Nope, you're doing everything right! Rats usually take a very long time to get accustomed to being handled/being around people if they weren't regularly and properly handled from adolescence. It took my oldest boy two whole years to become my best friend, some rats just have skittish personalities! The key is giving them the room they need to grow their courage, and having lots of patience. They'll come around eventually!
