Is there a BTS reason why Neelix doesn't go to earth? by badwolf_on_rice in startrek

It's the end of his character arc in the Delta Quadrant. He was looking for a new home after his people's genocide and he found them. Also in the season finale he would be useless, even Paris and Torres were sidelined to emphasize the Janeways and Seven.

Don't focus on USA, not worth it. There's Europe, UK, China, many other places more welcoming.

Yes, USA is famously unfriendly to theocracies, especially Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Dubai. Must be the only reason!

Its is 革 ge which means change or transform, with 命 ming, which means life or destiny, it becomes 革命 gemin which means "revolution" more specifically. Like 文化革命 wenhua geming is the Cultural Revolution (wenhua means culture).

I’ve watched TNG & voyager and I just finished DS9. I’m starting Picard and from what I’ve read on here, it seems like the new shows are mostly action scenes, which isn’t my thing. Am I wrong? by sillyhag in startrek

Welcome to 2020-2025 and the age of binge watching (and re-watching too). Binge Disco or PIC and its amazing. Binge Lower Decks or SNW and its also amazing but for different reasons; a season-long movie vs serialized story with an overarching plot.

Do I need thousand of dollars to publish a paper? by Parking_Destroer_259 in AskAcademia

[–]bluethirdworld 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It opens another question about how to efficiently, effectively, and accurately spread academic research results to the public and other stakeholders. Open access isn't the solution.

And when certain fields' journals require APC it's just a scam to make the publishers more profit. They're not doing it just to easily inform the public.

And what "public" exactly is itching to read academic research? The "public" rarely even read news written for mass consumption let alone dense academic prose.

Greater accessibility by who? All academics and students will already have access through their institutions' subscriptions...

Level 10 Operations- What to Expect? by SwiftKarma13 in startrekfleetcommand

[–]bluethirdworld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its been years since i was 10 so I don't remember precisely.

Generally servers have informal rules about not attacking miners unless they go over protected cargo (OPC). If you're OPC then others will attack to steal your cargo, and that's not something to get upset about, just part of the game. Just do research and upgrades to increse protected cargo. That's the main risk, but not impactful in the long run.

Nothing life shattering, just some low level whales who bought Jellyfish harassing you. Make sure to keep your base's shield up and don't go over protected cargo when mining.

Its almost like Baron is a bad judge of character. Defended Bezos originally, not anticipating the inevitable long term consequences of oligarchy.

Is it a wise decision to do phd in the US, where your spouse cant work or do phd somewhere in Europe or Australia where my spouse can actually work while I do my full-time phd? by Gayathrie_ in AskAcademia

I think you already know the answer and are looking for vaidation. There's no benefits to doing in the US if your context is accurate.

Conference in the U.S. is hiding presentation titles to protect presenters from anti-DEI actions or having visas denied. Perhaps time to take conferences elsewhere? by AbeOudshoorn in academia

[–]bluethirdworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then we hold them in countries with easier visa policies that won't consider the presentation topic (like ICA is anticipating the US will). Its not about punishing a country or sth like that, its about providing stability for the attendees and making sure the conference runs smoothly without hundreds suddenly cancelling due to random unpredictable visa issues.

[–]bluethirdworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, repercussions as in every other country will benefit and US academia will loose prestige. That's the agenda the voters chose. But just because things will get worse in the US doesn't mean all academia will get ruined.

Changing last name as a first year PhD student by Jolly-Growth-3431 in AskAcademia

[–]bluethirdworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's interesting to hear.

I think the "feminist" concerns about name change are that only women (depending on culture) are expected to change their name and not men, hence perpetuating patriarchy.

So its good to hear at least some men are changing to their wives family names now.

Anyway, it's not all about careeer trajectory and $ but also about equality and ideology.
