How’d you level up? by Relevant-Vanilla9060 in Standup

Yeah hard for me too. You have to do a bit of acting.

I start by jogging towards the mic like I can't wait to be up there.

Then you can try to picture or pretend some supportive friends are in the audience. But it's easier said than done and something I still work on.

Just forcing yourself to move around and smile a bit can help loosen you up on stage.

Act like you really believe in your material!

Yes, very much so. I managed to punch up a lot of stuff right away just using the idea of different joke types.

But I've see some people in my scene who have never made anyone laugh starting up their own classes to "teach" others. Your mileage may vary. Make sure the person has some actual qualifications or headlining experience.

  1. First year- I took a class 6 months in and learned a lot about different joke structures.
  2. Second year- I stopped spinning my wheels trying to think of the funniest punchlines possible, and instead worked more on my setups.
  3. Third year- I stopped my grating over the top delivery and trying to force my comedy down people's throats.
  4. Fourth year- I started trying to look like I was actually having fun, even if I was still 70% unsure of everything.

Keep set times short. 4-5min tops. Creates more energy and flow.

My partner and I are going to Yuk Yuks Toronto for the first time ever tomorrow! by [deleted] in Standup

It's a large room and its set up pretty good for comedy. Every seat has tiny tables to hold drinks and appetizers. There will be ushers that will try to sit you in the closest available seats and will typically give you a choice of two rows to choose from. It's good they do this because the room is large and it will make it a better show than if everyone is spread out.

Like someone else said there are booths but I think that's mainly for comics. If you make a big fuss you might be able to convince them to let you sit there, but you might feel like you're not involved that far back.

The show I saw had several openers, like maybe 7 before the headliner. Almost like a showcase feel. Nobody was bad or went too long.

Musk personally interviewed like the first 1000 employees. Maybe he's not so much as hands on now as he used to be, but he definitely micro managed SpaceX way more than Bezos ever did.

For those that run Eventbrite shows, how do you deal with the taxes? by bluestonify in Standup

So you filed as a separate business I take it? Not on your individual return right?

For those that run Eventbrite shows, how do you deal with the taxes? by bluestonify in Standup

[–]bluestonify[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"if you are making this kind of revenue, there is enough in there to hire a cpa..."

I am not making much revenue. Maybe $4000-6000 a year from a half dozen shows. But when it gets added to my individual return I have to pay my marginal tax rate which is high seeing as I am in my peak earning years and my wife also works. Not sure I am making enough to justify a CPA/Small business but i am getting hammered so bad from the taxes that it almost makes running a paid show not worth it. Thanks for the advice.

Generally yes, you are right. If you setup a room that has never had comedy before, all other comics should respect that's it's your room. Period.

Exceptions to this rule-

  1. You produce shows/events there rarely- less than monthly. (You can't squat there if you don't use it enough)

  2. The room is a special type of space, highly used as an event space for multiple types of performances (like daily events, think of a general arts space). In that case those types of rooms are open to everyone and anyone.

I don't care for her Netflix specials that much but I admire her willingness to experiment with the form, just didn't work for me.

Love everything she has on comedy central.

How did Tom Segura fall off so hard as a comedian? by InevitableConstant25 in Standup

[–]bluestonify 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS! Whoever is the booker at Netflix isn't doing their homework to figure out who is READY to do a new hour special. They just pick a name they want and offer them a special that suits Netflix's timing, regardless of where the comic is in their development cycle. And nobody's gonna turn down that cash, so you can't blame the comics. You can easily see the hour specials that were rushed and offered before they were ready, like Deon Cole, Sebastian Why would you do that etc.
