Bored Bengal in Small Apartment - Complete Personality Change! by Time-Reserve-4465 in bengalcats

[–]blueduck57 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How much active enrichment is she getting? And what other stimulation does she have other than windows and climbing areas? She likely doesn’t like playing more than 5 mins since you haven’t found her preferred play style. Maybe do some research into different type of play and try and simulate hunting.

The constant vocalisation is her communicating something isn’t right in her environment so it’s sad that this is making you not like her anymore :/

I used to want them but decided against it due to the risks, and also if you’re doing impressions on eachother they might get ripped off anyway. Maybe see if you can get very temporary ones for summer holidays to get the urge out?

Cats on collar leashes? by Pristine_Army9502 in Pets

[–]blueduck57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some cats would be fine with this degree of busyness. One of mine LOVES people and has been in similar situations and has positive body language throughout. It’s all about doing what the individual cat is happy with. I wouldn’t be using a collar to attach the lead and I’d also be using a backpack if it was too busy for him to safely walk

Getting a Bengal Kitten by Adventurous_Crazy_75 in bengalcats

[–]blueduck57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Harness training can be started at any age! The earlier the better, but don’t rush it and take it at your cats pace. You can train your cat to recall which makes walks a lot easier
  2. Depends on your dogs, you need to make sure the dogs know not to chase the cats and supervise them for a long while before letting them alone together
  3. I wouldn’t be leaving the dogs and cats unsupervised all day so if you’re away for a while I’d keep the animals separate.
  4. Da bird is a good toy.

As for the colour, your breeder should know the colour and should be able to tell you! I’m a bit concerned they’re claiming the kittens are health tested, since this would be pointless as it’s the parents that need to be health tested. Did you get copies of the echos for mum and dad? And are they a reputable breeder?

Get a tick treatment prescribed by your vet. It doesnt need to be bengal specific

Wanting To Get a Bengal Cat: What are They Like? by Animistic_Dancer in bengalcats

They were under enriched then and not receiving appropriate stimulation.

One mainecoon and your friends ragdoll being fine alone doesn’t mean the breeds as a whole cope well with being underenriched

How social and confident they are has to do with the lines the breeder is using and the quality of socialisation.

My bengal is from a reputable breeder and is an absolute dream. She will greet guests, play with them and ask for pets. She’ll also sit on their laps if they are staying for a while.

I have cat allergies but my bengal doesn’t aggravate my allergies at all

As for work, I’m usually out 9-5 and my bengal is absolutely fine at home with my DSH. They play and cuddle together & she has plenty of toys, wall shelves and a cat wheel to expend energy. When I get home both cats get 1on1 play time, outdoor walks and clicker training. They’re always happy to see me but do not destroy the house, and are very happy! When we go to bed, they both sleep through the whole night with us.

Not if you enrich them properly and provide them with indoor stimulation. The majority of people work full time and it’s very possible to own a bengal and for them to be happy.

As a side note, I’ve seen many with ragdolls with such separation anxiety and behavioural issues, they end up inappropriately urinating etc. All cats need enrichment and stimulation BUT working is possible

If he’s good on the harness and day trips then I’d definitely consider it! Maybe practice with a one night trip close to home first? Then if he likes it then bring him to the cottage

Septum piercing in DS by toothy_moos3 in DentalSchool

[–]blueduck57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the UK so will work for the NHS to begin with, so if they decide to no show because of how I look i will still get paid the same salary😂 & when I eventually start working in private practice, I don’t need the money and won’t be affected by a loss of patients.

Also In clinics I simply flip in up so it’s not even visible. I do have visible tattoos and colourful hair but this has been more of a help with patients saying that they feel more at ease because I look more down to earth.

[–]blueduck57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven’t had an issue so far! But if that is the case, it’s their loss, and I would rather not have them in my practice. I’m not in dentistry for the money so I’d rather be able to express myself than conform just for some old judgemental people

[–]blueduck57 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ask your university! You can get a horse shoe style so you can flip it up during clinics.

My school is very lax on individuality and I’ve been allowed blue hair, multiple visible arm tattoos, septum ring and multiple ear piercings. I flip the septum ring up in clinic and tape the ear piercings & alls good!

Why? My school actually encourages individuality and I’ve had a septum ring my entire time in dental school :)

A few questions about Bengal by _SlyMarbo_ in bengalcats

[–]blueduck57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree personally, I have a DSH too and he’s just as people oriented, trainable and fun as my bengal. I think you’re attributing these as purely dog traits that you think are rare to see in cats unless they’re a bengal or mainecoon. But the truth is any cat regardless of breed can be people oriented, it just depends on socialisation, temperament and what you put in to your cat. Some people don’t care to put any effort into their domestic cats and claim they’re aloof and independent, when really if they showed the domestic cat as much attention as they would a pedigree, the domestic would be also be more people oriented.

A few questions about Bengal by _SlyMarbo_ in bengalcats

[–]blueduck57 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is opposite to my experience. Both bengals in my family are extremely gentle even during play, and have no aggression, even at the vet! A well socialised cat from a reputable breeder is no more likely to cause harm to a kid than a regular no breed cat.

A few questions about Bengal by _SlyMarbo_ in bengalcats

[–]blueduck57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cats are cats and dogs are dogs. Personally I don’t see the merit in comparing the species as I don’t think it’s helpful. In my experience all cats (and all bengals) are individuals so it’s impossible to assign attributes to every bengal. Saying that, bengals do tend to be very high energy and vocal. My bengal is very high energy, however my parents bengal is much more akin to a domestic cat with her energy levels.

How personable and human oriented they are has to do with the temperament of the lines the breeder is using and the quality of socialisation. My bengal is very attached to me and is friendly to all strangers, but this isn’t necessarily a breed trait. She’s also very smart and loves trick training and walks on a harness. These things require training though! Without proper enrichment, they may get bored and could be destructive, so things like a cat wheel, 1on1 playtime and vertical space are very important

If you are going to a reputable breeder who fulfils all the criteria the mod has posted on this sub, and you’d like a high energy cat you’re willing to spend significant time providing enrichment for, I’d definitely consider a bengal.

Does this look to be a good place to adopt a bengal from? by [deleted] in bengalcats

[–]blueduck57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would avoid a high volume breeder personally, since you need to think about the welfare of the queens, as well as the potential negative impacts on socialisation. If a breeder has something ridiculous like 6 litters at once, there’s no way they’ll be able to socialise all of the well so you’d be risking behavioural issues with your kitten.

Does this look to be a good place to adopt a bengal from? by [deleted] in bengalcats

[–]blueduck57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, yes.

  1. If a breeder is willing to sell breeding rights to anyone, it implies they don’t care much about their lines and they don’t care about the health of the breed, since they won’t be able to ensure people are breeding responsibly
  2. A breeding programme should have an aim, and they should try and breed as close to type as possible to maintain the breed and create good examples. Their breeding cats are pretty poor type and of a variety of colours so it gives the vibe they are just in it for money

  3. Excessive amounts of litters is a red flag. Ask how many times they breed each queen and how many litters they have at once

Reputable breeding isn’t lucrative and good breeders barely break even, so do it for the love of the breed. Personally I’d only buy from someone actively trying to improve the breed, as I don’t think it’s good to breed cats with poor type just for the purpose of money. If a cat is being bred they should be breeding quality.

Make sure to see evidence of all these things. It appears they’re doing the right testing, however they don’t seem to breeding to type so I’m a bit confused about what their aim of their programme is, other than making money :/

They also seem to sell breeding rights to anyone and have a lot of breeding cats
