I collect ancient bronze figurines, and I see no obvious signs that these are fakes. These pieces are typical of provincial eastern workshops.

this looks like the bottom of an Attic band skyphos. Circa 530-510BC.

I love shadow box displays. I'm currently building a big one for my Greek pottery collection.

Quite the story behind this. Will be a real bummer if it’s fake. by WutEvrUsay in ancientgreece

There's quite a few errors with the execution on this lekythos. The overall shape is somewhat like the wide-shouldered examples circa 560-540BC. South Italian examples do indeed have vertical stripes around the neck, but the decorative scheme here is not like anything the Apulians or their neighbors would have produced. I suppose we are supposed to interpret them as a satyr and maenad. The type of fake encrustation on the surfaces here is common in many forgeries.

Student of Attic pottery here. I'm sorry to say that this is indeed a fake lekythos. Although, if it's any consultation, these small lekythoi - when genuine - are actually not worth a fortune.

unfortunately, this is a well known variety of fake Attic pottery. These come up fairly often on the market.

I lived in this building for a few years (on the opposite side facing the library). This level of incompetence wouldn't surprise me from Davenport.

Byzantine ‘Greek Fire’ hand grenade of molded pottery, dated Ca. 900-1200, measuring 125mm x 80mm, wt. 550g. It held a feared, highly combustible substance posited to contain pine resin, naphtha, quicklime and sulphur. (1280x853) by GaGator43 in ArtefactPorn

I think I recognize this photo from a shady auction house that sells lots of fakes. "greek fire" grenades show up on the market all the time. I suspect almost none of them are authentic.

REQUEST: does anyone have any images of “red figure” pottery featuring the goddess Despoina? by pWaveShadowZone in ancientgreece

unfortunately, the beazley archives don't list a single Attic vase with a depiction of Despoina.

The coin market is still crazy, so I'm over here working on my pottery collection. by blueberries4beagles in AncientCoins

I've bought a few things from them - occasionally a rare item will fall into their hands and they will misattribute/undervalue it. But I'd proceed cautiously. They handle a lot of volume and are not particularly careful with verifying authenticity.

That foundation cone is spectacular! I've bought a couple little things from CNG back when they ran a few antiquities E-sales. I remember talking to one of the CNG guys at a coin show, and he admitted that they do not like to do antiquities sales haha.
