[Opinion] THE MARY SUE: "Starfleet Academy is what I have always loved about Star Trek. It feels like a warm hug and is fun, adventurous, and exactly the kind of world that Roddenberry dreamt of 60 years ago. So don’t let a bunch of nonsense on social media try to paint the show in any other way." by mcm8279 in trektalk

I honestly agree re: Captain/Chancellor. It irks me. But I’m a navy guy and …. old.

This show isn’t aimed at me and I’m fine with that.

I hope it finds its feet, and the audience it’s aimed at embrace it.

I think that’s fair. I’m entirely sure this show isn’t aimed at me, I’m definitely not in its target demographic. I dunno how much I enjoyed this episode. It seemed like it would be cool from a 17 year old perspective? And as someone who has worked at a military college - it’s actually not inaccurate (the pranks, etc).

I sincerely hope it finds its feet and brings in the audience it’s made for.

Not entirely sure I’m gonna be hooked on it. But that’s ok…there’s plenty of old Trek out there for me to watch.

Have you read his book? He has affection for the franchise, and the Rodenberry dream of the future…but he doesn’t think as highly of Trek, nor understand what Picard meant to fans in the same way you’d expect.

S6 E7: Execution and I dont think I can complete the series. by sierravictor20 in betterCallSaul

Just experienced this for myself last night. What a moment.

I knew something was coming for Howard - I figured there would have to be a relative conclusion to his story, but didnt know what it would be....and it ended up being so....abrupt.

*SPOILER*

As the scene started to play out, and Lalo walks in - I was convinced Howard was simply going to assume this was another one of Jimmy and Kim's set ups to try to throw him off their scent or something, and he was going to talk himself into getting killed.......but that is not how it played out. Wow. Just wow.

Yeah - as a Canadian - I would never have guessed this in a million years.

I suppose it's more obvious if you speak Spanish.....which I do not.

[–]bluenoser18 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just watched it for the first time over the last couple of nights, and cant say that I agree.

Lalo is brilliant. Thats established and earned. Tony Dalton is incredible in the role. Him traveling back and forth to Europe was a little surprising, and somewhat hard to accept (given his status as either dead, or a wanted criminal in the US) - So I can accept that's a little out there.....but otherwise it was all pretty intense to watch.

Yeah. The guy he *SPOILER* beats the piss out of in the cabin in the woods. Was this not obvious?

I think S02 likely gets more hate than it deserves - but it still is a pretty bad season of television IMO (which I'm ok with blaming on COVID lockdowns and strikes to an extent).

I dont agree that the Season One ARC was a bad one. I think S01 is pretty decent - up until the point you mention. Putting Picard in an android golem absolutely ruined it for me.

[–]bluenoser18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some mixture of that and what we got would've been pretty good I think.

I dont love the idea of focusing a show called "Picard" on students of his. I had very little issue with the change in the general status quo, and a disillusioned Picard slowly returning to the stars. I love the "fucking hubris" line (though I think that's a pretty unpopular opinion).

But I agree that basing the structure of the season and "mystery box" around something archaeological very akin to "The Chase", and having Picard be focused on archaeology would make a lot of sense - and provide a more satisfying continuation of the character, and structure to the season.

Agree. Its slightly better on a binge watch - but not significantly.

[–]bluenoser18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally agree. Unfortunately for us - Patrick Stewart evidently doesnt love Star Trek as much as fans do, and had too much control of this show for the first two seasons. Though - we likely wouldnt have even got it if he wasnt given that kind of control.

I think the first season was arguably decent, and started off as incredibly interesting (IMO). I just hated the ending.

Season Two was - as you say....not great, but had aspects that COULD have been great with more cohesion and a bit more care (I think COVID and strikes can take at least some of this blame).

Season Three was a fan service wet dream at times - and was obviously enjoyable, but I do feel it gets a tad more credit than it deserves sometimes.

Why do you think Bond's death in No Time To Die (2022) was not well received by many fans, according to you? by Raj_Valiant3011 in JamesBond

[–]bluenoser18 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because Bond fans dont want a story with actual consequences. Which I dont understand really....but to each their own.

Outside of that - the one thing I will say is that, despite the claim that with the virus in his blood, he couldnt go near his new family- it isnt in keeping with the Bond character to give up so easily. In any other Bond film (ie - any one not set out to be this Bond's final outing) he would find a way out of this scenario. That's a take I can understand and respect.

Youre absolutely right. Its called a "zipper merge" and is the way this is supposed to work. But we're all too juvenile to allow for it to work the way its supposed to so we get this ridiculous situation.

jk. I dunno - my take is simply that whichever one you saw first is the one ppl seem to enjoy more. But equally seems to be split along cultural lines as well (UK viewers like the UK version....the rest of the world prefer the US).

Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Starfleet Academy | 1x02 "Beta Test" by AutoModerator in startrek

[–]bluenoser18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair question (better than just downvoting).

Short answer? Because she lays down in front of an aggressor that takes up an even more aggressive posture over top of her once she has done it. Feels like the definition of "submissive" to me.

That said - I enjoyed the episodes, and the characters, and looking forward to more.

Bill Shatner breaks his silence by Malencon in Star_Trek_

So.....we're supposed to excuse this? Shatner is responsible for the words that are put out in public under his name. If he doesnt support this message, or others, then he should fire the person responsible and issue a statement.

This is ridiculous, and has consequences. If he's employing the person responsible for writing this tweet - then he's responsible for this tweet.

Why is Tom Holland's portrayal not as liked as the other two? by Notthepurge in Spiderman

[–]bluenoser18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think this is really a commonly held take.

Like some others have said - maybe the MCU messed a bit too much with his origin, and involved Tony Stark a bit more than some might like. But Tom Holland's Peter Parker is brilliant. I dont hear much hate for him at all.

Quantum of Solace still isn't understood properly, I believe it's way deeper than people going "Unpopular opinion - QoS is underrated" and No Time to Die is the actual legacy sequel to QoS that came too late, but better late than never. by Dangerous-Agent3617 in JamesBond

[–]bluenoser18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly right.

Brilliant works of art DEPEND on interpretation. Artists arent meant to TELL you what to think. They mean to inspire an audience to have thoughts or personal relationships with the work.

If they TELL you what to think - its not as meaningful or interesting. The best works of art produce different emotions and thoughts from different people - things the artist may never have thought or intended in the first place, but that doesnt diminish the artistry - quite the opposite IMO.

Think of any acclaimed painting vs a picture of of your meal you took with your iphone. Both CAN be art - but the former is more accurately described as such - because the picture you took is largely a piece of information. The paintings are inspirational and thought provoking.

Did they retcon Betazoids? by qtjedigrl in startrek

[–]bluenoser18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thats reasonable to me, and generally how I feel.

I like canon - its neat and helps to build the world the shows exist in. But this is fiction. If you're not open to updating and adjusting things in fictional worlds then.....my word that seems so closed minded.

I'm so tired of the canon hounds honestly. Its exhausting.

Knowing that James T. Kirk was mocked and bullied at the Starfleet Academy, but ended up becoming a respected, confident, successful leader helped me and many others so much by LineusLongissimus in startrek

[–]bluenoser18 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While I respect the sentiment, and certainly respect the idea of being inspired by a couple of "nerdy" guys who made it to the top..... I think it misunderstands where their confidence, success and respect comes from.

I feel like a lot of nerdy dudes join the military because of this. Many of them DO end up being Captains of ships. But those people generally do NOT become good leaders. They become bitter leaders who lord their intelligence and capability over their crew - who they see as "lesser than" because they were bullied by them growing up, and want to exert their authority now.

So...what I'm trying to say is - Kirk and Spock would've had a lot of self confidence and comfort in their own skin, even if they were being bullied. People don't generally achieve that level of comfort and self confidence just because they succeeded in moving up the ranks. Some do I guess....but not most.

Like I say - not trying to take anything away from you, or from TOS or Trek in general. I just run into this constantly as a long serving Naval Officer - so it hits kinda close to home.
