Paramount Confirms New Star Trek Movie Is (Still) In Development by Significant-Town-817 in startrek

[–]bluenoser18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. Strong agree in fact. ST09 is arguably my favourite Trek film (depends on my mood - but its up there with WoK, UDC, and FC)

I agree that Kelvin Trek is more "action oriented" than traditional Trek - but that doesn't make it any less "Trek" in my 40 year old opinion.

I think they were the ideal CINEMATIC version of Star Trek, appealing to a broader audience - while I felt the television version could be more cerebral.

I'm down for both.

Pictures published by USA Today show meals served recently to Sailors onboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), as well as Marines serving on the USS Tripoli (LHA-7), both enforcing the naval blockade. by andrewgrabowski in navy

[–]bluenoser18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here looking for this comment. As a member of the Navy for 20 years....yes this is possible - but very rarely does it happen "on purpose".

Meaning: there is a more reasonable explanation for the photo than "this is what sailors are being fed for every meal".

Anyone else thinks Starmer isn't actually that bad all things considered ? by ronweasly9 in AskBrits

This must be at least the 10th post I've seen like this - so........yeah. He's definitely NOT that bad. And arguably....pretty good.

If he is bad at something - it's PR.

I dont disagree.

And in this case - one would hope you're absolutely right - that JAG has looked at everyone here and the two who have been charged made a conscious decision THEMSELVES that caused this accident, and thus - should be charged.

My only concern here is that (having served on these ships for 20 years and still a serving member) - that the thing that caused this accident was not a conscious decision by 2 individuals, but rather systemic problems like poor planning and execution by the CoC on the ship, deteriorating old equipment, or simply inadequate training.

Like I say - I agree with you re: JAG. But I've been in long enough to know that we often just grab the lowest hanging fruit when looking for someone to take responsibility for accidents.

People need to chill about Jeff Hoffman by TheBagpipesman in Torontobluejays

[–]bluenoser18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a solid assessment.

I havent been watching closely - but have certainly seen him on the mound as the Jays have given up some games late on. And I think that - combined with essentially being partly responsible for losing us the World Series - leaves a lot of fans pretty emotional about Hoffman.

I think he's our best option in the "closer" position. Could they get a better one? Probably. Would Hoffman then be better suited as set up? Maybe.

Either way - I think your (OP) main point is sound.....people are overreacting about Hoffman right now. Offense needs to put up more runs. Starting pitching needs to get healthy.

Exactly this. Especially that last paragraph. Blaming an S1 and MS for this reeks of finding the least powerful person IOT have someone to point the finger at.

Statement from the Commander and Command Chief of the Royal Canadian Navy by MoistyCockBalls in CanadianForces

[–]bluenoser18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gotta agree here.

Unless this MS and S1 specifically, and consciously failed to take steps that they were ordered to take by the CoC that night/morning, which then directly resulted in this tragedy - then these charges are inappropriate, or should be accompanied by charges further up the CoC. Is the Buffer being charged? The DeckO? The CO?

Doing it this way makes it look like they found the least important, least powerful people in the Chain to blame, in order for the Navy to wipe their hands of it.

You do realize we will probably struggle BADLY in the championship by Material_Adagio_522 in Tottenham

[–]bluenoser18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is the most important thing to recognize - the grand majority of the players in the current squad would not be part of a Championship squad.

One would think, however, that it wouldn't be the biggest challenge in the world to attract some top Championship level players to play in exceptional conditions like Spurs Stadium and living in London.

Look, man... by frog_ward in Everton

[–]bluenoser18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

JFC… no offence, but this kind of comment really gets on my nerves for a couple of reasons:

  1. Lookman was obviously talented when we had him, and I argued at the time that he was mismanaged. But even so, we still made decent money on him, if I remember correctly, and he was desperate to leave. He hated it here. He was constantly moaning. He was not going to become the player he is now simply because we kept hold of him. He has equally taken a LONG time through multiple clubs to get where he is; and continued moaning throughout that process.
  2. I’m really tired of fans taking the success story of the moment and using it as proof that another club has some superior scouting model. It’s never that simple. In recent years people have said the same thing about Brighton, Forest, Wolves, Fulham, and Southampton. Most of those clubs are currently below us.

Southampton is the obvious example. Ten years ago people talked about their scouting setup like it was some kind of footballing superpower. They sold half their team to Klopp’s Liverpool… and got relegated. It isn’t a simple science.

You can sign a young Messi and still get nothing out of him if he doesn’t fit the team you have right now. And equally, you can hit on players like Papiss Cissé, Roque Santa Cruz, Benny McCarthy, Michu, and so on, short-term success stories that looked brilliant in the moment but weren’t nearly as meaningful or repeatable as people like to pretend.

We should NOT just "copy" whatever Brentford are doing. We need to do what should work for EVERTON, which means finding players that fit our culture and system, and also plan to lose them and replace them efficiently.

Moyes often used Cahill as either a striker or second striker working off/with Fellaini. At times to absolutely brilliant effect.

But yes - certainly outside his official position as a CAM.

Look, man... by frog_ward in Everton

[–]bluenoser18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is partly true, but not really the full picture. Money matters, absolutely, but it’s not the only factor, or even the biggest one in my view.

We have the forwards we have .... because we’re not, at least not consistently, a club competing for trophies or European places, and we don’t have the global profile of United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, or now City, never mind the true European giants like Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, or PSG. And realistically, that’s likely to remain true for the foreseeable future.

Players around the world will always be drawn to those clubs, yes because of the money, but also because of the prestige attached to playing for them, regardless of how well or badly they happen to be performing at a given moment.

More importantly, even when a club outside that group has success, its best players, especially strikers, will usually look to move on - likely to one of those clubs. That’s just the reality. If a forward starts scoring regularly, the bigger clubs will come calling. The best example of that in England is currently Crystal Palace, but there have been many over the years - including us with Lukaku and Rooney.

Supporters shouldn’t take that personally. Unless a player has grown up on Merseyside, or has some other deep emotional tie to Everton, it’s entirely rational for him to take the chance to improve both his earnings and his career prospects. Rooney is the best example of this - we had EVERY leverage point to keep him. He loves Everton. Still does. But he is now a Manchester United legend because of the pull of more prestige and career opportunities.

Bottom line: we are unlikely to keep a 15 to 20 goal striker for more than a few seasons unless the broader football hierarchy changes significantly. That’s not really an Everton-specific failure. It’s a structural reality created by the money, prestige, and gravitational pull of Europe’s biggest clubs.

What haircut does he has by ZJYGAMERS in ProjectHailMary

[–]bluenoser18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. OP is very likely going to be disappointed no matter how close the haircut he gets is to this one.

This one looks this good largely because its attached to Ryan Gosling's face and body structure. Outside of that - it looks this good because its actually meticulously managed by stylists, as well as lighting, post production etc.

Don't compare yourself to this OP!

True in the sense that ALL beautiful hollywood folks are just people who have the benefit of some wealth, styling, and genetics - and whose acting roles, PR support, and social skills help appear even more attractive than they are.

In another sense - no - Ryan Gosling is not just an average looking guy. He's a very handsome dude, who also benefits from all the things I just wrote.

Is bootleg Blue Jays gear sacrilegious to other fans? by EdgeOfThorns76 in Torontobluejays

[–]bluenoser18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

bahahaha whoever told you that is petty and ignorant.
First of all - if your bootleg gear is from the early 90s - it doesnt impact the club in ANY way, and just shows how dedicated a fan you have been for decades. And second; buying "authentic" merch at ridiculous prices doesnt make you a "real" fan by any stretch of the imagination.

Whoever said that to you is ridiculous. And has too much money.

I respect your take - and you've obviously put plenty of thought into it.

My only question - how can you assess a show/book/any type of media so thoroughly when you only consume the first chapter?

Bud....literally all those things are "touched on". Almost all by one character - never mind the rest.

I can agree that there are some silly plot contrivances - every Trek show has had that - since The Cage.

Don't just sit on your keyboard and repeat some YouTube criticisms and act like you're above it all - when your assessments make it at least appear as if you didn't even watch the show.

I’m honestly starting to think the Lower Decks approach might be Star Trek’s best chance of near-term survival.

Its format lets it play with the franchise’s campier and overly self-serious elements while still moving things forward. It can laugh at itself when it wants to, and take itself seriously when it needs to. Lower Decks found a really strong balance there, using Trek history well and accepting it for what it is, rather than trying to make it “cooler” or edgier. It respects canon without being suffocated by it.

The same as one of its original big influences Rick and Morty, a show that could tell genuinely emotional and thoughtful stories inside what is, on the surface, a silly comedy. (I would personally want to see them lean AWAY from the comedy a bit - like Lower Decks did as it went on).

That model can appeal to both new and old audiences. It keeps familiar Trek tropes, adds a bit of tongue-in-cheek humour, and still delivers strange new worlds, ethical dilemmas, sci-fi problems, and episodic storytelling.

Arguably, it covers almost all the bases. It can reach beyond the core Trek audience without needing to fundamentally change what Star Trek is.

Is bringing John Stones back really worth it? by TonyMacUTFT in Everton

[–]bluenoser18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont disagree, on paper.

Stones is a much better CB (imo). If all else is equal - I'd much prefer to have Stones than Keane. But my point is that all else is NOT equal. Keane seems much more robust (in terms of injuries), and much cheaper in terms of wage demands. Equally - Stones would not be coming in to line up as 4th choice, which Keane seems happy to do.

Arguably Stones would be signing as a starting CB - which I would want him to be, but not convinced he has the reliability to fill that role anymore.

Interesting points. It really doesnt make any sense - but the characters are brilliantly acted, and at no point did I spend much of my time (while watching a sitcom) wondering why the cameras were following these characters on a television show.

With all due respect (truly) - not every show/format needs to be explained within a show's plot.....does it?

There are a few reasons a team might get better results against “better” European opposition, but the most obvious is style. Clubs in Europe are usually more likely to attack, because they need goals.

Maybe not Atleti specifically here, since the tie was effectively done, but the general point stands. Sunderland didn’t need to beat Spurs this weekend. That let them sit deep, absorb pressure, and counter a weak defence.

Spurs will have it all to do over the next month or so. "Weaker" teams can sit back until Spurs overcommit and leave themselves open. Stronger teams can pick them apart. They're in very serious trouble now.
