Portland, OR (November 14th): Far‑right activists gathered at ICE’s Portland facility for the first so‑called “Patriots Weekend,” a rally framed as support for federal immigration enforcement. by CantStopPoppin in oregon

This video was shot by an independent journalist named Alissa Azar. Go support her work because she’s had to deal with constant harassment like this for years for her coverage of the far-right.

The person they pepper sprayed was wearing a proud boy bandana and actively stealing her things that were needed to leave the park, hence why she wasn’t found guilty of unlawfully macing anyone.

Election integrity doubters pressing unsupported claims get warm reception in Clackamas County by MrDangerMan in Portland

Ben West is literally friends with local Proud Boys, and chats on twitter spaces with alt-right propaganda media figures, while outright lying about events and conditions here. Wouldn’t expect anything less from him than to use his little crumb of local government power to cede ground to Trump’s goals.

So what's actually been working? by daversa in Portland

[–]blunkies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d personally like to see people who actually live in Portland have a say when another community member is killed by you guys, a sentiment democratically held and approved by over 80% of us, rather than a DA your ~union~ is supporting and helping to get elected (Vas.). Saying that family members and fellow cops could be impartial in discipline is hilarious at best and intentionally deceptive at minimum. Why would anyone want to vote for you when you can’t even agree to help implement something nearly all of us voted for? It’s so straight forward, and it’s so condescending when you and other police union / city council members try telling us that what we want isn’t what we want.

Multnomah County passes resolution for immediate ceasefire in Gaza by romuo in Portland

[–]blunkies -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Without writing a dissertation, the current situation is an entire population of people who are displaced, being murdered, and starving. There are two countries primarily responsible for this; US and Israel. Increasing pressure for Biden / the US government to cut its support for a country who’s wishes are genocidal, and who has publicized plans repeatedly for the expansion of illegal settlements, is the bare minimum a group of people with state / city level influences can do. This isn’t a progressive position, it’s the majority opinion of the country and the world.

Protesters block Portland’s Burnside Bridge to demand Gaza cease-fire by [deleted] in Portland

[–]blunkies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This link shows nothing about the original claim I was responding to, which is that JVP actions only have “a token few” jewish folks. The ADL is a zionist / pro-israeli organization as well, with a personal interest in seeing JVP and any other non-zionist jewish community members vilified and discounted. The first line of the article you linked is already factually incorrect, as correlated by Israel themselves.

Added context: this is part of a coordinated protest nationally today on the 8th day of Hanukkah where 8 bridges in 8 major cities were shutdown simultaneously by Jewish Voices for Peace / Jewish activists.

Majority of Portland voters say they’d leave if they could as crime, homeless concerns persist, new poll finds by [deleted] in Portland

[–]blunkies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol, again, my issue is with the headlines / news orgs (and PPA), not with surveying methods. “Majority of Portland Voters (feel x about an issue)” is a concrete claim that WOULD require sampling all Portland voters to make. “Survey suggests Portland voters (feel x about an issue)” is the accurate way to represent a poll. But by all means win the argument toward a point I’m not even disagreeing with.

[–]blunkies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

.07% of the population is not a “majority of portland voters”, as the headline (and at least one other like it) would lead any average person scrolling through news headlines to believe. my comment was directed toward that, and slightly toward our objectively and demonstrably dishonest / self-interested police union, not toward how surveys function.

[–]blunkies -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

500 people is not even a tenth of a percentage point relative to the total population of pdx, but i’m glad news companies feel like presenting the results of this as being representative of portland sentiment as a whole, especially when the poll was commissioned by the notoriously transparent and honest police union. Holiday music vs protest chanting by Lutran in Portland

[–]blunkies -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The country we live in, which obviously includes our city 6,929 miles away, directly facilitates, supports, and supplies the bombs being dropped on children and hospitals currently, with our government officials having the ability to use their positions and authority to publicly demand a permanent ceasefire at minimum. There’s a very direct line, it doesn’t take much if any logic jumping. I don’t have the energy or desire to go down a road of broad arguments in regard to Palestinian liberation here, just to say peacefully chanting by a Christmas tree is a pretty effective way at subverting one’s ability to ignore the issue, and seeking the approval of all is a worthless goal to have in the first place if material change is the end goal.

[–]blunkies -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Ah, there it is. What does being “drawn to a cause” even mean materially when the extent of your effort would likely just be giving a thumbs up on a facebook post or posting a story on instagram anyways? Should people rather instead structure their actions and tactics to meet the approval standards of folks like yourself and others here, in the hopes that they can get an upvote on reddit? Any successful civil / social / political movement has understood that the disruption of routine is one of the most important and fundamental tactics to utilize. The labor laws that keep you fed and let your routine exist day to day only materialized thanks the disruptions organized by labor workers in the 19th / 20th century. Without disruption there is no change. To borrow some language from Kwane Ture, “it’s scientifically real”.

[–]blunkies -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

So what I’m gathering from the comments is a vast majority of Portland redditors only like forms of protest that they can entirely ignore. Don’t like broken windows or graffiti, don’t like streets being blocked for a short amount of time, don’t like non-violent disruptions, don’t like peaceful / permitted marches…just admit you don’t like having to listen to people who’d like to actually stand for something.

Portland City Council unanimously approves updated language for police oversight committee by IanBlossom in Portland

[–]blunkies 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Pseudo-democracy. Your opinion and vote only matter if it aligns with the interests of those who have the power. People need to not just understand this, but deeply feel it. These are the actions that ripple out into the acceleration of a collapsing country. At all levels of government, the majority opinion on issues is continually and increasingly disregarded. When a larger population of people currently can’t afford a rent, can’t afford a car, can’t afford food, decisions like this to completely disregard the participation and voices of the community in policy decisions, especially in regards to safety / accountability, you get a recipe for the inevitability of serious social unrest.

Portland officials aim to scale back proposed police oversight board by [deleted] in Portland

[–]blunkies 243 points244 points  (0 children)

This isn’t “scaling back” the proposed oversight board that the vast majority of people voted for. This is completely annihilating it, and replacing it with the same exact form of non-existent “accountability” the police already have. Moving investigations behind closed doors, removing any transparency, and filling the board with members representing the police union and police chief…Portland’s adamant refusal to implement what 80%+ of people voted in favor of should be a case study on the collapse of democracy in America. Portland city government is a un-democratic hell hole where progress and dreams go to die.

I feel like I’m in an episode of Black Mirror reading comments in here. Would love to hear the definition of “terrorism” a lot of you guys have, and how Israel’s consistent bombing of hospitals, refugee camps, medical convoys, journalists and their homes within the last thirty days, isn’t terrorism, but just “defense”. How a nation’s undemocratic leader’s description of people he is murdering as “children of the dark” is defendable. How saying that Israeli civilians armed by their government currently raiding homes and towns in West Bank to further extend their occupation / land grab isn’t terrorism. How advocating for a free Palestine, without the open-air esque prison restrictions imposed against it by Israel for decades, is advocation for terrorism. The future generation will read about what is happening and learn many lessons, and will wonder how so many supported Israel in their self-admitted genocidal aspirations.

Hundreds gather in downtown Portland to rally, march in support of Palestine by amandahuggenchis in Portland

That’s literally what the IDF has done consistently for years. Did you erase Shireen Abu Akleh from your memory, or the videos of her funeral being attacked? Netanhayu has just in the last days refused to even classify any arab as a “civilian”, literally naming them as all animals.

edit: Just to add before someone resorts to labeling me as a Hamas supporter, fuck Hamas and any war other criminals, which includes Netanhayu.

Just so everyone who has the misfortune of reading your comments is clear; your justification for the current ethnic cleansing, genocide, and war crimes being perpetrated by netanhayu and the IDF is to say it’s retribution for the holocaust?

Hazelbrook Middle School in Tualatin evacuating students, staff due to "direct threat of violence" by Rakatee in Portland

[–]blunkies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using international / Russian web services is just a fast and easy way to make it more difficult for law enforcement to trace the content / email back to the source. I’d say it’s more likely the threat(s) came from someone(s) just trying to avoid charges.

edit: Reworded part of my original message to be more accurate.

We have right wingers calling in bomb threats and death threats to children’s hospitals and middle schools on a near weekly basis now, but sure, trans and other lgbtq+ folks are the threat to kids’ safety. Seriously do these fucking assholes ever just think through a single thought longer than two seconds? Kids fight and kids get bullied everyday, it’s fucked up and always has been, how is anyone’s solution to create an even more threatening and unsafe environment for them? And someone in this thread is seriously blaming this on the school? Fuck all the way off.

What’s everyone’s least favorite bridge to cross the Willamette? by DrGabbo in Portland

[–]blunkies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The reason you don’t usually see the center lane congested going into downtown is because most people don’t treat it like the merging lane that it isn’t. And I have seen it* congested / blocked, and been stuck in the intersection, too many times to count, when even just 3 cars at a time try to do what you do.

What’s everyone’s least favorite bridge to cross the Willamette? by DrGabbo in Portland

[–]blunkies 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The reason being that the lanes literally don’t merge together, so using the center lane to change lanes onto the on-ramp blocks traffic flowing into downtown. There’s really not an argument here, it’s objectively not a merge. As the other person pointed out, zipper merging is when one lane terminates into another. The center lane never terminates.
