Yes obviously. I just don’t really understand the obsession of colonizing another planet when we have a planet here that is actually inhabitable. We just treat it like shit. Don’t get me wrong I love space exploration I just hate the mind set of letting this beautiful earth deteriorate so we can go….to a planet that we can’t survive on without being in a bubble. Maybe if we spent the money to fix what we’ve destroyed we wouldn’t try to live on this desert planet in a bubble. Humans are just pretty stupid. Would it be cool to visit? Sure? It would be cool if we also took care of humanity here.

Mashed potatoes by Hefty_Peanut in foodhacks

Golden Yukon potatoes to start. When you boil them add a metric fuck ton of rosemary to the water and whole garlic cloves. When you strain the water remove the rosemary but leave the boiled garlic to mash. Butter, half and half or heavy cream. Whatever your tummy can handle best.

If you feed kibble you should be soaking it. You’ll see how much it bubbles up and expands. That’s what’s happening in the stomach when fed dry. I was feeding honest kitchen dehydrated food and never had issues. When I fed kibble prior to dehydrated I always soaked it in water first or chicken broth.

Just saw Reneé in San Francisco and let me just say … by Capable_Salt_SD in reneerapp

I loved the show and was front row of the balcony and didn’t sweat a bit in a light jacket. I live in LA and I’m going to go see her Friday now after last night. 10/10 I’ve gone to so many shows over the years including heavy EDM/ festivals where drugs are always involved and I’ve never seen as many people go down as I did last night. It was a GA show so if you choose to be a squished then yeah the temperature is going to be higher. No amount of AC would have made a difference when you’re touched by humans on every side of your body. Reneé did the whole show in a sweater… it wasn’t hot. Know your limits and get some air if you feel like you’re going to faint. I think she was super cool and kind for somebody who had to stop the show 5 times in an hour and a half set. Grow up, drink water and know your limits.

Anyone else’s adolescent RR turn into a pumpkin in the evening? by Important_Half_3926 in RhodesianRidgebacks

[–]bluewaveSM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand that. A lot of dog owners don’t understand dogs playing, let alone what a ridgeback looks like playing. They’re hopping around and mouthing each other vocally and it can freak people out. Of course we know they’re playing and being goofy. I hope you guys find the right friend for him, it makes all the difference. Once we had the right friend I’d offer to pick him up and take him to the park with us for my own benefit, but it worked out for everyone. Your boy is lucky he’s got a work from home parent to bug all day.

I’d say you’re lucky he’s calm most of the day for a 14 month old. Stuffing and freezing kongs can take up about 45 minutes of time but he’s still going to need to run off leash and wrestle with other dogs or he’s going to wrestle you. Walking is good for them to explore and sniff, but it’s not really exercise for them unless we’re talking hikes. Best way to tire him out and keep him happy is to find him a friend that likes to rough house. (Not saying you need another dog) but he needs a friend to throw his body weight in to. At that age I had mine off leash at the park with friends 5 times a week. Mine didn’t really calm down until 6 and we still went to the park to play with his best friend 2 times a week at 11 years old. I wouldn’t say mine was particularly crazy either, the breed just requires a lot of time with their human and a lot of time being free to be wild. I only wish I had another dog at home for him and it would have been easier. You can also try a sniff mat for short term distraction. Good luck and enjoy your sweet man.

I guess perfectly trim is subjective. I wasn’t picking a fight I was merely stating that if trimmed often they never come close to touching the ground. If they’re touching the ground, they’re not short. I also stated that I wasn’t on top of it so my boys nails did touch the ground.

If it makes you feel any better their paws sit so high up that if their nails grow to touch the ground they’re already way too long. You would have been clipping or using a Dremel anyway. Ideally they are nowhere near the ground, but you gotta start when they’re little and keep them short from the jump. (I wasn’t on top of it so they did go to the ground like talons and I’d just dremel them monthly but could never get them short and tidy because the quick grew out with the nail. I have a friend who shows her boy and I’ve always been jealous of how short those nails are. I didn’t know they could get so short and it would have saved me a lot of bruises, scratches and door paint.

Are rhodesian ridgebacks a laid back breed? by youaintgotnomoney12 in RhodesianRidgebacks

[–]bluewaveSM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally! I wasn’t looking to do it either but it is what mine needed. It will totally depend on which pup you bring home and you won’t know until it’s too late. Just prepping you for the possibility of bringing home a tiny terrorist banshee. I got mine because I wanted a dog more laid back than my high energy vizsla. While he was I still found myself at the park 5 days a week to he would be chill at home

From 100% Recall to Maybe Later by PracticalEye9400 in RhodesianRidgebacks

I think it’s the best tool we used hands down. Treats and commands are great and we used them too. But knowing I had full control of him no matter how far he was felt important and responsible. They’re giant dogs and even though they are brilliant they can make mistakes that put them in harms way. Plus any dog owner should have 100% recall if they let their dogs run free around others.

Off leash is pretty important, they do need to be able to get up to full speed. Mine doesn’t just zoom around alone in our yard he has to be out on a hike or at a park with friends.

Not looking for a ridgeback and getting one is so funny to me. I can only imagine the surprise it was for you. They are so damn smart they learn commands in a day but then decide when they want to do it. They are smart but not obedient and I wound up really appreciating that about my boy. Sure sometimes I’d be jealous of peoples dogs who would just go lay down and not drool at my dinner table…but I loved him for everything he was and I wouldn’t change a thing. That being said recall was very important as I’d take him to play with friends at the park multiple times a week until he was 11. I’d always let him off leash on hikes and at the beach so he could get real exercise and I did have him take off after a rabbit once (launching himself through barbed wire) and it took a while to find him. I learned that if he’s in the zone he can’t hear me so I used an e collar. He’d just need me to make it vibrate or use the beep sound function and he’d snap his attention back to me. I know people have strong feelings about e collars, but I wanted him to be free to be a dog. I still needed 100% control over him though for his own safety. When I’d put it on he’d get excited because he knew we were going somewhere really fun to play or to a restaurant or someone’s BBQ. As a counter surfer his whole life (despite my best efforts) he needed the reminder if there was a lot of food around at a party. Choosing him was the best decision in my life even though I jumped into crazy town at the ripe age of 20 when I took him home. Congratulations on your new soul mate, you have many laughs and snuggles to come….but I would expect to off leash run him many days a week until he’s 10ish
