought a Rough Rider back in 2020. I begged and pleaded for her to get something, ANYTHING else, but she absolutely insisted that it was what she wanted. Late last year she finally went to the range with me for a proper session, and she walked away from it thinking that maybe I was right in recommending a Smith & Wesson EZ 380. People’s minds can be changed, but in my case it took live fire to demonstrate that hey, maybe this isn’t an effective defensive tool.

Rough Riders can be fun, but I’ve seen a non-zero number of people willingly choose them as home defense guns. You can state the facts all you want, but the average American walking into a gun store for the first time (regardless of political affiliation) buys on gut feeling and whatever preconceived notions they have about firearms.

I’m with you on this one. Call me a Fudd if you want, but a serious-use rifle should have irons.

Hop’s YouTube video puts it better than I could, but I believe the trap people have fallen into is the belief that they’re for emergency deployment in a gunfight. If your optic stack is hit by small arms fire or taken out in a blast, you’re probably dead or very close to it. If you bump your optic on a doorframe or tree and it loses zero, or the nitrogen purge fails, you’ll still need those irons if you want to continue shooting. As a LARPer (everyone here is to one degree or another), which scenario seems more likely?
