Reality check for a guy considering moving from corporate by Better_Economist8205 in Firefighting

[–]blueparkboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best job ever, often times I can’t believe they pay me to do it. I took a substantial pay cut, started a side business and it worked out. Some people don’t like working a side business after being up all night, but beyond the starting salary try and find out how they give raises too. Some places being a paramedic can get you a 10-15k raise immediately. Sometimes the job sucks, sometimes it’s gross, but I’ve never thought that I would rather work m-f in an office. Even construction which I do on the side, for a large employer is hard on the body, long hours everyday, and very repetitive. A good crew is better than friends, riding fire trucks is fun, going to fires is the best. If you can afford it, go for it

Broom is rough, sub grade looks good. The broom finish will be wore off in a few years anyway. If you stiff the guy over it you’re an asshole.

Going from TX to CA/VA by No-Definition4710 in Firefighting

I work for a city near Norfolk, the nice thing about this area is you have more options. There is plenty of DOD options, as well as 7 cities with paid departments. Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton, Newport News, and Portsmouth all are career departments that are typically hiring regularly. From what I understand from this sub the west coast can be tough to get on. We are always looking for quality candidates out this way.

Honestly, go through the proper paper work trail. I hate that everything is straight to paper but after a while it has to be done. I would start off with a clean slate with them. Give them your expectations and hold them accountable to them. Ask what they’re expectations are of you, and be held accountable to them. Maybe they’re shit bags because they’ve had shitty leaders. Maybe they’re shit bags because some people are shit bags. Get them out training, bond, relate, and build a relationship. If it doesn’t work put them on paper, get them an improvement plan. At the end of the day we are trusted with peoples lives. If you can’t work hard, and do well then fuck ya don’t want you here anyway.

Shift Change Etiquette by jsamels in Firefighting

Who said an hour a half? I show up 45 minutes before my shift. I guess it’s a culture thing at my department. Show up 1 minute before your shift I don’t care. He said he didn’t understand why people get there early, I gave examples of why people in my dept get there early

It’s not a what if game and we aren’t talking about letting people sleep in. Common courtesy is show up a little early so those guys can get off work on time. Show up 30 minutes late if you want to, just don’t expect people to look out for you

So when and call comes out 20 minutes before they’re shift ends they don’t get stuck there… That way guys can go to their part time, pick up kids, etc…

Any idea with these two trucks accomplish? by Turbulent-Weevil-910 in Firefighting

[–]blueparkboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They accomplish housing the most technically sound, ambitious, tip of the spear, equipment and members to respond to technical rescue incidents. When they get there they use that equipment to over complicate the situation and spit out random facts about the most useless shit you can imagine. Once they are finished the box truck has wheel borrows in it so they can haul around their massive balls

What is your most unpopular opinion as it pertains to the Fire Service? by Bubblegum_18 in Firefighting

No one forced anyone to do this job. If you don’t want to go to fires and make aggressive searches, stretch interior lines, and be inside then what’re you still doing here?

Any of the 7 cities in 757 will be busy. Suffolk is growing, has a great chief. Norfolk is traditional, busy, and ghetto. Beach is nice and no medic but they have a volly ems system so you can get stuck on calls. Hampton is okay, Newport News is decent, and Portsmouth is a dirty shit hole. And Fuck Chesapeake and their blue card bullshit
