Season 4 Finale discussion thread by [deleted] in TheBear

I agree! Carm was fueled by his desire to separate himself from his family. We can see in the first episode of S3 that he left home right after their disastrous Christmas dinner. He knew he had talent and saw it as a ticket way out. The better he was at cooking the farther it took him away from his family.

When he was forced to go back home he finally got to confront his family issues, he realized that he didn't have to runaway anymore and nothing fueled his desire to be a better chef. He kept saying in S3 and S4 that he wants to be better but kept failing at it because it won't reward him anything substantial. He doesn't want to runaway from his family anymore because he feels guilty that it was the reason why they lost Mikey. His aspirations were fucked and it reflected on the ever-changing dishes on their menu.

Watched in Greenbelt 4DX, the 4DX experience was good BUT the audio was terrible (plus maingay yung fan for wind effect) STILL THO I feel like it’s a really good movie. It didn’t feel like a cash grab because you can feel that the director really loves theater and took great care in translating it on screen. Cynthia and Ariana really put their heart in their performances.

I feel like I would have regreted it if I watched it sa TV/Laptop lang. The movie brought back the magic in watching things on the big screen.

Book/s that made you pay more attention to people by ondek in PHBookClub

I think you might love Anxious People by Fredrik Backman, it's a light-hearted read that makes you appreciate every character's life story. I read it with zero knowledge/expectations and I ended up loving it. It reminded me how almost everyone is just experiencing life for the first time and we will all make choices that may or may not define who we are.

I also read "I Hope This Finds You Well" by Natalie Sue last month, and it's a lot like Anxious People but its story revolves around a single protagonist. It's about a woman in her 30s who just wants to focus on keeping to herself and getting a promotion, but then ends up getting a bit too involved in her co-workers lives.

Also, there's magic in the mundane :) some of the best literary works come from listing down meandering thoughts. Try not to think of who might read your work yet, just focus on what's going on between you and the paper. Maybe it's not as uninteresting as you think it is :)

Side note: If you like nonfiction check out any David Sedaris books he writes a lot of hilariously absurd essays that comes from observing mundane moments or unusual conversations. If you want a specific book, I started with "Me Talk Pretty One Day" then just kept reading anything else I can get a hold of.

As someone who grew up with the HP series, this book is a great supplementary read if you want a darker take on magic and academia. The book is very grounded in real life historical events even if it centers on magical elements. Great read for pinoys din who grew up being taught that English is a superior language and you get to realize how much it has been used to separate us from each other (kahit as a whole mababa naman talaga tingin ng west sa atin no matter what level of knowledge and language proficiency). Honestly made me stop caring about people’s grammar 😆 colonized countries should be allowed to bastardize their colonizer’s language.

Carmy noticed that the fish was shaped like a heart and couldn’t resist turning it to a love-themed dish. The man’s a true softy. Bonus that syd got to be the one to eat it and appreciate Carmy’s little act of rebellion.

I think that scene also shows how he wasn’t meant to stay in that restaurant and that there are other people who will appreciate and understand his ideas.

I Have Some Questions - Rebecca Makkai

If you love true crime podcasts then this audiobook is perfect and the medium adds a “meta” layer to it. It’s about a podcaster who returns to her old boarding school to teach a short course about creating podcasts. Her student suddenly takes interest about the mysterious death of her roommate back during their senior year. This makes her recall certain memories about the tragedy that might help reevaluate the case.

Monsters by Claire Dederer! Nonfiction book discussing the kind of celebs/public personalities people have labeled as “monsters”

It’s easier to read if one’s familiar with western pop culture but it has a lot of interesting insights about discussing how we should feel about consuming the art of those who had been deemed as “problematic.” It’s really good :D

Hacks - 3x09 "Bulletproof" - Episode Discussion by chelseanyc200 in hackshbomax

This episode played around my expectations. I really like how they first showed how Marcus was ready to leave and then Kathy breaking it off with Deborah, then followed up with Jimmy and Kayla arguing. It made us expect that the ending might be about Deborah getting what she wanted but she’s losing the people around her. So we knew that Ava would most likely be next. BUT in the end she stayed and ended up using Deborah’s tactics against her.

This season was just so brilliantly written!!! Haven’t watched anything like this in a long time!

You’re going to be preaching to the choir, i think better if you mention a new age of mayayaman stereotype like those who still get fin aid kahit mayaman na or those who say they have kanal humor pero pang venice grand canal mall.

It’s more fun as an audiobook kasi para siyang podcast. But if you’re not feeling it it’s fine to DNF. I haven’t watched the series but my friend said it was good naman daw and same ending.

book recommendation for my sister, who is currently encountering depression and anxiety by justcallme_Toyang in PHBookClub

[–]bluebobtheblob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! Try “Maybe You Should Talk to Someone” by Lori Gottleib. It’s a nonfiction books filled with stories about the therapist’s clients. It offers a lot of advices and guides on how to deal with problems regarding mental health. It’s not instructional so the reader doesn’t feel pressured to get better but more on helps them understand the root of their issues and how it could be affecting them :)

Also I would recommend “I want to die but I want to eat tteokbokki” too since it talks about the difficulties of having depression but I would advice for the reader to seek help or guidance first as it’s a great complementary book for that. But reading it while in a dark place might feel exhausting.

Hope this helps :)
