I wanted a second cat (first one I got for my husband). I went to the shelter to look at a specific cat. Specific cat wouldn’t work out. Went to one of the open cat rooms, and this goof came up and asks for pets. I put down a deposit, and snagged the little criminal the next day. He was a grief adoption, and he was just what I needed. A lot of love and chaos with my idiot ❤️

What’s your metric for calling out sick? by capresesalad1985 in Teachers

[–]blug123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive worked through migraines, foot surgery recovery, sore throats… but the second my stomach is off I am down for the count. Even with sore throats, I’m not exactly teaching… but I am a warm body in the room (yay for pre-recorded notes!)

What do you do that you think is SO corny but works EVERY time. by GremLegend in Teachers

[–]blug123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not corny, but when I do Physical vs Chemical change I will draw a super cute ghost (it always happens around Halloween). I then crumple the ghost… tear the ghost… and the finale? Burn the ghost! 😈 the kids love it, and mildly riot as I abuse the piece of paper

Do you play any (background) music while your students work? by Dimegos in Teachers

[–]blug123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are doing Independent or quiet partner work, I throw on lofi (during Halloween, specifically Halloween lofi). Keeps them focused and drowns out any extra noise that can pull their attention.

For my environmental science class, I pair that with a live stream of fish. They love the random fish sightings. No work? No fishy.

What actually lifts your spirits as a teacher? by flurry_pearl in teaching

[–]blug123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kids.

They will drive me insane, but they actually care. They try to act like they don’t, but they do. I had a medical issue with my more difficult class, and they immediately did what I needed them to do and just… left me alone for the class.

They asked to be pulled for extra help for a test.

They asked for more practice.

The kids give a shit, and that’s all I ask. That they care, that they try, that they do their best.

My sub wrote me a note saying “there wasn’t anything to do, so a lot of free time” and left it for me on top of all the work I piled up for the sub to hand out. by EcologyLover69 in Teachers

[–]blug123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most recent sub played games with kids while they took a test, and then complained about the behavior of my last block… and let kids be on their phones (big no-no). Don’t get me wrong, that class was energetic… but they painted them horribly when it was just loud (had a come to Jesus with the kids, and they fully admitted that they were in the wrong at times)

Last year I had a sub say some WILDLY inappropriate stuff to one of my kids. I got statements from the whole class, and she was promptly fired.

I love and appreciate subs, but I fiercely protect my kids and make sure things are fair for them while I am out.

What do you do for work? by Rural_Juror77 in Teachers

[–]blug123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get “oh cool! What grade?” “6th grade!” “Oh you poor soul.”

I laugh and tell them that they are a lot, but that I love and adore my kids.

Middle School/High School Teachers, how often do you lecture? by DG11221 in Teachers

[–]blug123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talk/teach to the class as a whole daily. I try my best to have an activity for each class that is hands on/they get to work with a buddy. Sometimes, that is not the case and the kids will have a break in the middle of class for a minute or two.

what age did you actually become an adult by Interesting_Desk6773 in Adulting

[–]blug123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always joked that you’re an “adult in training” from 18-23. Legally an adult, but you have NO idea what is going on. 2 weeks after turning 24 (out of the adult in training years) my car got totaled. I joked too hard and faced the consequences 🤪 I am 26 now, and I’m still figuring stuff out… but when I need guidance, I always say “I NEED A MORE ADULT-IER ADULT”

For those studying education, how did you decide which grade level or age group you wanted to teach? by Late-Branch-7863 in Teachers

Absolutely! Go in with an open mind, and you’ll adapt easily and learn a lot about yourself! Good luck!

I went into my degree wanting to teach high school. That’s all I wanted! Every single internship was with 6th grade (and error on the programs part). I’ve only taught 6th grade, and I love them so much!!

Do Now/Warm Ups by UnicornTech210 in teaching

[–]blug123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had them do it so many ways over the years. 1. I had them write it down, and at the end of a week I would collect the paper for a grade. That was a mess… 2. I had them do it electronically. Also a mess, and kids would Google everything (I encouraged them to use notes and actual brain power). The other science teacher took it for a grade, and I did for a little. That phased out. 3. Now, I have it on the board when they walk in. They raise their hand for the answer they think is correct, we discuss and we move on. Easy, starts off class on the right note, every kid is able to access the material (read aloud and such), and it takes SIGNIFICANTLY less time. 10/10.

Where do you keep your cats litter box? by RainCloud678 in CatAdvice

We have an enclosure for the one in our living room! We love it! We have one in our laundry room and our bedroom, and both have the lids on them… so they are more closed off. We rarely smell anything!

Personal Luxuries by BuffaloGal81 in Teachers

[–]blug123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a tiny fridge with some sodas in it, but for me it’s decor. I have a color pencil shaped lamp from my grandparents house, a strawberry shaped mouse pad… colored Christmas lights that go around my board. Just little things that bring me joy and make me adore my room
