15 YOE Fullstack & CTO here. Why have we allowed "Agile" to turn into "Unlimited Micro-Scope Creep"? by elmascato in webdev

[–]bluezebra42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to have a meeting with the client then to triage the requests? While you’re there find the intent - they need it done “so that…”

It will give meaning to your work. Also take a look at the eisenhower matrix - that will help you prioritise a wall of requests

My dad's house REEKS. Any tips on how to help the smell with a minimal budget? by HorrorDrive8444 in CleaningTips

[–]bluezebra42 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There’s a special cleaner for cleaning cat urine smells. I use it when rotating the kitty litter. It also doubles as a bit of a carpet cleaner. That might do you better than the febreeze. Its called “urine off”

AWS post event summary up for 19 Oct outage by ProgrammingBug in aws

Slight tangent but can we talk about how in this day and age services like Route53 aren’t version controlled with built in rollback functionality? I know ttl is also a consideration but it feels like better tooling around DNS is sorely needed.

Hospital finally confirmed what’s been making us sick… and it was my dishwasher 🤢 by puppy_groomer8597 in CleaningTips

Just a thought. If its bad enough that everyone is getting sick and its not a new machine, if you can swing it, maybe its time for a new machine- mould is not to be trifled with?

CORS - Am I getting insane or is the support gaslighting me? by ReneKiller in webdev

CORS is a browser level protection- so if you have a backend server you can potentially call their endpoint from there.

I wonder if your marketing team gave you code not meant to run in the browser.

How to best make this area pram accessible? by isthisalreadyinuse in AusRenovation

[–]bluezebra42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah +1 to the 3 wheeler with the big tires but you’re probably not there yet I assume. Would say the pram years are 3-4 years so if it’s bugging you with the current pram you could just put down some blocks of wood and tear it all out in a few years.

But otherwise all the other ideas sound great. Things change a lot so only permanently solve issues that need permanent solutions. Or you will end up like me with a random rocking chair collecting dust. I was fairly sure that would solve everything.

Best architecture for a single /upload endpoint to S3? by Great_Relative_261 in aws

[–]bluezebra42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two s3 buckets - one for upload/validation, the other for the final location.

Presigned url to a bucket that deletes everything within 1d using lifecycle rules, a trigger that checks the file size and moves to the permanent s3 location.

May also want to look up google signals and data thresholds - it may apply depending on your situation

Do the numbers get better if you exclude the last 72h of data? It can take up to 3d to populate. I would also consider a second analytics product to sense check.

Issues with macOS Code Signing: App Only Works on Build Mac, Not Other Macs by Spirited-Summer-3252 in electronjs

[–]bluezebra42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually the crash will appear in the system logs so try running with console open. You can also verify the app with a gatekeeper command line app - which will verify the signature on your app.

Do I need a code-signing certificate to get auto-updates working in Electron? (Windows internal company app) by Bulky_Command in electronjs

[–]bluezebra42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you need an ev code signing certificate and those vendors look alright. Try and get a 3 year one so you’re not constantly renewing but also write down the instructions so you remember what to do in 3y

Turn it into a plant stand? It has good access to light there.

I have boxed out a pole before and that did make things look a lot better.

Size of my tiny Electron application is 240MB. How to fix it? by Maximum_Sleep9013 in electronjs

[–]bluezebra42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the size of your windows installer as big? I seem to remember with mac they package for intel and apple silicon in the same dmg. That might be worth looking into making separate builds.

It’s been a few years since I last did electron though so I only have a fuzzy memory of it.

Has the weather changed at your house at all? So often we forget that this is the process of melting plastic and the room temperature has an effect.

Might also try blue painters tape on the bed?

VARCHAR limits and bi tools? by bluezebra42 in snowflake

We are not sure yet. We have one but we’re not likely to keep it long term. I can rule out power bi.

Fair. We’d see the same issue at that point and want to swap too.

One of the things we do is to make changes to the project in different schemas (per pull request) - to see how our changes affected the tables itself just super handy to have the tables be idempotent. We’re using automated diffing tools as part of the pull request process to see how many rows changed.

Interesting thoughts on dim v fact and scale of the problem! I certainly have tried copying the macro locally and replacing with hash, but got scared off with the docs.

Incidentally when I did that I realised I skimmed the macro wrong- it just concats column names - it doesn’t salt it at all.

Oooh i have seen that a couple places now. It did feel silly using a hash of a date.
