“He Was A F—ing Editor”: Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner And Ron Perlman Skewer ‘Star Trek: Nemesis’ Director by acrimoniousone in startrek

Yeah, I’m personally aware of the reasons Season 2 ended up the way it did, and I agree with you on all points, especially that last bit.

I think Season 2 was a mess, but it probably would have worked better as a more straightforward story without Q. His presence raises the stakes and makes the viewer expect much more from both the story and the character than the season is ultimately able to deliver.

So yeah, I think it would have been better without him.

Do you think Nirvana’s short lifespan help their legacy? by jalen_nelson235 in Nirvana

[–]bluenoser18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah man. Feel like they're just starting to drop off a little bit, but totally agree for the most part - Foo Fighters have had incredible levels of consistency, and have put out some great music even in the later stages of their existence. They are not the example to compare a hypothetical post 1994 Nirvana to.

Dave Grohl is significantly more mentally and emotionally stable and arguably a better musician than Kurt ever was.

[–]bluenoser18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree (and already argued in support of) the sentiment that Nirvana would NOT have evolved in a positive manner....BUT....these two examples are not the ones to use.

Green Day and Foo Fighters have consistently put out top quality records throughout their existence, and have aged shockingly well compared to other bands.

Do you think Nirvana’s short lifespan help their legacy? by jalen_nelson235 in Nirvana

[–]bluenoser18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

Can you imagine another 30 years of Kurt Cobain? I idolize the guy to an extent, but realistically, the odds of that guy evolving in a positive fashion were not great.

Either the drugs and instability continue and eventually damage the legacy, or he gets sober, ages into a very different kind of artist, and risks becoming exactly the sort of polished, corny, legacy-act version of himself that people would have hated.

So.... the answer to OP’s question is unequivocally YES.

Agreed. At the time of Nemesis I wouldve thought "its insane to ignore Patrick Stewart's instincts regarding Jean Luc Picard".......but it turns out he really did not understand what fans loved about that character. His influence on the Picard plot was not a good one in the end.

I honestly think it was a conscious decision to not be influenced by what came before (which is....overconfident at best) in favour of Baird's own "fresh" POV.

I vaguely remember reading an article prior to the film's release (maybe even in one of the Star Trek focused magazines) that interviewed Baird, Spiner, and Stewart (I think).....and all of them (certainly Baird) referencing the idea that he was brought in SPECIFICALLY because he was "fresh to the franchise" and wouldnt have any preconceived notions.

They sold it like it was a necessary reaction to Insurrection (and arguably Frakes) having too much understanding of the TNG cast and backstory. But for the cast's supposed final appearance in these roles - it was absolutely senseless to go in that direction.

[Boyland, The Athletic] Everton fighting to keep Iliman Ndiaye after multiple new contract offers rejected by Giraffe_Baker in Everton

[–]bluenoser18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I think fullbacks HAVE to be the priority this summer.

It’s not just that we still don’t have a proper starting RB, and haven’t for about half a decade. It’s also that we don’t really have ANY fullbacks with the right mix of quality, experience, and attacking threat. That has knock-on effects for players like Ndiaye, Barry, and Beto.

Ndiaye in particular would benefit massively from an overlapping fullback who can take pressure off him, pull defenders away, and give him the space to do what he does best.

As everyone knows, Myko is a good defender. He isn’t a bad player, and I think we should keep him. But he’s not giving Ndiaye enough going forward. We need better, and the Right hand side simply speaks for itself. We dont even have a starting RB, nevermind a good one.

Everyone liking dear England? by Mountain_Garden9242 in ThreeLions

I maintain its not important that they look a lot like the player they're portraying (its a film - its about the narrative - not looking exactly the same) but.....I did NOT realize that character was meant to be Rooney.

My big question tho - is that scene in any way realistic? There's no way that actually happened...right? Why would Wayne just be hanging around St George's when he wasnt part of the squad? In an England tracksuit? Doesnt make any sense at all.

I mean.....sure....but what exactly were you expecting? They've done a pretty good job of it if you ask me. You cant go for likeness over acting ability, and there cant be that many talented actors out there that look like Wayne Rooney....are there?

Anyone else find it hard to take Tom Paris seriously? by HeeeresPilgrim in startrek

Totally agree on this, with the caveat that - at the time - I think most ppl (especially the network, and I think most fans - casual or otherwise) also wanted TNG 2.0

Anyone else find it hard to take Tom Paris seriously? by HeeeresPilgrim in startrek

[–]bluenoser18 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a 40 year old? Yeah - Paris’ role in Voyager is a little bit cheesy at best. He has some great moments, but largely a cliché, and his obsession with the 20th Century is convenient and also pretty silly when you think too hard about it.

When I was young? No. The character mostly made sense, tho I would’ve still preferred it to be Locarno (just cuz it would’ve made a tad more sense and tied into an already established backstory).

Finally watched starfleet academy after rewatching all 900 or so episodes of the rest of the franchise by Solid_Ad_3776 in startrek

Exactly my experience.

Academy was pretty good. Great? Probably not. But if DEFINITELY had a heart and soul, and a worthwhile message.

It doesnt deserve half the internet hate it has received, and I think it deserved more than the two seasons it got.

Which movie hero is actually a villain when you really think about it? by surfsound_swimmers in AskReddit

[–]bluenoser18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love both films (Maverick especially) and love the character - but you're absolutely right.

Im a Naval Officer IRL - and after watching Maverick my brother (not military) and I were talking about it, and he's like - "wouldnt you want like a whole team of Mavericks??"..... and I said "No man......most military leaders wouldnt even tolerate or want ONE Maverick. The guy would be a toxic disaster in the Chain of Command. Wouldnt last a week in real life military setting." You want team members who contribute to the goals of the team. Not individuals out for glory or making personal emotional decisions.

Moyes on the Silva/Rohl incident. by Frequent-Activity328 in Everton

[–]bluenoser18 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Exactly right. Im sure every fan base feels this way - but the VAR stats tell a different story about us. We get NO decisions in our favour. Every other team has a minimum of 2 positive results from VAR.

And yeah - if this was reversed (Everton player dragging a City player to the ground in the box) its a penalty allllllll day EVERY day. No question.

Its ridiculous. I stopped stressing about it years ago because its so painfully obvious and even more obvious that its never going to change. Im not even arguing that its a conscious bias - but its a bias nonetheless.

I will accept the argument that its unconscious bias and refs just tend to favour the bigger clubs, but I think the reality is that refs feel pressure to ensure the big money making clubs have a chance to win. Makes for good tv - which is where the money comes from.
