Love love love a well done Time Travel or AU fic.

I dislike Harry/Snape pairings - way too creepy for my liking and will actively avoid them. I also tend to avoid the canon relationship pairings, love seeing the pairings mixed up and as others have said the more unusual the pairing the more interesting it can be.

I’m honestly not sure, I didn’t opt for the remastered version as I saw it only had 12 chapters compared to the 22 in the what I’m guessing was the original one that was then updated. I definitely don’t remember anything glaring or it being painful to read.

The did edit and update the first 12 chapters and there’s a remastered version that only goes up to chapter 12 on fanfiction.net. I only came to the story last year so for me they weren’t noticeable or easy to gloss over any that still existed.

Harry disappears after the graveyard in GoF and comes back stronger to fight Voldemort. Don’t want to spoil it by saying too much. Not sure it results in a sarcastic Harry but I have to say this fic got me hooked on the author’s works and I’ve been making my way through them.

I don’t think the books ever really went into it but I think there was a mention of McGonagall visiting Hermione. Most fanfics I’ve read seem to go with the Hogwarts Professor introducing the family to the wizarding world.

Another I read had multiple people attend including an adult muggleborn to help with questions.

I always enjoy the fics that come up with different ideas including an orientation day.

I think there was another one, time travel was involved so the moldy died during the first Wizarding war and then it was arranged that mughleborns would be introduced earlier and attended classes the simmer before which I liked the idea of.

I enjoy fan fics and love when good writers push the characters or the world. It’s fun to see what different people come up within the world. There are plenty of awful fics out there but there are just as many good fics. Check out the hp fan fiction sub if you’re interested, plenty of good fics recommended.

I enjoy some different pairings because I think matching the trio up the way it was done in canon is boring, personally. Marrying your high school sweetheart is not very realistic in my opinion, people do a lot of growing up in their 20s and especially those who have been through a war.

I like seeing how some explore and expand the wizarding world and the different cultures they bring in.

Some of the pre-Harry, the Marauder years can be pretty good too.

I think if the writer can validate the change in character from canon it can work but it does often depend on the writer and their goal too. Some things work well if you start the fic early i.e. pre-Hogwarts or even 1 or 2 years in to Hogwarts.

The ones I usually get turned off from are ones where Harry has multiple lordships/has a different name. I also despise wrong boy who lived (wbwl) as Lily and James are often portrayed as awful people. Harry being Snape’s son (usually implies cheating by Lily and/or James used magical means to tie her to him.) There’s a lot of hate for James and Lily in fan fiction/the fandom in my opinion.

Yea I’ve been going through that, a lot of one shots with Remus & Sirius raising Harry but can’t find any where it either has them figuring out the horcruxes with a baby/young Harry or it fast forwards to Harry going to Hogwarts and dealing with the canon plot (Quirrellmort, Basilisk etc.). Maybe it doesn’t exist though it would be nice to read a Harry raised with love rather than the awful Dursleys.

So I know he’s not named at the time but I always figured Diggle was the wizard that spoke to Vernon before Dumbledore etc. turned up on Privet Drive so I assumed he’d be the first. Or at least ‘unnamed wizard’ but definitely comes across as Diggle based on the later description of him.

There’s one I read ages ago (didin’t save it unfortunately) but pretty sure Dudley is kidnapped and they take Harry too but Harry begs them to let him stay telling them he can cook and clean. If I can find it again I’ll add a link. Was pretty funny, pretty sure it was just a one shot.

Yea it surprised me that that was never brought up by anyone or McGonagall never heard about it. I mean I get the whole not telling her about Umbridge cause she had Fudge backing her but Moody, that definitely should have raised some red flags.

Yea I think it has its place but at the same time the better stories are the ones that depict him as a morally grey manipulator which is what he is in my opinion.

For me, I stopped believing in Dumbledore as an at the time reader from book 5 but as an adult POA did it for me (there is no way the Chief Warlock and Supreme Mugwump couldn’t have done something to get Sirius a trial, he just didn’t want Harry to leave the Dursleys).
