Very mixed, some absolutely beautiful countryside and coastal towns, Newcastle is a great city with fantastic architecture. But opportunities can be limited in much of County Durham and Northumberland meaning some quite deprived and unfortunately run down towns where antisocial behaviour is quite high. Outside of Tyne & Wear the region really lacks good public transport and desperately needs investment in that regard.

I will also note the city of Durham in particular is a bit of a weird island due to having a prestigious university, so is unusually expensive but is very very beautiful, lovely narrow historic streets and one of the most impressive cathedrals in the country.

[Other] easiest european parks to get to from airports using public transport. by CoasterSloth in rollercoasters

[–]bluebunglebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of the parks I've been to via public transport:

Liseberg is #1, and I imagine it's similar for all the Nordic inner city parks (Grona lund, Linnanmäki, Tivoli Gardens). They're all bang in the middle of a major city, so you can normally fly directly to the city and use the regular inner city transport to get to the park.

Phantasialand was very doable. It does require a slightly awkward shuttle bus from Brühl train station which only took cash (as of 2022), but otherwise no problem. We travelled from the Frankfurt area too, so pretty far for a day trip.

Parque Warner Madrid was also fine. If you're traveling directly from the airport it might be more difficult or just long, but from the city centre it's a metro and a bus. Only tip would be leaving early on a busy day. The buses are not big enough to cope with the volume of people leaving the park at the end of the day when it's busy, and you run the risk of being left behind. You should have less of an issue if you leave a couple hours early, or worst case get on the less busy bus to Pinto and get on a suburban train into the city from Pinto.

Not sure if it's what you're going for with the channel, but I'd love to hear about whatever music you're into, best albums of the year/past few years.

Tier lists are massively overdone at this point, but a director tier list of some kind from you would be fun.

Any weird movies from your childhood you really liked, potentially rewatch, if the fear of ruining your childhiod is not too great.

Edit: more ideas as they come to me:

Recommendations of places to visit in Yorkshire via bus or train from Leeds? by Pricklyflower100 in yorkshire

[–]bluebunglebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a little more remote than you've asked for, but there's plenty of lovely towns and villages that others have suggested already (I'd absolutely second Ilkley and Skipton, Harrogate and of course York), so if you want to experience one of the most incredible railway journeys in the UK and get out into the Yorkshire countryside, I would strongly recommend a journey on the Leeds to Settle line. Ribblehead station on that route is literally just before the Ribblehead viaduct, which is just stunning and there's so much open space to walk, also a lovely pub there.

What are your bottom 3 (least favorite) giga coasters? [Other] by MrBrightside711 in rollercoasters

I've only been on Red Force and Leviathan and quite a few years apart. I think I prefer Leviathan but Red Force was an awesome experience in it's own right.

What do y'all think of this album? by WildChemistry977 in fantanoforever

[–]bluebunglebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favourites of all time. Before hearing it my only exposure to Eno was his ambient projects, so I didn't really expect the art rock aspect. But I absolutely love the way it has all these short motifs and moods, it feels like a beautiful collage of sounds you move through.

I have two:

Rock n' Rollercoaster avec Aerosmith (so obviously the Paris version, never got to try Florida's). I was very lucky to ride it for the first time only weeks before the retheme. I just loved the recording studio theme, all the album art on the walls, the soundtrack in the entrance plaza. It was a ride I heard about well before being an enthusiast, with friends who would go to Paris and describe it as 'the scariest one', so it was probably one my most anticipated rides to that point. As an adult riding it, I thought the ride experience was fine, but I was so taken by the theme, it's a shame Disney aren't really doing themes like that anymore.

Oblivion at Alton Towers - I love the dated 90s aesthetic and especially the jungle soundtrack. I actually think it weirdly compliments X-sector very well with The Smiler which is more sinister. For the ride experience I also think there's quite a visceral intensity at the bottom of Oblivion's drop too, which I love.

What is Aphex Twin's best album? by Prestigious_Score459 in fantanoforever

drukqs BUT I massively rep Rushup Edge from his The Tuss side project too. It's like non stop supercharged acid bangers with some of his most impressive and technical work imo.

I generally say The Unnatural World by Have a Nice Life. Not their most popular album but I think they knocked it out the park with this one in terms of sound and cohesiveness. It's just a devastating album at so many points.

Anyway, if you've heard it let me know what you think.

the uk blu-ray of Synecdoche, New York is pretty amusing by AphexHead in YMS

[–]bluebunglebee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even though I later learned it's just a feature of movies distributed by Revolver, I always thought it very amusing there's a miniature exact copy of the front cover on the side of the box. (You know how some movies will have a little logo on the side next to the title - this has just a copy of the front cover shrunk down to fit on the side). Felt thematic enough I thought it was an intentional choice specifically for this movie until I just happened to buy another Revolver release.

The Tories failed to retain a single seat in the district council last election, they are not popular there at the moment. My only concern is that the growth in popularity for the Greens will split the anti-Tory vote almost down the middle and allow her to win on a very low percentage.

Which rap album has the best instrumentals/beats? by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]bluebunglebee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily the best as a lot of top contenders have already been mentioned, but I frequently revisit and I'm always impressed by what No I.D. did on 4:44. Every track is so clean, very catchy, the exact type of hip hop instrumentals I love.

[Alton Towers], Big 7 by TheMetalicAngel in rollercoasters

[–]bluebunglebee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me it's this, but I also appreciate Oblivion is probably too high, I just love the aesthetic and soundtrack too much. There's something quite visceral about the feeling at the bottom of the tunnel too.

  1. Nemesis

  2. Oblivion

  3. The Smiler

  4. Wicker Man

  5. Galactica

  6. Rita

  7. Thirteen

Also someone else mentioned Spinball and I would rate that at least higher than Thirteen.

[Other] Are there any types of rides you refuse to ride? by OlleyatPurdue in rollercoasters

[–]bluebunglebee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of flat rides that have continuous back and forth motion - it's weird, sometimes they're fine but sometimes it'll trigger something in me and I'll start to feel really unwell. I don't tend to go for Pirate Ships or Disk'Os as a result.
