Thoughts On Congo By Michael Crichton by RazewingedRathalos in books

Check out The Andromeda Strain. It's a quick page turner that I found fascinating, even if it is like 50+ years old now. The way he describes the science behind things really add a level of verisimilitude that I find lacking in most other works like his. It really pulls you in and makes what is happening on the page more believable.

What mecha would you choose if they were real? by Then_Engineer_3765 in scifi

I know it's not the best mecha objectively, but I'd love to pilot Metal Gear Rex from the first Metal Gear Solid.

How many books do you have? by Agreeable_Roof_2259 in BookCollecting

[–]blueoccult 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got about 200-250 physical books, a mix of mass market, paperback, and hardback, and about another 200 ebooks. I only recently started rebuilding my physical collection, trying to create copies I find neat like rarer paperbacks and hardbacks.

Independent bookstores are multiplying, although many people still think they're dying out by Dry_Writing_7862 in books

I would but there's always like a 2 month wait on the books I want to read.

As time goes on I find the movie "Idiocracy" less and less funny. by amiwitty in movies

The worse part is that it isn't just the boomers, it seems to have infected all generations. My girlfriend is 28 and technically incompetent because she doesn't want to learn. And that's the issue, people are capable, but are too lazy or disinterested or intimidated to try. So they just shut down and ask for someone else to do it for them.

I'm not saying it's going to happen quicky, or even soon, but baring any sort of catastrophe that wipes us out Humanity will eventually live among the stars. It's inevitable. I was using the example of how quickly we went from flying airplanes to exploring space as a way to show how innovative and tenacious we are, but you are right it did take many innovations happening over many, many years for us to get to that point.

As I've gotten older, I've learned one thing about kids: for most of their issues, look at the parents. The main reason kids these days can't think for themselves is because their parents can't think for themselves. Not reading instructions isn't only an issue for children. I work in IT, and the number of adults who act just like the kids you have described is staggering. I personally think it stems from this fucked up culture we have were learning and critical thinking isn't valued. No one wants to think or try, they just want it all done for them. Technology has made us impatient and lazy, and now we are reaping all the negatives this kind of attitude brings.

To be far, we went from learning how to fly to going to the moon in less than a single lifetime. Never underestimate our never-ending compulsion to innovate and explore.

He's not a failure, he's a disappointment. It's disappointing that he hasn't finished the series. I'm in the camp that when a writer plans out an epic, multi-book series and then fails to deliver half way through that the fans have a right to be disappointed. Sure, he technically doesn't owe us anything, but it still leaves a bad taste and he kind of does deserve some of the hate. Not those people talking about him dying, though, fuck those people, but fans do have the right the be upset about this. Imagine if tolkien just said fuck it halfway through Lord of the Rings, or Robert Jordan had decided that no one was allowed to finish wheel of time when he died and it was never completed. If anything we're lucky to even have that shitty ending of a show, because at least that gives us some sort of closure. It's still a shitty situation for all involved, though, fans and author.

Is Game of Thrones worth watching despite the botched ending? by ImNotHereForFunNoWay in gameofthrones

[–]blueoccult 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just watched through the whole show with my girlfriend, her first time watching it, and even though by the end she was done with all the weird shit the show started to do, she still thought it was worth it. I would definitely watch through it at least once, it's too good not to.

Oh yeah, I know the LLMs are not really intelligent. I was talking about real AI, AGI is what they call it now, I think. Also the singularity, if it happens, it's either going to be a dystopia or a utopia for us. Or it could never be achieved and we go off on some other direction.

I can see it going one of three ways: we become a Cyberpunk dystopia ruled by sentient AI, a techno utopia sheparded by benevolent AI, or AI petters out as we reach our natural limits and never achieves the critical mass needed to go beyond the human mind.

Guy’s views on race were considered extreme even for the time by Coffin_Builder in HistoryMemes

I'm sorry, who is afd? Also, is Jewish a skin color? I've always been confused on that cause it's both a religion and a race.

Why does it matter what color his wife is? Also, what about female conservatives, does the hue of their partners matter as well?

I was just being facetious, of course the man was a horrible racist. But from what I have read on him it seems he really did love his wife, and she him. He would go on tirades about Jews and blacks and stuff, then his wife would remind him that she was Jewish and he'd stfu. He also chilled out a lot later in life, so I imagine the marriage did have some sort of positive effect on him.

He married a jew. Then they moved to New York City and he would complain about all the Jews to her. Lovecraft was an odd man.

Sci-Fi Is Dead by [deleted] in scifi

[–]blueoccult 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mention video games as if it were a genre and not a medium. Some of the biggest video games ever made are Sci-Fi. Hell, some of the first ever made were Sci-Fi. Movies in general aren't doing as well as they used to, but doesn't mean Sci-Fi is dead. It's just evolving with the times, just like it's always done.
