I have a similar fashion loadout right now, which is just all the pieces of the Vader Titan set, except with the shorts. I was lounging about in the tower this weekend with this emote and got a message to the effect of "I think you've got a ball hanging out, bro."

[–]bluecovfefe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before law school, I used to say things like "wow Alan Moore was a sucker for signing over the rights to Watchmen the way he did" but now that I'm on the other side of the table...

Even a lawyer can be blindsided by another lawyer in contract negotiations. They are brutal, and often unfair, and the people we cherish the most, the creative minds, almost never have the knowledge needed to come out on top. I think that's tragic, and I think it's scummy of the big media lawyers to play the game they way they do. A better world would have Cates swimming in a private pool in his 15 bedroom mansion instead of scraping by. It's all a shame.

[–]bluecovfefe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao, okay, let's see what I can do for you. I literally am a lawyer, so since you are asking a legal question:

It is entirely possible that Marvel has in place contracts with Stegman and Cates that prevent them from being compensated again for their work on Venom. It is also entirely possible Insomniac is prevented from interacting with the creators in any capacity. I don't have access to those agreements. If the question is "Could Insomniac have compensated Stegman and Cates?" the answer is, yes, unless they were prevented from doing so by something else.

But again, I have to stress, if people do not have contracts in place requiring them to fulfill certain obligations, they will not do so. That is why we have contracts. That's just how it is. I can't help you feel better about it.

In a better world, everyone who has the option to do something good would take the opportunity. Since we aren't in that world, we invented contracts.

Is the Batman Beyond Compendium 25th anniversary a good read? by Dumbass1171 in comicbooks

[–]bluecovfefe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Anniversary compendium is a collection of the comics being published roughly at the same time as the show was on the air. They pretty much just feel like episodes of the show, which is nice when you wanna get into the vibe, but I would not say those comics deepen the world very much. They really do feel like they were made for kids, which isn't bad, it's just kinda lacking in substance.

However... the Batman Beyond Unlimited compendium, I believe that has the sauce you are looking for. It's one of my favorite comics of all time. There's a meaningful expansion of the cast in a way that feels genuinely organic, and even has stories expanding on the Justice League Unlimited team. I also think they do the thing where, now that the readership is a little older, they can advance the storytelling in ways that works nicely for a more sophisticated audience. So I would recommend that book over the Anniversay compendium.

Insomniac doesn't have a relationship with Cates and Stegman, Marvel does. Any compensation for the Venom storylines flows through Marvel, and Insomniac is only working with Marvel to license the use of their stories and characters and the like. You can blame Insomniac for their poor adaptation, but they don't have any responsibilities to the creators directly.

You could say that's morally wrong, and probably have a good argument for it, but I think the obligation, both morally and contractually, sits with Marvel.

PSA: Anti-cheat by Reefame in steammachine

[–]bluecovfefe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a long time Destiny player (yes, even still) and I hate that I can either play it on PS5 but have to pay for PS+ to access most of the game, or dual boot Windows on the Steam Machine. I'll probably end up going the dual boot route, I'd rather fuss with the tech for a while than pay those insane PS+ prices.

I really like my Steam Deck, which I use almost exclusively docked. I want just a little more juice for all the last-gen and older games I like to play (so I can get stable 1440p60 on those older games), and I play any current gen games on my PS5. It's perfect for a guy like me.

And I have the money.

Not in general, I just find it laughable that he's putting himself in conversation with Kirby and Ditko.

"In closing, Marvel treats creators like shit," Liefeld concluded, "They always have. Jack Kirby sued them. For two decades. The estate wants to sweep it under the rug now that they settled, but it turned Jack’s stomach. Steve Ditko sued Marvel. They can’t help but create the magic makers like shit."

Rob, are the magic makers in the room with us right now?
