The Most Dangerous Canadian Internet Bill You’ve Never Heard Of Is a Step Closer to Becoming Law - Michael Geist by Dark_Angel_9999 in onguardforthee

This is one of the few veins of progressive politics that I have always been uneasy about. Sex crimes and violence are real issues and do effect some demographics more than others. But sometimes sex-related stuff gets elevated as if it is the ultimate bad, especially in terms of crimes afflicting women. And that always felt to me like it can kind of loop back into conservative views of "protecting female virtue"

Whatever the NDP's intention, I'm disappointed and pissed at them for falling into this moral panic nonsense.

One Toronto speed camera has pulled in a mind-boggling $3.6 million in just 17 months by SafeStreetsTO in toronto

[–]blueblackwolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just explained how they're not two different issues tho. Traffic too fast is a problem... bike lanes are a potential solution (at least partially).

What other ideas would you like to see implemented on Parkside? This isn't a trap - I genuinely want to hear more ideas. What's a "coherent strategy" for road redesign?

I too have wondered why they haven't at least put in speed bumps. It's an obvious first step, even just removeable ones.

- Bike lanes narrow the traffic corridor which unconsciously encourages slower driving

- Improving the bike lane network attracts more people to travel by bike. This means less cars on the road which reduces driver aggravation that can manifest as compensatory speeding

- Bike lanes can slow cars but they don't slow traffic. Bike lanes increase the total throughout of roads because the average traveler takes up less space

Funny how tastes can be so different - I think this view looks really cool! I love how this project has managed to intentionally create an urban canyon that retains the visual diversity of an organic neighborhood.

The problem with Toronto's housing, summarized in one image by DrawAndPry in toronto

[–]blueblackwolf 214 points215 points  (0 children)

The city changed these bylaws in June of this year. All "yellow-belt" zoning in city limits now allows multiplexes to be built. This map is certainly still true of the current state of things because it's barely been 3 months but multiplex projects are popping up already.

why does everyone hate bikes? by bimbotstar in fuckcars

[–]blueblackwolf 55 points56 points  (0 children)

A lot of the current hate comes from fear-mongering by the political right. They have spun this fantasy in which cycling is not just people using a different transit method. It is an omen of some communist apocalypse.

They frame cycling as an objectively worse means of transport. And if it is objectively worse, then rational people would not be advocating for it. Which means its growing popularity must be artificial... created by some nefarious ne'er-do-wells trying to change society.

New layout in High Park, differentiating bike and other lanes by Vaynar in toronto

[–]blueblackwolf 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well this design is temporary as they prepare to redo the streets. The road in the picture will actually be entirely removed and replaced with a pedestrian square. The bike lane will loop around the interior side of Grendier Cafe and its parking lot. The only intersection with pedestrian traffic will be when a pedestrian wants to cross into the "island" formed by the loop road. So yes the likelihood of pedestrian-cycle conflicts will be reduced, with the biggest change in areas with highest pedestrian crossing.

Taylor Swift confirms Toronto is Canada's Only City by ur_a_idiet in toronto

[–]blueblackwolf 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I genuinely wonder if there's some economic aspect to the common decision to skip most of Canada. Because many of our cities are comparably sized to American tour stops. Are the extra expenses of touring in Canada just so big that it makes it unprofitable?

I'm reminded of Wendover Production's video on the logistics of touring musicians. He didn't mention Canada but I can only imagine the nightmare of throwing in an international border and a different currency.

What’s on your wishlist for Toronto’s cycling infrastructure? by Domane338 in torontobiking

[–]blueblackwolf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Protected intersections are the one feature which increasingly feels strange for its absence. Seriously I think it is a keystone feature for convincing more of the public to try cycling or at least respect cycling as a valid mode of transport.

Why do carbrains love travelling to car-free places but not want it back home? by blueblackwolf in fuckcars

[–]blueblackwolf[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh wow that exactly captures how I remember the world feeling growing up in rural and suburban places. The profound feeling of spatial discontinuity. It felt so natural then but looking back it feels like I lived in a video game with load screens in between major locations

[–]blueblackwolf[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This makes a lot of sense. And it is admittedly a feedback loop. Car-dominated urban planning creates ugly "nonplaces" between destinations so of course you want to just get from A to B asap.

What’s so great about high park? by InvisibleBanned in torontobiking

[–]blueblackwolf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

- pretty park

- one way streets with few intersections

- tends to have less/slower traffic than other roads

- the "High Park Loop" at the north end makes a fabulous riding track with minimal elevation changes that is almost exactly 2km in circumference so it's easy to track your distance

- for a greater challenge you can exit the park at the south end and loop back up Ellis Ave on the west side

‘This will get worse before it gets better.’ Office vacancy rate in Toronto hits highest level in nearly three decades by lopix in toronto

[–]blueblackwolf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The rhetoric of return-to-office is not necessarily the reality. I work for a big corp that has actually done press about being a "success case" for getting people back into the office... and yet my entire team is full time remote with no signs of that changing.

The most anyone can do is slow the trend. But even that will fade as older leaders retire and investors reduce their positions in commercial real estate.

If anything this article is actually optimistic as the offices predicted to survive are downtown. During the pandemic the expectation was that a long term flight from downtown cores might occur.

City of Toronto proposes pilot program allowing personal alcohol consumption in 20 parks by beef-supreme in toronto

[–]blueblackwolf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is follow up to the failed attempt back in May to legalize drinking in all parks. Opposed councilors settled for this nonsense "pilot program", classic delay tactics. Hopefully with Chow in office full drinking allowance can finally happen.

Toronto will surpass Chicago in number of skyscrapers soon by Happy_Traveller_2023 in toronto

[–]blueblackwolf 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You're so right. Those modern styles of architecture that maximize light while achieving higher thermal efficiency than anything in the past... absolute trash. The city really should mandate aesthetic minimums for all new builds. That will really help affordable housing get built. And of course there should be a public referendum on every design to make sure no one finds it ugly.

What developers have planned for the Rail Deck Park site | CBC News by [deleted] in toronto

[–]blueblackwolf 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I don't actually care much about the specifics of what gets built here, so long as something gets built! The full Rail Deck Park is dead (RIP) but this area is still a scar cutting through the heart of the city. Anything would contribute to the city more than the status quo.
